Probably because it was cheaper than way.
unpopular opinion but i love the 3d models. adds some charm to the horror. VLR's art direction was better though than ZTD.
For me they were decent enough.
I think I prefer the sprites of the first game because the movements of the characters were more fluid, the 3d models used for VLR were kind of static.
And that's exactly why VNs don't have black loading screens

VLR is overrated, 999 was way better
The atmosphere in VLR was very immersive. 999 had a more concise and less cluttered story but VLR had some unique stuff going on. It was way more creepy and isolative.
VLR had better puzzles and I enjoyed the character interactiona more. 999 had by far the best horror atmosphere however. I was bracing myself all game for VLR to hit me with something like the Axe ending (it was my first, what a ride) but it never happened. VLR is too gentle in that regard.

It's funny you mention that ending because it's the only one that came close to 999's horror. Even then, it doesn't have the same bite as your deaths in 999.

Not the same anon, but the tone of the first game is better than the second one.
I think Uchi wanted to make this one a gorefest, which in my opinion, was a bad decision.
I think the best chilling moment in VLR was when you find grandpa and clover's bodies in the infirmary. You can kind of guess grandpa telling her who he really is before both get killed off.
ZTD was the best in the horror element but 75% it turns to funny wacky literal fanfiction sci fi garbage. But seriously if we could have a horror adventure game in the vain of ZTD first part. I'm all for it.
ZTD does on paper have the most horrific deaths (especially the hydrofluoric acid showers) but the presentation is just way too whacky for me to take seriously.

I'm pretty sure his robot arms were incased in material meant to look like skin, same as Luna.
His eye was full robot 100% of the time tho, complete bullshit no one asked him about it and he somehow didn’t notice it

i really wish they didn't make dio such an obvious bad guy. I get alice fits the role of "jerk but with a heart of gold" but I was half expecting dio not to be a villain and then you get to the bomb reveal and it's just really?

I think it only plays three times in VLR(Luna/Quark/True Ending) and that's all it takes to leave a huge impression on the player.

Can someone explain to me why 999 is better than VLR?. Played all three games and never got a good argument than story is more concise. Is that the only way a story can be better than the other? VLR to me is much better because as other mention much more immersive with the rooms, I much more enjoy the cast in VLR. The reveals in VLR to me was much more impressive. The expansiveness of VLR made me want to get all the endings. Also the 3d environment made the atmosphere actually feel claustrophobic. Compared to 999. The idea of Game theory worked better in VLR than 999. Voice acting again suited better for VNs In general. Lastly the true end was better than 999 obviously it leads us to ZTD, but before the frick up it was awesome, exhilarating to see the end.
I liked both pretty equally. ZTD is the only one I dislike.
why does no one ever discuss the puzzles in the games? It's always story this, characters that. It's not a full VN holy crap. And ZTD had decent puzzles I think, I don't really remember ANY puzzle from any of the games
