Chasing The West is Killing Small Japanese Developers

https://www.famitsu.com/news/202309/22317990.html

>I heard from Hayashi D3P that he would like to sell more overseas than in Japan. However, based on these numbers, about half of the 13,000 copies are sold in Japan. At that point, it can be seen that the product has not reached overseas , so it seems that some kind of error or concept error has occurred.

This publisher used to put out fun ecchi games that sold over 100k. But now even niche JP devs want to pull an FFXVI and abandon their region in the hopes of getting big Western bux. How many niche JP developers can we expect to go bankrupt chasing this nonexistent golden goose?

lol I just bought this game last week for like $4 from the Hong Kong PSN. It's total trash, like most fanservice games. Didn't know it was gonna be an isekai, but I should've known better. One blurry level split into bite-sized chunks and reused across 30 missions. Ridiculous bullet sponge enemies on the harder difficulties. Melee weapons are somehow the best weapons in a game called BULLET girls. Valkyrie Drive is still the best game in the genre, guns be damned.

Ecchi games have moved to mobile. Other games can't compete against free titles with tons of fanart and large fan bases. No one will buy ecchi games like they used to even if they're on Switch. It's a dying genre like RTS and MMOs outside of mobile.

      Anonymous

They easily could but just chose not to. Can you name a single Switch game that has lewd art on the scale as gacha? So many have pretty good looking live 2d and even good 3d models, I can't think of a single Switch game that's anywhere near as suggestive as some gachas.
And what's funny is its not even the same companies. Like its not all the companies that used to make lewd premium console games that switched to gacha, its entirely different ones. And the older ones just can't keep up, in fact some try to make gacha's and fail even harder.

Those gacha games aren't really games and it can cost the same amount as a new game to get the content you want.
Gacha games tend to have worse gameplay than Senran Kagura. They are also not 3d.

Depends on if they buy up exclusivity for key games. They want you to treat it like the Switch where you get a Bluetooth controller and hook it into your TV and use joycons on the go. They'll probably have some stupidly expensive dock for it at some point. They could go through GamePass model too through Apple arcade, if Xbox is still around then Apple can last as long as they want to last and it potentially steals PC users and phone users away from Microsoft and Google if they get important exclusives locked to iOS.

These are very toned down games from what an ecchi game used to be. They sold better than this game but it's clear that restraining the ecchi is restraining the sales, neither of them matched

Same publisher, much more successful game even though it's not targeting a mainstream Western audience at all.

Its crazy how they don't get it.
If you're making a niche game with mediocre at best gameplay how do you think people will buy it? How will they even see it unless you spend millions on advertising, and even then how would they get you to buy it if its just to advertising the medicore gameplay?
The answer is lewds. There's so many games I've purchased solely out of coom. If the coom is good enough people will share it and it'll spread around to others coomers that might buy it. The idea that somehow all these companies have decided the very money maker of their games should be toned down is just insane.

It's either they don't get it anymore or they're just stalling for time until there's more favorable winds. Right now you got Sony, CERO, and sometimes even Steam going against everything that make ecchi financially viable for anything that isn't gacha trash

They seem to be doing just fine. In fact, even the lackluster sales of Trails From Zero/Azure on steam due to most of the fans having already played fan ports were deemed to have "exceeded expectations". They have low standards for sure.

Going up an age rating and thus limiting your market always has a negative effect on sales. It's why so many games push for T instead of M, why movies push for Pg13 instead of R, even when it makes no sense like Deadpool. Regulation changes that take mild suggestive content and redefine that as necessitating a higher age rating means de facto censorship or face a large amount of lost sales. It's effectively the same as government mandated censorship backed with a large cash penalty as far as developers are concerned. And the worst part is this is influenced by the whims of outspoken twittards and the court of public opinion more than any actual concern for whatever effects if any such content has on any individual

Don't they effectively ban naked breasts on console games? I heard that the Witcher and other Western games had the nudity removed (not just genitals)on the Japanese console releases to avoid the equivalent of an Ao esrb rating.

                Anonymous

Yes, CERO has a strict no nipples policy. They've also gotten harsher about panty shots, but I think those can still be included in their M-equivalent. Outside of that they tend to be less strict about sexuality and more strict on gore than other ratings agencies though.

                Anonymous

Esrb got a bit more strict recently but mostly on marketing and stuff like box artwork, thats why smash announcements just said character name rather than game, pegi have no issues.

Most devs pick lower rating for stupid reasons because aside that they are quite loose.

keeping lewd games off consoles or making them censor content drives more players to gachas where devs can extract even more money from them. it's clearly working, the gacha industry is huge and fgo in particular has made billions.

