For the longest time there was no extreme seething over Cynthia. People might have found goddess threads cringey but that's as far as it went.
Later during the SwSh hype season Leon got revealed as the strongest trainer ever. Leon was always controversial, many people were not fans of this. Then Yawngay did what he does best and started relentlessly seething over the DS games to defend Leon, this was the birth of Cynthia vs Leon arguments, however it never really went that far.
The real catalyst was the Masters 8 tournament in the Ashnime. Everybody that uses Ganker knows that when two characters fight there is bound to be shitposting. However, it seems that some Ashnime fans project very strongly onto the characters. Some people genuinely seem to think they are Ash, maybe they think they are married to Iris, I don't know. In any case, Cynthia defeating Iris seems to have broken a couple of people. Around this time the hate really increased. Cynthia troonjaks were made. Anons really hoped Cynthiagays would have a meltdown after she loses to Ash and went to other forums for screencaps. Now we have the voregay.
