You're right that you have to be an edgelord to kill the mages in DAO. Even the templars don't actually want to do it, it's just a matter of worst case scenario. They made the mages too sympathetic in DAO and overcorrected in DA2. DAI is more balanced in that regard but they shifted their focus on the elves and turned them into a mary sue race that created everything, are enslaved but have a vast underground network that influences the orlesian empire, and their pantheon is the one that actually exists despite having confirmed the miraculous powers of the sacred ashes of Andraste in DAO (incoming twist revelation that she was a reincarnation of some elven goddess like Flemeth lmao).
Can't wait to play an evil character in Dread Wolf and genocide the elves because of course you'll have to be evil by the current lore's standards to oppose the nig- I mean former slaves.
Kirkwall is example of madness spiral, at start some mage gets executed by templar so other mage feels threatened and start learning blood magic to defend himself better, that gives justification for more harsh treatment, that pushes even more mages into blood magic, that leads to more repression and more pushback that ultimately leads to uncontrollable escalation.
As for the last statement, I doubt that nubioware will be based enough to let you join slaver mage lords of Great House Telvanni, I mean Tevinter, and crush slaves. At best you will be able to support slaves but be ruthless in doing so.

The templars may be occasionally moronic but for me it's all on the mages. Before the chantry when the mages reigned they brought the blight upon the world. With or without templars they are always a threat.
Regarding the nubioware thing, I think opposing Solas and his rebel elves is unavoidable since that's literally how DAI ended. Though I have no doubt they will try their hardest to make him likeable and hope the playerbase feels bad for killing him. I don't really expect to be given the freedom to kill all elves, just the dialogue option to be kinda rude while stopping them. They're also probably gonna have a lot of elves oppose Solas so as to avoid making it a racial thing even though it is 100% a racial thing where you either side with them or genocide them.
If another side of conflict wants to idenitykill you for no other reason than that your distant coworker was sucking demon wiener then you may as well suck demon wiener just to frick their shit up before they kill you, and if you are lucky you may even escape.

Bothe mages and templars were moronic at Kirkwal and system was not working. As opposed to Ferelden, where even after shit have hit the fan due to some homosexual, mages tried to mount an counteroffensive.
Mages were and will be born and have to be schooled, otherwise you will get Redcliff, but Circle system was not the best solution.
I will say it again, even without templars the mages frick shit up. DA mages are not just powerful, they are in constant threat of being possessed. I'm sorry they feel oppressed but there is very good reason for being prejudiced against them. The motherfrickers brought about the blight which nearly ended the world. They also enslaved the entire elven race to use for mass sacrifices if you want to count that. The templars are justified in their paranoia. It's not a chicken/egg situation. The mages started it. Even a good person that is born a mage is dangerous to everyone around him and should be supervised. The circles may not work as intended but they are a better option than both a magocracy and leaving them unchecked.
The only character worth playing in Dragon Age is a female elf mage who sides with the Templars so you can piss EVERYONE off.

Those psychos happen to be the only group of people with actual shreds of a soul (metaphysical term), since everyone without a direct connection to the Fade is canonically a soulless mutant in that universe, which got fundamentally fricked and broken (on a metaphysical and dimensional level) ages ago.
