I always try to give most vidya a chance and was thrilled with the idea of mario and Luigi superstar saga and idk still feels like the gameplay is more similar to viewing a movie with options in the movie and less like a game

Not particularly. It's basically if Zelda and Fez had a baby which if that's your thing, I guess you'll probably like it. But overall it just seemed way too similar to those games that it ended up getting boring for me. I think I stopped playing it after 4-5 hours.
tunic is fricking garbage from top to bottom, DO NOT play it, it has satisfying hitboxes and cute graphics as the candy to lure you in, but ruins your experience with obtuse level design, poorly hidden key items, shitty combat and the worst warp system i've ever seen.

It's fine, the combat is absolute shit but the dungeons and exploration are pretty good. The booklet and language gimmicks are cool as well. If they didn't try to make the game into a soulslike with the rolling, aqnd just sticked to the zelda stuff, it would be a 9/10/ Now its a 7.5/10.

This is what disappointed me because the Messenger had great music and so I was expecting a music score the same level or better with SoS, but the music was less memorable then the Messenger. Even the remix tunes from the Messenger weren't as good as the originals.
Characters definitely could've used more skills, characters get 3 skills, 4 if you count their ultimate. Compared to Chrono Trigger, Crono and friends had 8 skills/techs. Moonerang is fun, but it stops being fun after you use it 30 times in 30 battles...
Really don't know why people say the music is shit or "mid", not every track is a winner but I liked the maintheme in all it's variations, some places like the factory or volcano have bangers, many tracks having alot of variations is also a plus for me, especially the accoustic versions played by the pirates.
I will say though, and maybe that's why so many people aren't impressed, the main battle music is indeed mid as frick and I can only recall because I heard it a million times.

It's good but it's pretty flawed. It's too easy, the characters don't have enough skill depth, and the story/characters is completely wack.
Chained Echoes is the better game, albeit pretty flawed as well. Both are dragged down by le ebin homages to 16-bit RPGs.

Chained Echoes is dragged down by the awful mecha combat imo. Shame such a potentially cool system is held back by it being implemented as a tacked-on addition that seems barely thought-out. Some mecha fights are almost impossible with the hardest difficulty settings, it's not satisfying at all when you beat them.

if you push through a little longer more stuff opens up. the game is very good at making sure new elements get added to add more variety and keep you interested but the first section of the game until you get the first new character on your team definitely takes some time.

I think the writters cut a chunk of the story somewhere about this, since she still insist to be registered with her fake name for the travel. serai might have given them a half truth about herself. there also a really suspicious line about their wind mage during the sea of star travel registration, I'm convinced that they hacked a big story arc about the pirates somewhere, robaly when the story splits in 3 and the Serai part is literally just a boss fight

Most people generally have fair complaints. The two protagonists lack-of personality or goals, the writing in general is too amateurish just like The Messenger, and the combat gets pretty stale because of how little you get to work with
most of those complaints aren't really "0/10" territory though. The game has a solid base for a first try, I really hope they get to do another one. If the flaws stay I'll be more critical though.

>levelups are just stat boosts with a bonus stat so you feel like your choices matter (they don't)
>exploration is mostly just search for funko pop and then search for a way to get to it, boring and tedious

He single-handedly ruined the game for me and in my opinion is the sole reason why the story falls flat. He gets his dick sucked every single time he's got the spotlight (Which is every cutscene) and takes away any possibility of tension.
That isn't to say the story can survive without him. The writers don't know how to write discourse, exposition or tension to save their fricking lives. Hate how the protagonists don't have questions about their destiny, don't want to entertain even speaking to the people that helped train them and don't even think for themselves.
Garl just does everything. They're the muscle. This game is so fricking boring on this alone.
It's just tough because he's written in a way where you're supposed to love him as opposed to being written in a way where you organically start to like him. The whole game it's very much "well yeah you should love Garl, everybody loves Garl!" instead of being "here is WHY you should love Garl"
May absolute favourite is When he gets resurected during the true ending and not only gets a whole party for his sake, he get's the by far strongest Ulti in the game that can break literally any combination of locks the game could throw at you and he gets to punch the fleshmancer one more time before he fricks off like wtf! can you not force him so hard?! He would even be likable otherwise.
That was the most stupid fight in the whole wheels side quest, frick that shit took me like an hour and half to finally steamroll it with lucky draws.
Everything else was fun though.
Garl's whole deal seems like a relic from when they had silent protagonists, so he'd be the party face. They realized having two silent party members would be moronic, but forgot to adjust Garl's character to account for it.
Garl is supposed to be a twist on the heroes not being the real heroes. It was ok except in the end they had this prophecy shit making him suddenly solve the story all by himself it was super lame.

I enjoyed it. It started really fricking slow and the heavy dialogue dump was a slog, but it picks up towards the end. Music was pretty good. There were a few songs where I was thinking of David Wise and a few where I was thinking of Chrono Trigger (especially the one in Kiln Mountain). Apparently they had one of CT's composers do at least one song, so that makes sense. Lock mechanic was decent, as was the boost shit. The game itself could be faceroll easy if you exploit the two moves that delay enemy counters, but you could also make it much harder if you want with the relic things. I decided to get 100% and it was pretty good, except the Wheels minigame, which is awful. Garl was the best.
The """motive"""" for the other solstice warriors to do what they did was moronicly weak. And then the guy kinda fricks off and it's just the girl. Also, you never fight One-Four again, even though I thought it acted like they would be powered up. Not that I wanted to fight them yet again, but it was a weird implication that never happened.
The problem with some of these story beats is that it is too directly tied and a prequel to The Messenger.
They should just have had the Fleshmancer overlap as the multiversional supervillian and some references and not several characters and plot points that just frick off because another game needs them.