Switch also has those lewd games. Not all of them of course, but enough to cater to the otakus. I wouldn't be surprised if a significant part of Switches sold in Japan was because of those.

most of the lewd games on switch are mobile game tier and none of them come close to the pure degeneracy of something like venus vacation. the fanbases for those switch games are very small anyway, they are super niche titles.and i think the switch is only now starting to come close to moving the number of units that the ds did when the market was way smaller and they had more competition because sony was still making handhelds.

i don't think the very small community of autists that love ecchi but for some reason hate the medium that nearly every ecchi game is on are doing much to carry switch sales. like what are we even looking at as far as lewd switch games are concerned? the qureate titles and were getting removed?

The f2p structure gives neets a chance to play the game and advertise for them too, same with artists that will draw porn and bring in even more players. Mobage like FGO were carried HARD by the porn, porn is the best advertisement a mobile game can receive and then people jerk off to their waifu for years and keep whaling to max out every version of her so they can show off screenshots in the large communities f2p games have or to show off on their friends list like it's a damn rolex..

The games are fine, but it just gets harder and harder to get into them when the numbered title keeps getting bigger and you need to play 10 games to buy the new one.

nope, but I went on a tear of Trails games in June through August. Beat all 3 Trails in the sky, the crossbell games, and got through CS1 and halfway through CS2 before I had to take a break for all the other games coming out. Glad I ended up playing them, it's pretty much the last major RPG franchise I haven't played up to this point

I've done the rest since before the Crossbell games were on Steam which I'm going through currently at a much slower pace. 5 games in a row starring running laps around Crossbell is quite a toll.

nope, but I went on a tear of Trails games in June through August. Beat all 3 Trails in the sky, the crossbell games, and got through CS1 and halfway through CS2 before I had to take a break for all the other games coming out. Glad I ended up playing them, it's pretty much the last major RPG franchise I haven't played up to this point

No they literally hired Californians to their writing team.
Kuro 2 has a side quest where you have to stop some people who try to destroy a Mishy festival and cause violence because the Calvard Mishy has a different "localized" design from the Crossbell Mishy. It feels like they are directly strawmanning people who have issues with bad localization, you can just feel whoever wrote that is a bitter localizer.

Nier Automata had an intentional anime-inspired art style. We know this because it was a sequel to something- the YORHA idol play- which emphatically did not, and subsequently switched to match on post-Automata revivals

Yeah, gachas print money and use sex to sell but it's fairly common there, anime breasts being a selling point for games that aren't f2p on mobile seems much rarer these days.

              >anime breasts being a selling point for games that aren't f2p on mobile seems much rarer these days.
Of course. The best sexy anime girls are on F2P gacha games. Full-priced premium games cannot match the quantity, variety, or sexiness the gacha games have. As a player, you can also choose which sexy anime girl to spend your money on as well as continue to get new choices in sexy anime girls as the live service game updates over time. No one looking for sexy anime girls in their video games would look to the full-priced premium market.

That's unfortunate. I despise mobile gacha games because I find them shallow cheap garbage.

False, these games have a gacha system so to get all the characters and skins that you want you would need to spend the same amount as a premium game
Also most of these games have worse gameplay than Senran Kagura, only have 2d images rather than 3d models, and the lewds themselves are no better compared to console games. In some cases console games like Senran Kagura and the first two ryza games actually show more skin. Also these games tend to not have bikini outfits

It's 2023, zoomers love anime, kpop shit and japanese games. Sure some western games are going to still top the charts most of the time because they have more mass appeal, but you haven't had it this easier to sell than nowadays doing what you do.
Seeing cute anime girls shooting stuff can have it's meme fun and that's why people bought those games, you delete than and all you have is the usual boring zombie cooperative game that every 3d indie studio shits but with even more jank, why would anyone play that? The Switch uses drastically different architecture than the other consoles. Playstation and Xbox are AMD, the Switch is the sole console using ARM. If you're developing for the Switch then you can easily port to mobile but at that point, just develop for mobile, turn it into gacha, and skip the Switch altogether. Which is...what the ecchi devs are doing.

Those are mostly indies that do something different to set them apart from other games. AA/AAA games are mostly retreads that need to find some other way to stand out and graphics are the easy way to do that. So is making it an ecchi game instead.

