The problem with the Lanius skill check isn't Lanius, he's just looking for an excuse to retreat. He's talking to a guy who just demolished his army, of course he'd want to run away. Giving him an excuse to leave just lets him save face instead of being forced to die a warrior's death.
The problem is the player, and everyone with him.
You mow through countless legions to get to Lanius, why would you let him live so he can regroup and attack again later? The only logical choice is to murder him. Especially if you already killed Caesar, it only makes sense to take out the successor too.
Convincing him that his cause is hopeless and then taunting him into attacking is the best choice.

In my experience with things like card games in open world games is that they're shitty bare bones simulations of the real thing that just rely on random button mashing and 50-50 RNG or whatever.