I only played about half of The Messenger. I did the easter egg shit and I recognized the shopkeeper from that game, but had no idea Brugraves or the cultist people were in the game or had any ties to it. There was also a quick image during the true end credits that showed a demon or some shit that I had no idea what the frick I was looking at. I don't know if that's sequel bait or another not to Messenger.
Brugraves becomes the demon general guy (who you see in the true end credits with the transformed sun chick) and the cultists+Dweller of Strife become the Demon King.

There were so many combos that I never even tried because I loved Soonerang too much. I don't even know if it did more damage, assuming I timed well. Really, not knowing the damage for anything was an issue. The few times I used Serai's shiv, it seemed completely fricking worthless and it was her most expensive ability. Same with Bst.
By the end her shiv does ~240 damage for me

- stellar environments & enemy designs (prettiest NES game since the NES)
- soulful animations & soulful acoustic music in pubs
- amazing boss battles
- awesome dungeons & puzzles
- fun mini game & fishing
the mediocre:
- character evolution of the main cast is non-existent
- story telling lacked drama & oomph (which is puzzling because there WERE actual good scenes in the game like 'the sea of stars')
- combat lacks tactical depth & variety with EVERY input tied to a QTE
the bad:
- unsatisfying and anticlimactic end boss fight & ending
- combat system becomes stale mid-game
- no item/spell to get out of dungeons (much backtracking for 100%), not being able to flee battles
- trash mob fights take way too long (enemies with shield/summon spells are the worst)
- no romance allowed in ANY capacity, everyone feels asexual & genderless
- malkomud who was clearly planned to join the party is not playable
- main cast lack any personality and are devoid of any emotion beyond "GARL IS THE BEST THING IN OUR LIFE"
- GARL SUCKS ASS
this game could've easily been a 9/10. that's what's so frustrating about it. it's still a solid game and worth playing for sure, but it could have been a timeless classic.

You definitely made that up. I wish it did have a run button because, like the guy said, it's awful having to fight trash mobs when backtracking for the thousandth time. The map also needs more shortcuts. Going through the Jungle zone every time I wanted to turn in conches was terrible. Yeah, it's remedied when you can fly, but that's the very end of the game.
You can't, if anything I dissagree on the trash mobs taking too long, there are exactly two enemies with shields any sane person would focus to death or do anything to interupt their spells, there are 3 enemies in the game that can summon others, you also just simply don't let them do, hence why most people say this game is too easy.

The make or break in this game is basically if you like Garl or not.
I personally loved the guy mainly because I 100% thought he'd be the whiny b***h friend who gets jealous of the super special MCs or turned traitor but he turned out to be the bros of bros. Subverted expectations really helped as I expected the worst from him from the beginning.
I feel like a lot of people who are into self inserting may not be into that (example most CRPS where you create your character) but as someone who can't stand those sorts of wrpgs I appreciated the change of pace.
They really should've just stuck to one main character though. The "combat system" was not worth having two dud MCs. Plus, you never really feel you're getting stronger/ a sense of progression due to level scaling. At that point, adds should just be removed.
Not going to lie. I picked the chick as my control character so I headcanon'ed she was into Garl which honestly made her bare dialogue and the story a lot more enjoyable than it had any right to be. I then imagined the Sun dude was a Gankerbro and everything was well.
Still, the pretty lame rpg underneath this makes this hard to reccomend to anyone interested in trying it out as anything but a passing interest.
they should've made the Solstice Warrior you didn't pick the party face and given them most of Garl's story importance, but kept Garl as the jovial chef who makes friends with eldritch abominations

i didn't realize until ng+ that beasts elbow drop or whatever his cheapest spell is, can be timed three times and does around as much damage as an ultimate
i wish they spent more time expanding the locks stuff and made it a lot more punishing to miss timings on blocks and attacks. i really think this combat system feels limiting only because the enemies dont do enough, not because the player (with a full party) is limited really. more locks and longer enemy turns would go a long way. maybe some extremely punishing attacks
serai's kick and her combo with reshan that delay the enemy should also cost a lot more or be removed entirely because serai is by far the most important and abusable character just because of her kick
also wheels is pretty great. play it like you're making a poker hand, just worrying about locking in the ones with the blue background for exp, and then lock doubles, making 3 and unlocking to reroll if you already have 3
i think wheels is as good as a minigame in a game like this can be, and it's way less rng than it seems. the priest is way OP and the assassin is too. archer is garbage, mage is garbage without priest, warrior is good, assassin and priest are wildly OP. engineer is garbage

there is not a fight in the game, at any point, where you have to use your brain to take out adds or stifle them or anything on a boss fight. you really can just blast down everything. you might also be able to win if you completely ignore locks and just eat the attacks because nothing is punishing. it is the main deficiency in the game

honestly, in light of all the vidya available, it's hard to say that sea of stars is a bad game. i think it's actually a good game. a relatively-good game
it's a decent enough game for when it released, but it utterly fails to live up to its inspirations. Like, it's fine, I don't hate it, but the main feeling it evokes is "boy Chrono Trigger/Golden Sun sure was fun," when it should be "boy Sea of Stars sure is fun"