Graphics not mattering on PC just shows how much people want cool new experiences than the same old shit the games industry keeps churning out.

japan is fricking over their own devs by taking on extremely shitty projects like this
they've already made a bunch of "dude SOULS but ANIME LMAO" vidyas and almost all have been flops

instead of innovating they just keep churning shit out because the market philosophy of Japanese game studios is "throw shit at the wall and hope it sticks" - you work on 100 shitty projects and then one gets big and that's all your studio makes from then on, forever.
they're trying hard to make "anime souls" stick because it's an obvious play, eventually one will come up with a cool character, cool mechanic, or interesting twist on the genre and everyone will shit their pants over it.

has nothing to do with muh west, muh coomers, muh anime and everything to do with japan's philosophy on gamedev. they did this with literally every genre of game that's been popular in japan domestic market from horror, to mecha, to RPGs, and even coomer shit. for every "artificial academy" there's 1000 "sexy moron goes to the market" or whatever garbage-tier clones get pumped out every year.

There's thousands of western devs out there making licensed games

did you even read my post? i said it's an obvious play and eventually one will stick

just like with licensed games, for every thousand shitty "dude it's smash with more Black folk" there comes along some absolute gem like simpsons hit&run

it's a market saturation philosophy that's present in both markets, but more intense in Japan

          Anonymous

Then it's not a problem since the devs making the anime souls lmao games are already paid. Doesn't mean that souls lmao games are the only kinds of games they can make.

it just delays the innovation, literally all industries do this, not just vidya.

But it's strange, at that time the early-mid PS4 and the Vita are full of Japanese market appealing games.

Switch is now one of the most popular consoles ever in Japan and it seems like JP market focused games are deader than ever.

Well, Sony specifically killed Vita off so nips would stop making games for it and focus on PS4.
Then they put in their cesorship policies on top of CERO so you couldn't release your game on PS4 if they didn't allow it.

I've played Ed-0; you can just pirate it. It's... not great. Not completely awful but pretty bad. The game is a 3d classical roguelike like Shrien the Wanderer or Baroque. It's mired in ancient game design and overall it's very grindy. The average zombie has about 600 HP and your attacks do 30 damage to start with. You need to collect items and level up with money between runs to even keep up with damage.

With ecchi you get a dedicated fanbase who will sing unending praises about the game, and you can get away with bad graphics, bad gameplay, because people are just playing the game to see some breasts.

If this game had cute girls at least (not even ecchi) it would have double the sales minimum.

Samurai Maiden is just as low budget and dull to play and did much better.

Try to remember that small budget games can make a reasonable profit off of a proportionally small number of sales. Not every company needs the triple A, > 10 million sales or flop due to ridiculous budgets.

The problem is always how a game is advertised. That ninja in ed0 has a big cleavage and all they had to do was stuff the camera in there in several trailer shots and make the graphics a bit more colorful.
This is exactly what they did with Samurai Maiden, where the trailers practically felt like they were made with vtuber fans in mind (with 2d cutout still talking to you) and showcasing skirt flipping, even though they censored them with black void in photo mode etc.

Nobody is talking about needing top tier revenue or advertisement. When I say flop I mean underperforming, even towards adjusted expectations.
            >1 developer
Regardless if it had breasts or not, as long as at least 100 people bought it for $30 or so then it's a success. Those don't count since indies of that scope rely more on how good their games are rather than breasts. We're talking about devs, several.

Even though the number of consumer bishoujo games is decreasing compared to a while ago, it is thanks to all the users who have supported us that we have been able to achieve this much with new IPs. thank you!

I don't even need ecchi, I just want Japanese-style writing, characters, worldbuilding, and yes, even humor. Preferably wrapped in an JRPG gameplay style. But it's so rare from Japan now, we just get shitty western indies poorly emulating the SNES era while sprinkling their culture war into things.

They're leaning the hard way again, the west doesn't fricking want "westernized" Japanese games, the who like Japanese games in the west like what they're already used to. The w*stoids who already aren't going to be won over because it has zombies in it or is somewhat based on a western IP or chasing western trends.

More like they're aping the wrong things. Original inspiration for first Jrpgs was Ultima IV. The original inspiration for mangas and animu came from old Disney films and franco-belgian sci-fi and fantasy comics. Japanese took all the best ideas from those and then added their own cultural twists to them. That shit still works.

Japanese developers who try to imitate Call of Duty and "what westerners might like" are missing the whole point. Metal Gear Solids and Death Strandings are successful games because they're heavily inspired by western films, but made through the lens of a mentally ill japanese weirdo. The awkward and weird japanese twist is not a bug, its a feature.

