Use mechapwn if you have the right model of fat and run burnt ps1 discs easily. Still sucks you have to use the optical drive though. I don't think it will ever be possible because of how ps1 mode locks the hardware

Eh. Didn't want to bother with burning either since I don't think I have anything around that burns. It'd just be nice to everything consolidated on a drive and be done with it.

      >everything for loading backups on a PS2 is still stuck in 2006
Can't wait for the first real ODE in 2035, then ps2 owners will be caught up to 2016 at long last

ODE on PS1 only works on certain models. It's unneccessary for the PS2 since you can just load from your network or the HDD.

I think your only option is a ps1 with ODE then

Yeah; except I'd have to track down another one since I have a PSOne. So I'd have to wait for the xStation guy to release the one he's currently testing (from 2022).

        Should get a PC.
You'll be able to burn things, emulate PSX better than the PS2 can, have everything consolidated in one place, and even more.

It's not though. a PS2 ODE is completely unnecessary for actualy ps2 games

What's wrong with OPL? I don't want to use standalone utilities to get the same features like you had 20 years ago and use an ODE.
Also you don't have to use FMCB but it's the easiest way.

How hard is this to fix?

          Anonymous

Depends. It's a more generic error than the RRoD and can mean anything from bad caps to a dead GPU, so anything from some simple hand soldering to a full BGA rework.

All PS3s with PS2 BC out of the box (including the European hybrids) have the 90nm Cell/RSX combo and are ticking time bombs. Well, most of them have gone off at this point.

            Anonymous

There is a "Frankenstein mod" where you solder the GPU from newer PS3's onto a Phat

So you're saying even given a fix, it's still a time bomb? Frick Sony.

              Anonymous

No the Frankenstein mod isn't a time bomb. The time bomb is the original Phat GPU

Yes, illiterate kun. Let's try this again.
                >PS3 has a mod
                >mod keeps it from self-destructing because ????
                >profit

                Anonymous

It's not just a guess that the mod keeps it from self-destructing since we have nearly 15 years of evidence that PS3 Slims don't suffer the same issue.
The problem with PS3 Phats was the NVIDIA bumpgate scandal of 2006-2008, wherein solder bumps on their chips were fricked—this affected the PS3's own NVIDIA GPU, leading to the high failure rates of PS3 Phats.
Later PS3 models and indeed NVIDIA's entire manufacturing process have long since resolved the bumpgate issue.

So basically my dead phat is permadead unless I learn how to solder or pay a gay. I'll keep it in mind.

Early PS2 models use the CPU from PS1 as input/output processor for things like accessing the hard drive or network. It can't do that and run a PS1 game at the same time, it's too weak for that. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Interesting. I wasn't aware that's what it was doing.

      Anonymous

It's because it runs in PS1 mode, the I/O processor directly talks to the optical drive to run the PS1 game, the EE is doing nothing, there's no way for the EE to load games over TCP for the I/O processor to run.
