What do devs use for these stories? I've seen Twine here and there, but it always felt very janky as the user. And Visual Novel engines feel poorly adapted for text heavy games.

I assume it's because they store all the saves on their site/server/whatever, so they want to make sure a sequel is actually going to be happening before they start keeping saves from a previous game. So many projects die, no point wasting data on a story that may or may not ever be continued.
But I don't know how much data is spent keeping track of all the saves. Might be minuscule.

Im porting to Twine not because Ive failed to comprehend Choicescript but because the frickers banned my longstanding CoG forum account for reasons I wont get into. Once the port job is done, which I give a month or so, Ill post the final demo which has the initial set up and the first murder case. Game is structured a lot like LA Noire which was a big inspiration for how I went about things.
I will not post again until the demo is ready. But I know one or two people were interested enough to care.

The only thing this experience had altered is that I will be putting some sections in where you have to appear in court if you take a suspect alive. I have some experience of that now.
I was in jail due to a DUI and subsequent Probation Violation. Very stupid shit but I had some connections so it wasnt an unpleasant stay.
The overall tone of the story is relatively light. Immortals are goofy eccentrics when they aren't murderous, the city coroner is a magically reanimated corpse you can bang, the entire department is filled with characters who are direct references to the piles of detective fiction I have consumed over the years. As much as I list True Detective and LA Noire as influences I am not really capable of being that self serious.

Ruo being on his way to learn Qli on his own lessens it somewhat, but it causes a dissonances where the game tells you you are a god who will make everyone else in your world look like ants in comparison, and then returning to your regular sect life filled with impossibly old and powerful people, who are both fakes that were trained wrong and sages with thousand battles experience. Not to mention that Qli in gameplay sucks.

That's definitely the biggest problem. Now I have to permanently lose my limited EXP to do any special actions, so obviously I won't do special actions for the remainder of the game.
I don't like the twist personally because I find it very hard to take the world seriously given this context. Who cares that Tang Ruo is the celestial heir anymore if his entire ancestry was just meant to be harvested to some fist god anyway.
The whole rebellion is hard to care about as well, even if the world finds out that inner energy is a lie they won't be able to cultivate Qi anyway so who really cares?

Probably not if you're commercial. Choicescript allows free use only if you don't make money off the thing you've made, and all of the Twine refugees have at least a ko-fi or Patreon. That makes it so they'd have to write the new code if they go Twine, I think.

Is there any point in running a Royalist route over saboteur? It looks like the only thing you get is the ability to storm the Elves embassy, which is pretty based, but you lose out on wulfbucks.
I think clean royalist is the only route that you can get if you stay at your estate for the first part of the game. Which is something I generally do because fricking men at the capital isn't worth it if Cassius or Cauis don't love me back.

You can get all of them except for early saboteur. Wulfram is enough of a gentleman to trust you to side with him.
It's a lot harder to fulfil the reqs for Castermaine as a saboteur and running an early saboteur is mostly for charisma builds since you don't get much out of it otherwise and you need to join Rendower for that which is a pretty meh club and unlikely to benefit you much next game since, uhhh, it's the Wulframite leadership.
It's much harder to pull of since you have to make the Royalist like you to get benefits at the end while also keeping the Wulframites in the dark so they don't kick you out. Not to mention that it kills your reputation and will most likely make it impossible to negotiate with anyone in the future since they know you are a filthy backstabber.

Don't worry I want to be able to say someone published me so CoG is the superior choice, I just have a few clauses to work out before I can work with HG and had some free time that couldnt be spent writing (babies crying ruins moods) so I tested if I could make Twine look good with radiobuttons and widgets replacing my gosub commands. It also solves the issue of changes in the menu not showing immediately and it lets people make local savefiles so saves stop breaking. Definitely has advantages and it's working so far, but I'd only do twine if CoG blocks me on stuff or is going to take years to publish (RIP zaper-sama).
To be honest, I'll probably make my WiP free. I'm not making any money from it anyway even if it releases (Russia, lol), so I'll simply be a published writer and do this stuff for fun. Hunting trip, I think it is standard practice to introduce you to the protagonist slowly. Get to know them better before getting into the meat and potato's of it. Since you brought up George Martin, Frodo doesn't instantly know about the rings powers and is traveling to throw it into a volcano. You are introduces to him in his natural habitat to get a feel for him first before the plot really kicks into gear.

I get that but how am I supposed to give shit about any of these characters after that revelation so early in the series. If it was done right at the end of the book, after the tournament and some more time spent bonding with characters, it'd be a lot better. But as it is, it's supposedly right in the middle of the first book of the series. It's just moronic, the book should have ended with the expedition and massive revelations, and the coma timeskip should be in between books. Now it's just a meaningless timeskip and big mechanic change halfway through for no benefit.

Yeah, it's incredibly shitty that after the fight where you need to spend 5 qli minimum just to survive, needing a second check with a completely different stat is dumb. The difficulty should depend on the points you have with her. Mentioning it, are those points even counted somewhere, I couldn't find them in the saves.

I was looking through the code and the fight with the ice/fire powers is pretty much a shorter version of what I was hoping for. I do think keeping the Chronomancer appearance to it's original intention is better. It's a pretty big divergence if you kill all the team and could be used to show you can't change things that much at that stage of your powers. I do think the time fight should be changed, mainly just because "kill them all" is already an option and it just feels kind of cheap to make that the default if you want to fight back when the other powers don't get that. It's also odd that passing the presence check to justify killing red harry to the team leads to the flit attack regardless instead of the vote or some kind of escape.