        >ut made through the lens of a mentally ill japanese weirdo. The awkward and weird japanese twist is not a bug, its a feature.
That's what struck me so hard with the FF16 marketing and put me off from even buying it. They were trying so hard to complain about westerners perceiving Japanese devs as an 'other' and how they wanted to buck those stereotypes, thinking they were derogatory when they are in fact the main reason Japanese games have any fanbase overseas at all. Call it an exoticism or orientalism if you want, but people want Japanese flavor.

Sure. Japan is no stranger to aping the west for shit. Just look at Metroid, it's whole thing is being if Alien was done as sci-fi anime, most JRPGs ape directly not just Ultima, but Also D&D, and Tolkien. The difference here is, they were still distinctly Japanese products, and they understood what made them good, at least a little. Trying imitate something like CoD or GoW, or putting zombies in because of The Walking Dead, without understand why people liked those things in the first place is a fools errand and doomed for failure.

Resident Evil franchise is like a japanese love letter to western horror B-movies. Japanese do "get" zombies, as long as the devs aim at doing B-horror with them or surreal Junji Ito-tier shit like Forbidden Siren games.

            Anonymous

Resident Evil is a hodgepodge of various different western b-movie horror tropes. Even the first game had everything from giant killer animals, man-eating plants, killer sharks, and escaped mutants from an underground lab, it was never JUST zombies. So yeah, I agree, they understood it then, but most games that focus on just zombies, namely from Japan miss the mark entirely, Not saying it can't work, but we need a Kojima-esq horror nut to make it happen first.

99% of japanese zombie games eventually have some other monsters instead. Only franchise that comes to mind that only has zombies is Oneechanbara. And those are like braindead bargain bin musou games where you get tons of zombies on the screen at once and the whole appeal is to just mash buttons and see the screen fill with cowgirl breasts and blood. Forbidden Sirens start as zombie games too but in all of those games the more the game progresses, more the Shibito or Yamibito turn into weird eldritch monstrosities.

The difference between stuff like MGS or Metroid and the shit in this thread is that in case of the latter there is a noticeble stench of pathetic desperation. They're just trying to ape something that's popular somewhere else as opposed to giving it their own spin.

    I 100% Ed-0.

    It sold like shit because
    >the marketing in the beginning was terrible. They made it seem more like "Earth Defense Force but with zombies" instead of the real-time Mystery Dungeon clone that it is
    >very unforgiving in the Early Access state. When you die, you barely could tell what even killed you, and you lost all of your gold, which was used to upgrade your stats among other things. Casuals HATE real difficulty like this and prefer "casual difficulty" ala FromSoftware
    >Despite it being exclusive to PCs, made zero other attempts to market the game property, such as a lack of collaboration from ANY V-Tuber
    >would go radio silent for months on end during the Early Access period.
    >Still exclusive to PC platform despite it coming out in July

And so on and so forth. The game in its current state is actually good and enjoyable, but their first impression was so terrible that it basically doomed them to failure.

The issue is, it appeals to no-one, and isn't good enough for word of mouth to make the difference.
And I think it got a PS4/5 release too, but that really makes no difference.

        >The issue is, it appeals to no-one
I mean, Mystery Dungeon games seem to appeal to some people, or else they wouldn't keep making them.
Good marketing is almost always a crucial aspect to most successful media, and every opportunity they had to market the game, they did everything they WEREN'T supposed to do.
If they were just straight in the beginning with the game being a Mystery Dungeon clone and made sure the console releases were at the same time PC gout out of Early Access, it would have seen some modest success at worst considering its low budget in the first place.

If it was a Mystery Dungeon style game, then they did a shit job showing it. And even if people knew that pre-hand, the overlap between the style and tone of the game, and the people who like Mystery Dungeons is limited to put it lightly, and much more likely to just replay what they have or pick up Shiren or the Chocobo one. This game had no chance in hell of finding an audience, it unironically would've done better if they just made the ninja girl the focus and made it into an Onechanbara clone or something.

            >it unironically would've done better if they just made the ninja girl the focus and made it into an Onechanbara clone or something.
This is also where things are being muddled.
Lots of people are saying "why wasn't this game like *game D3 developed/published in the past* instead of a Mystery Dungeon clone?
Because it never was going to be. D3 are only the publishers of this game. Lancarse are the developers, and they co-developed Etrian Oddessy and Strange Journey so they have experience in dungeon crawlers. They just wanted to take that knowledge and apply it to a real-time action game instead.
It never was going to be like Oneechanbara in the first place because that isn't what the developers had in mind, and D3's logo being plastered on the front like they were the ones that developed it only hurt the reception of the game.

