It doesn't really play like the classicvanias. You pick a stage from the menu and run it with other players and open chests along the way to get new items, with better gear making you stronger and getting more skills from various means. Levelling up the skills makes your character's base stats increase.
The grind comes from running stages repeatedly trying to get the drops you want, and different characters having different item pools that they can get from a stage.
theres a discord server for lobbies which a lot of people in and most people there admit they just cheated their mastery in.
Survival grinding is the fastest if you have a friend (equip astral ring which makes your spells cost hp - dump spells into boss, kill self to boss, respawn, repeat)
If you don't, like me - just put two mastery rings on and spam the frick out of stuff on hard mode. What character are you levelling?

If there are any failed connections in the room which you see as either empty character portraits or copies of other players, the match will fail to start. So that's probably why he's closing it.

I've been playing from australia. There's been a few bosses where the bosses go funky, but it just seems to cause them to sit still and let me beat on them for five minutes while the other players are frantically jumping around the room. I've never had anything that makes me WOOOOOOW if that's what you're worried about.

It's mostly problems with joining a match which seem related to port forwarding, which was also a problem in the console version. Once a match actually starts it's smooth sailing most of the time; I've only had three matches bug out after starting so far, which isn't actually many overall.
What the frick, why have I never heard of this one before? I had to double check I wasn't misremembering, but it turns out Harmony of Dissidence and Harmony of Despair are two different games. Does it have a singleplayer mode as well, or is it just co-op focused?
You can play singleplayer but its an arcade game and the maps are designed around having a rounded party to reach equipment and shortcuts. Lots of "one person stands on the switch while the other goes through the door" chests and such.

Astral Ring + Chaos Ring on Charlotte lets you be a walking healing station. You'll heal close to 50 which will make you take about 2-5 damage but heal everyone else for 50.
If you have two charlotte's do it then you can just heal each other and use your spells.

any character with subweapons that need to be levelled up + gear requirements like whip users really. Jonathan has a shit load of subweapons and the whip user fuma/retro gear is rare. You have to level the subweapons to increase your whip power too.
this is the actual real game emulated. Not a reimagining with new characters. AS far as i can tell it plays identically to the original on xbl/ps3 and thats coming from me who easily had 3k hours back then

It's Alucard, Shanoa, and Soma that just make the game completely trivial. Next is the Belmonts that can really whittle down the boss with subweps spam, I saw a Richter do 212 damage with his kick against Astarte. The rest are basically useless once they burn through all of their mana.

She is still in the range of making the bosses trivial, it's just Soma is even higher in that tier. The Belmonts are basically that perfect balance since their burst of subs at the start of boss fights helps, and their whips are still reliable. Then there's chuckefricks that have to hide in the corner until their MP comes back like Charlotte and Yoko.
And there's Maria.

Belmonts and the the other 3 can be pretty broken with endgame gear but at that point why continue playing, you already reached the end. It's just how close do you have to be to endgame gear to make the game piss easy, and the only people who don't fit that bill at all are the Spellcasters/Maria.

I've seen buttholes leave the room when I switch to soma or alucard even though they are quite underpowered. That's really disappointing.

The PC port was an original game based off CV HD, it used its own engine and had a few original characters/stages. It was jank as frick and no longer in development. No reason to play it either when you can simply emulate (or play) the original
you have to absorb it with the shield like any other spell
you'll get the usual sound for a succesful absorb ATTEMPT (the shink! noise) then if successful the usual popup
protip, if you're doing it - do chapter 8, deal 45 damage to the witch to make it heal then immediately hit it again after it heals and it'll usually double cast.

For some reason 2x isn't included in the zoom toggle by default. Go into the options and set 2x on there somewhere so you can click the right stick. I find that to be the sweet spot for visibility.

You can push share boxes in front of the iron maidens, this will prevent him from moving to certain one of them.
He summons a puppet in his hand, if it reaches an iron maiden you are teleported inside. Kill the puppet before this happens. Repeat until win.

This game emulates just fine on my ancient PC gtx960, some old i5 2,5ghz. I get minor slowdowns in menus, but gameplay is stable 60fps. Only sometimes the animated backgrounds are freaking the frick out and look like my gpu is dying, but fortunately that's not it.
Any way to disable those background or at least make them less glitchy that isn't buying a new pc?

