Kairi was only added because every friendship group is contractually obligated to have, at least, the MC, the rival, and the girl. The MC is easy because the series is about them. The rival is also easy, they just have to parallel the MC in some way but maybe slightly edgier. But it is glaringly obvious that Kairi had no plan other than to be "the girl." After the girl is saved what the frick else is he supposed to do? Well the intelligent thing would've been to use her as a vehicle to explore the history of Hollow Bastion. Only Sora can't know too early that there are other worlds, therefore Kairi can't tell him, therefore shitty amnesia.
Calling Kairi wasted implies that she ever had potential. And she didn't. She never had a purpose other than to give Sora something to chase in the first game. To put it in perspective, fricking Xion had more of an impact on the overall plot than Kairi did.

Well it's a failure of writing. The idea is that Sora has to learn how shit works so Sora, and the player, can be explained at by the other characters how the world works. Especially since that explanation changes based on who's explaining it. I agree with you. People being unaware that there are other worlds is the least important thing in this series. You can say

Except they don't. These stages, especially the Disney stages, are ramshackled to the plot of their original movies barring a few. So Jafar will never try to leave Agrabah even if he knows what a keyhole is.
And I'd like to specify, this wouldn't be a problem if KH were limited to one game. But now there's entire Kingdom Hearts lore with licensed characters owned by Disney. It was always going to be a janky mess.

Kairi lacks a purpose most of the time. Since the main characters are Sora, Donald and Goofy, Kairi's an unnecessary extra. She also lacks a drive to see and explore other worlds, which clashes with the central core of the games being about going around to different worlds. Kairi was designed to be a rock, something that Sora could find his way back to eventually, but since these games are always about journeys, she ends up only having a significant role near the end of thegames.

It's an action game. If you don't directly contribute to combat in some way, you don't have much purpose. That's the inherent limitation of video games. Only characters that contribute to gameplay matter in the end. The majority of your time is dedicated to the gameplay meaning any character who doesn't contribute only has a minimum amount of screentime dedicated to them.

He's already got a Navi, look at Jiminy Cricket. She wouldn't be chattering in his ear, Kairi would be more like Yen Sid in that she'd outline broad stroke goals and leave Sora to figure out the particulars himself.