Not saying it was ever going to be that, but it SHOULD'VE just based on what we've seen. It was a dumb idea from the start, and misguided at best, espeically if they thought the west was ever going to be on board. Unless your name is Pokemon, Mystery Dungeon games are VERY niche, it was never going to be the kind of games streaming morons would plug on their Twitch accounts like they obviously wanted it to be if this trailer is anthing to go by

What the frick is this trailer.

I only said Oneechanbara because it's the only kind of game I could imagine this even being slightly successful as, and even then I don't it wouldn't been that much better.

Steam is oversaturated with tens of thousands of games. Ideally, a new digital storefront would be created for Japanese developers attempting to localize their games for the West. This is the equivalent of adding a single book to a library with 40 different floors.

The game doesn't look that bad, the gameplay seems perfectly fine, but the trailers reminded of goat simulator lol randum, the enemy variety is really poor, and the price, 29.99 for a zombie killing game, same price of RE2R, that is no.
The concept itself is not bad, however, medieval japanese dungeon crawler survivor horror is not a block buster outside of japan, too many niches in a single product, got please the normalgays or the coomers at point, moving the setting to a viking era, medieval europe, or even 17th century europe would have doubled the sales numbers, but I'm speaking to the void devs aren't going to read my posts.

      >Give a REASONABLE price not $60 for something that looks like it came from the PS3 era
The vast majority of these niche developers have always used fanservice as a crutch to compensate for the lack of good gameplay and know they can get away with charging full price for the small audience they know they'll attract with that rather than being able to or interested in making good gameplay. They or their publisher don't equate low production budget to appropriately low retail price because they don't think they'd get that many more sales to justify it.

Not many Japanese developers are capable of making high-budget open world games. Square Enix is the one who got burned while Capcom has got their western appeal figured out after going through the growing pains earlier on during the 2010s. I don't think Forspoken will have particularly similar cases following it.

Should have Koizumi Shinjiro as PM to allow bikini from anime and Jap console game. Not feminsit scum like Kishida Fumiko and Kono Taro.

Here's a cool trick. I don't know why JP devs aren't doing this.

    1. Take an old game that was really popular. You want an old game because old games had much smaller budget. You want a popular game because they had good gameplay and sold well.
    2. Copy that game, but with sexy anime girls.

    Guaranteed 100k sales minimum.

FYI DOAX3 Scarlet was ported to Switch and PS4, with the PS4 version being censored.
VV use the same engine so it's probably KT not willing to port the game to Switch, especially considering that they are themselves trying to cater to the western market.

Because Kishida banned bikini from Japanese console game in July 2022. Bikini on console game? Tax raise on the company.

Japanese gacha are also censoring now. Apple forced Gust to censor feet and the Atelier game is already precensored. Soon there will be no more bikinis in gacha either.

Would FGO have ugly rashguards as "swimsuit" instead of bikini next year, like BA? I thought only Jap gachas can have bikini, while no Korean and Chinese gacha can have bikini. Despite Kishida banned bikini from anime and Jap CS games.

FGO is immune because the Japanese are so utterly obessed with Fate merchandise that not even Sony which owns the rights to FGO won't even touch it. It's their sacred cow.

Actually, FGO had a period where they slowed down on the fanservice, which angered people last year because the summer event had nothing for lewd enjoyers.
They went back to normal this year with Chloe's outfit.

Did Gust not ran to console for more fanservice? No meaning to relase on gacha if they censor pantyshot in gacha. I thought Japanese gacha can have bikini, no Korean and Chinese gacha can.

Did Gust not ran to console for more fanservice? No meaning to relase on gacha if they censor pantyshot in gacha. I thought Japanese gacha can have bikini, no Korean and Chinese gacha can.

      >Did Gust not ran to console for more fanservice?
That was before they got bought by KT and current KT is trying hard to chase western audience which is why they censored many of their recent games.

More like Kishida banned bikini from Jap console game since July 2022.

Tomino's concern was right. Japanese anime and games will be doomed by ESG, wokism, feminism, LGBT, and Korea and China will take over. Korea and China never care about ESG. they are resillent to wokism,LGBT for having 5000 years of history, having sturdy belief like Deep rooted tree. LoL and Valorant isn't woke because these are Chinese games.

you either go balls out on the shit you wanna do and don't let anyone get in your ear about the high level concept or you chase popular trends. but even if you chase trends, the game still has to be somewhat presentable. This is not presentable. Ragdolls are a completely shit mechanic that only a few games (like Yakuza) can barely pull off.