What made Soma broken in this game? Next to Richter he was my favorite Castlevania MC, but I heard he was broken and was widely used to never got around to playing.
basically soma is as strong as he was in his own game while most characters are nuetered slightly to fit the game format. If you play him yourself you wont notice a significant power gap but he actually gets stronger the more souls he gets.
He has short range on his sword (the sword wave is much weaker). He can spam his sub weapons (the rolling ball and ninja stars) for big damage until he's out of MP. He's short so he can dodge some attacks easier. Since he only has 3 sub weapons, I guess he can level up easier.
Should I grind on my own for a bit before I join people in multiplayer? Haven't played the game and don't know whether a multiplayer lobby with high-level players is the best place to learn the ropes
If the chapter isn’t unlocked it limits the room from selecting it. It’s usually people who haven’t fixed their network settings or people who enter the room and bail causing skinwalker dupes

If there are any failed connections in the room which you see as either empty character portraits or copies of other players, the match will fail to start. So that's probably why he's closing it.

How messy does it get with latency?
I've been playing from australia. There's been a few bosses where the bosses go funky, but it just seems to cause them to sit still and let me beat on them for five minutes while the other players are frantically jumping around the room. I've never had anything that makes me WOOOOOOW if that's what you're worried about.

It basically amounts to enemies sometimes reacting to another player's movement in a way that it doesn't seem like they would on your screen because the positioning is off, enemies dying when they didn't get hit on your screen, and bosses sometimes spawning in slightly off positions. I think almost everything to do with game logic is managed client-side so it avoids a lot of the problems these games usually have with latency.

It's mostly problems with joining a match which seem related to port forwarding, which was also a problem in the console version. Once a match actually starts it's smooth sailing most of the time; I've only had three matches bug out after starting so far, which isn't actually many overall.

What the frick, why have I never heard of this one before? I had to double check I wasn't misremembering, but it turns out Harmony of Dissidence and Harmony of Despair are two different games. Does it have a singleplayer mode as well, or is it just co-op focused?
You can play singleplayer but its an arcade game and the maps are designed around having a rounded party to reach equipment and shortcuts. Lots of "one person stands on the switch while the other goes through the door" chests and such.

Astral Ring + Chaos Ring on Charlotte lets you be a walking healing station. You'll heal close to 50 which will make you take about 2-5 damage but heal everyone else for 50.
If you have two charlotte's do it then you can just heal each other and use your spells.

And there's Maria.

Belmonts and the the other 3 can be pretty broken with endgame gear but at that point why continue playing, you already reached the end. It's just how close do you have to be to endgame gear to make the game piss easy, and the only people who don't fit that bill at all are the Spellcasters/Maria.

The PC port was an original game based off CV HD, it used its own engine and had a few original characters/stages. It was jank as frick and no longer in development. No reason to play it either when you can simply emulate (or play) the original

you have to absorb it with the shield like any other spell
you'll get the usual sound for a succesful absorb ATTEMPT (the shink! noise) then if successful the usual popup
protip, if you're doing it - do chapter 8, deal 45 damage to the witch to make it heal then immediately hit it again after it heals and it'll usually double cast.

For some reason 2x isn't included in the zoom toggle by default. Go into the options and set 2x on there somewhere so you can click the right stick. I find that to be the sweet spot for visibility.

Nope. I got sonic boots within 10 runs using dual thief rings from belzebub. It might be a coincidence but I've run him around 50 times but the only time sonic boots dropped was with the dual thief rings.

You can push share boxes in front of the iron maidens, this will prevent him from moving to certain one of them.
He summons a puppet in his hand, if it reaches an iron maiden you are teleported inside. Kill the puppet before this happens. Repeat until win.

This game emulates just fine on my ancient PC gtx960, some old i5 2,5ghz. I get minor slowdowns in menus, but gameplay is stable 60fps. Only sometimes the animated backgrounds are freaking the frick out and look like my gpu is dying, but fortunately that's not it.

What made Soma broken in this game? Next to Richter he was my favorite Castlevania MC, but I heard he was broken and was widely used to never got around to playing.
Good spells and has access to the best weapons in the game. He can use shortcuts with Yorick
basically soma is as strong as he was in his own game while most characters are nuetered slightly to fit the game format. If you play him yourself you wont notice a significant power gap but he actually gets stronger the more souls he gets.

Soma is the best most characters are strong or usable. Try them out and find one you like.

considering he only has 4 subweapons to max out he can't be that bad
He has short range on his sword (the sword wave is much weaker). He can spam his sub weapons (the rolling ball and ninja stars) for big damage until he's out of MP. He's short so he can dodge some attacks easier. Since he only has 3 sub weapons, I guess he can level up easier.
Start solo or make a room. It's your choice.

It raises the stat for that level until you either pick up a different food item or die.

Should I grind on my own for a bit before I join people in multiplayer? Haven't played the game and don't know whether a multiplayer lobby with high-level players is the best place to learn the ropes

everyone in the lobby needs the chapter unlocked for it to be played.

If the chapter isn’t unlocked it limits the room from selecting it. It’s usually people who haven’t fixed their network settings or people who enter the room and bail causing skinwalker dupes
