I liked resto but when they did the homosexual invasive computer hardware save shit the launcher no longer works for me and I refuse to reinstall my OS for a private server with a shit population, but I did enjoy my time there because of the harsh no afk rules which ruin the other shitty servers with automated bot entertainers and shit.

The majority of the playerbase kept flocking to Braver, Hero and Etoile. Sega made a modernized PSO2 designed to cater to those people because base was a Vita game crippled by its own power creep. That's your combat gone.
They tried copying open world games in the middle of development despite having nowhere near enough manpower and skill for it. That's your quest design gone.
Sega released NGS early, in response to every other project failing. That's your content gone.
Global's own community managers and GMs started antagonizing players, all overlooked because Sega has a hard enough time simply keeping key PSO2 devs from walking out on them again. Combined with everything else, that's your English playerbase gone.
The lead director of Ep5 is the director of New Genesis. He repeated all his bad habits and currently uses the series producer as a shield.

They decided to throw out the game style which defined the PSO series for the last twenty years, in order to pursue a trend that Genshin Impact started maybe a year previously. You liked PSO? You liked PSU? You liked the PSP games on the PSP? Well frick you, dash around the same area in circles for two hours, there's your gameplay.
The ironic thing is that, if they'd just put in NGS and kept everything the same, there wouldn't be a problem. We'd still have PSO2, people who preferred that could still play, and the NGS people could play their game. But they gutted PSO2 so heavily in an attempt to get people to play NGS instead, and the result is that people either got fed up or quit since they weren't interested in NGS.
There's also the zero-content problem. This was... not acceptable, but could be understood, in the first few months of NGS. You aren't going to release a whole new MMO with all the content of your 10-year other MMO right at launch. But by now, it's been two years and four regions and it's still the same thing as at launch? Just the enemies have different colors? No thanks.

On global maybe. On JP a lot of people played the older classes. A decent example for me would be that I could beat a persona trigger solo as fi/hu but couldn't as hero, even though my gear was basically best tier since I was a shitter and got hit too often and hero boost kept being reset.
Even in ep6 the class variety was there because people actually enjoyed playing the other classes. except su, frick su nobody liked su.
So EP4 had 2 directors, one of them became the director for EP5, and is also the director for NGS. EP5 started out with hero, which severely outclassed literally every other class, and buster quests were made with the intent of being the only content for players for the entire episode (they may have opted to give further quests down the line or something, but there was severe backlash). Back when they were introduced, buster quests had some really shitty mechanics: you had both a rank (which scaled and capped your stats at whatever threshold the rank had), and it had a 'cost' to run it, which you could only replenish by running the 'free' version of the quest which gave basically zero rewards. To add insult to injury, the mode died extremely fast and was also REQUIRED to be done via the story board which meant when it was dead you simply couldn't make story progress.

First phase is power up by completing different conditions in different colored squares on your minimap. Second phase is to be a random boss with said power ups.

Yakuza, Altus, and pso2. It's part of the reason why they can't pull the plug on this game. Not only would Eos'ing this game kill there credibility as a company real bad, but they'd no longer have stable income to not be a risk of being bought out again. Something they are trying to avoid the plague. Which is why you keep hearing stories about all the money pso2 and ngs makes, going into games completely unrelated to bettering pso2. The first year of NGS was caused by the Sakura wars revial bombing, then after that it was trying to kick Sonic frontiers out immediately to try and recover from that loss. Now you have Sega dragging atlas in to start bailing water too because they thought they could just use NGS as solely a money printer and this would somehow not only piss of the player base, but also the dev team working on the game and being told there getting there budget cut or moved to another project instead working on this game.
Also their parent company, Sammy makes a frickton of revenue because they're a "NotGambling" company.

PSONGS is already 2 years old if they don't make a reboot or something quick the game is going to die.
The game play loop for base pso2 was great. You could grind weekly and daily shit(more to grind with more alts) and afford a scratch items or two once a week. Then they launched pso2ngs and not was ngs shit but the market ballooned and shit starting going full weimar Germany and items shot up to billions. I feel like sega sent this shit out to die so they could scam Microsoft to pay the bills for their failure and make millions in the process.

