I was going to say, I thought Mega Man 2 was hard until i figured it out. That took years tho but was simple once i really sat down. Frick the others tho, and you're right, they aren't even top difficulty iirc at all.

having played both, i disagree, only MM1 would really compare and even then i'd say its easier than DS1
well, unless you used a guide or something i guess

Shut up you irritating reductive nihilist, NES games are great and Dark Souls is also great, and yes neither one is very difficult on average. I don't play new games anymore but the best of them are probably pretty great too. I trust the corrupt video game industry to produce a few genuinely good works more than I trust some slowpoke simpleton on Ganker who seems to want to trashtalk everything except whatever it feels like pretending to praise (but only at the heavy expense of something else) at the moment.

Battletoads without warps is hard. Castlevania III without continues is somewhat hard. Mega Man games are the kind of thing that kids of only slightly better than average skill would finish on rental - with the exception of the first one, because it doesn't provide passwords and sitting through the whole game in one session is burdensome for a kid. Dark Souls (I've only played the first) is a little bit hard because it beats you down until you get used to it and resolve to meet its challenge, but after that it's pretty easy since dodging is overpowered for a player who takes well to its combat mechanics and upgraded greatshields are overpowered for everybody. (Yes, you can easily win every fight as a clumsy, immovable boulder if your stats and your greatshield's stats are high enough.)

Mega Man games aren't even that hard, even when doing things like buster only or no death. They are fun though.

3 is the hardest of the NES ones if you don't abuse every weapon, extra life and e-tank the game showers you with. There is nothing in the other 5 like some of the Doc Robots.

        >3 is the hardest of the NES ones if you cut out three quarters the mechanics of the game
So just play Dark Souls without leveling?

E-tanks make any fight easier, but I was saying that 3 is the hardest of the NES Mega Man games.

The only retro games harder than Dark Souls would be arcade tittles like Metal Slug but they're hard for wrong reasons AKA insane RNG. Even the best Metal Slug players can't do a 1CC run reliably, they have to luck into it.

That is a very dubious statement. If you can beat Dark Souls 3 without summoning aid, you can beat any classic Megaman game.

Very dumb thread in general because how do you even quantify this? Dark Souls 1 is very easy. Dark Souls 3 is fairly hard. Most Megaman games are fairly easy.

      >Dark Souls 1 is very easy.
are the people saying this sort of thing the kind of people that parry bosses or something? I think it and 3 are about equally medium hard in different ways but I've never parried in my life.

      anyway, mega man

        >anyway, mega man

Not a particularly hard series of games. You have unlimited continues, farmable lives, and E tanks. Even without that, though, one playthrough is usually enough to get you familiar enough with the patterns that you can breeze through your replays.

        >I've never parried in my life
Jesus Christ, did you just Havel tank the final boss? DS1 has extremely generous parry frames, it's like the easiest game to learn to parry. Running around with a buckler and a rapier and one shotting everything is so much fun.

        >are the people saying this sort of thing the kind of people that parry bosses or something?
Parrying bosses is more of a DS2 thing.

I've beaten all of the classic series games except 1 and, I guess 11, mostly for lack of trying. I've beaten X1, X2, and X4, the others, again, for lack of trying. These are not crushingly difficult games. Anyone who thinks so has had their patience and brain power destroyed by playing too many movie games.

No. But 3 is definitely harder than any Megaman game. Megaman isn't Ninja Gaiden where you have to spend hours mastering a level.

              >But 3 is definitely harder than any Megaman game.

              No, this is absolutely ridiculous.

Death barely means jack shit in dark souls, that's why the games sell so well. Fricking playing Donkey Kong Country without savestates is harder than most "hard" modern games SOLELY due to how much more punishing failure is, it totally stops brute forcing unless you put in time commitment to grind for lives. Dark Souls allows you to learn and practice without having to be careful or pay attention, which is something you can only say about an old game with infinite retries or save states.

As a kid I only had Megaman 3 on gameboy (which mixed the bosses from 3 and 4 into one game) and I didn't even know that bosses had weaknesses from the other boss guns so I had to kill them ALL with the fricking mega buster. The reason those level themes are so burned into my brain after all these years just because of how long it took me to beat them doing repetitive unforgiving stages over and over, dropping into pits on Spark Man, dealing with the tadpole penguin bullshit on Gemini Man. Dust Man probably took me the longest to beat, one time I just played that stage over and over and fricking over because I didn't realize the only way to not get crushed by the moving platform near the end was to slide to ensure you had enough speed. Every time I'd try and make it just by running and almost did it but died. There's no hints, there's no helping hand, it's punishing.

There are mountains of brutally hard games out there, but they're mostly regarded as shit for being a transparent endeavor to eat your quarters. Haunted Castle is reviled by many OG Castlevania fans for being too bullshit, which should tell you something.

Souls being treated as some brutally difficult exercise in masochistic difficulty is a phenomenon that only really started with the PC release IIRC with the meme title 'Prepare to Die' Edition which imo was the devs taking prevailing game journo attitudes and running with it, before that it was mostly just treated as a game that punished risky behavior and not paying attention to your environment. After the PC port was when the whole "git gud" spam started and half the player base started treating it as OMG SO HARD.

I never personally thought the games were that difficult cuz like I said if you paid attention and looked around you'd see things like traps or ambushes before they happened, and going slow with your shield up basically kept you safe in 95% of all situations. There's also a shit load of items that a lot of people never bother to use that make fights easier one way or another, like fire bombs or throwing daggers to allow melee characters to pull or outright kill individual enemies safely or items that distract enemies. Plus, you can always grind and level up your character. Not to mention you basically lose nothing when you die as long as you can get back to where you were before to pick up your souls. As long as you aren't wasting consumables and running past every enemy just to die a 2nd time before getting your souls back, each time you die you're only making your character stronger. There's also the whole summoning mechanic which basically lets you have multiple body guards carry you through any area if necessary.

The games are really only as hard as the player makes them and usually difficulty is a direct result of the player being stubborn in their play style or just plain oblivious to certain mechanics.