I tried it myself but the game is so full of bloat now, I was completely lost and ended up dropping it.
You could try out base PSO2 and forget that NGS exists, play through the story and try out random content in the game. Basically don't treat it as an MMO.
legit the biggest problem with english players in JP pso2 (and I guess global maybe?) is people were all "hey man spam this one specific quest that gives an assload of exp:time until you hit the level cap to join the "ENDGAME", with said ENDGAME being fricking idling in the lobby waiting for EQs.
imo, the way to play pso2 (base) at this point in time would be storyboard 1-3, doing the arks missions to unlock free fields you'll never play in between (if that's how you still unlock them I have no clue), do some extreme quests, storyboard 4, fareg solo fight, ep5, maskman floors until you get bored because 999 floors to get maskman blanco is tedious, ep6, donutman to finish at 100. challenge mode 1/2 is optional (only recommended if you have others to do it with), 3 i have no opinion of.
oh, and to make it more 'authentic' you can't use hero until ep5, casually ignoring that all the existing content prior to ep5 is still trivialised by all the balance changes made in ep5/6.

Ironically I did Duel with 5 different classes and Sodom 100
for maskman it used to be a 5 run limit daily, which got changed to 50 at the end of ep6. donutman was a twice daily with an absolutely shit tier reward for depth 100. I did maskman to like 200, and donutman to 100.
Base PSO2 is not worth it anymore. Everything has been nerfed or stripped out to get people to move to NGS. Game is NOT enjoyable to progress in from a game design standpoint. If you care about the story you're better off watching cutscenes on Youtube without the butchered localization. If you care about ARPG gameplay, you're better off playing another game.

Is NGS supposed to be casual? I never got past level 10 and my power level is too weak to beat the very first story mission. Everywhere I go the monsters are damage sponges, all the world quests provide a pittance of exp, and all my skill points are gated in absolutely moronic platforming challenges in shrines located in bumfrick nowhere hellzones full of mobs three times my level.

if the only the drops were worth a shit. holy frick I haven't played a MMO with as much boring itemization as this. there's no special effects on armor, there's no special attacks like pso1 for weapons, everything is basically "+1 damage" or "+1 hp".
reminds me of 12*/14* (and a few end point 15*) weapons that rather than "generic here's a full weapon variety range with all the same potential have fun" you had shit like gear orochi agito giving you a +400 attack power buff under 50%pp, double orochi giving you a 60?% bonus to break stance specifically, gear experience being a fist dodgy counter spam in lava, or that 14* ds whose name escapes me basically giving you several whirlwinds at a time stacking a lot more damage. fun point: when they first added meteor cudgel the latent for it was uncapped, you could basically infinitely spam whirlwinds because they basically hit critical mass on gauge build speed meaning you could kill free field bosses almost instantly.
at the bare minimum I just want a reason to farm for items beyond "increase BP". but they dumbed down the gameplay design so much that enemy encounter design has also suffered. every boss can be parried spammed because there's no point in gear.

usually audio tracks are the biggest size bloat in games and all those event tracks recorded in their proprietary bloat format will never be used again or maybe used as a paid music disc.
actually in the case of pso2, the biggest bloat (for base pso2, at least) was the costumes. pre-basewear costumes had a file for every colour variant. post ngs basewear is no better, they now have 2 files per basewear: a high quality one for you specifically, and a low quality one that everybody but you uses, and even using the highest graphic level doesn't enable high quality outfits/models for anybody but you unless you mod/dupe/rename the files.
I remember some old PSO2 costumes looked like pixelated shit on other players (and shop preview) but ok on your own character when NGS came out, did they ever do anything about that lmao?
nope. for base pso2 you couldn't do anything about it at all. later outfits got it down to a single file per outfit that just had a colour code assigned to it, but it was still the "you're quality x, they're quality y"
