Chrono Trigger

It's next on my backlog of old videogames I'd like to play, but there is an issue. Which version should I play, the original or the remake? I've heard that the remake has more content but it looks like one of those shitty emulator "sprite improvement" filters were applied to it.

SNES Chrono Trigger with the Retranslation patch you can find on cdromance.

Is the content of the remastered version not worth playing it?

Honestly I never played the DS remake, but from what I've seen online and the comments regarding it in general the additional content is not worth it - it adds a new ending that 'tries' to tie up the story with Chrono Cross (which you can find on youtube), and there's like some sort of infinite dungeon where you can grind your way to some new equipment, the usual late game or new game+ grind which in my opinion doesn't seem too attractive to me.

There's a SNES rom version that is called "Chrono Trigger: Complete" it seems to be the best one to play while keeping the original experience mostly intact.

            Snes9x is pretty good.

        Play the SNES original.
The nu-DEmasters are shit. The extra content is meh as frick.

I like how FF6 and Chrono Trigger have a million retranslation patches and none of them are made by people who actually know Japanese

The original SNES version, easily. This isn't even a question.

This guy fricks. Yeah pretty much this - you can either play the original or use the retranslation patch I mentioned, both are good tbh.

      DS has the superior translation
It has some extra content that is kinda shit but is optional so yeah, go with that

As an old fart who has played every single version of the game, go with the Steam one.

At release it was the absolute shittiest version of them all, and the worst way to experience the game. Squenix listened and after a hundred updates it is now the best version of them all.

      >crisp SNES graphics, none of that blurry filter shit, that's optional
      >qualitiest audio
      >widescreen
      >has the FMVs from the PS1 version
      >has the extra content of the DS version
      >has auto battle mode

If anything, its the only version that looks really great on HD screens nowadays.

Stay the hell away from the Chrono Cross port, though.

Snes version is the definitive version in my opinion. If you can stand scanlines they do add quite a bit to the visuals.

Snes version + the "complete" romhack on the emulator with bileniar filtering on and TV filter looks good to me, I'll try that.

Huh, it is? That's good to know.

      >>has the FMVs from the PS1 version

These are unequivocally huge flaws and also compelling reasons for why OP should avoid that version.

? those fmvs are super cool, and the extra content is optional stuff with a cool boss

The FMVs just repeat things that already happened, they are really intrusive and they break the flow of some crucial scenes.

They look nice, but it's silly that they show you something happening in an animated cutscene and then the game immediately replays the same thing in the in-engine version of it. Also the original intro is better than the animation.

      >>has the FMVs from the PS1 version
why would you want this? these are unironically a negative. In particular the one before the title screen that you can't skip past without also missing the kino SNES title intro.

This is not even true. The steam version does not have all the content and is missing several cutscenes. I had to watch some cutscenes on youtube because they arent in the steam version.

The nicest thing about the DS version is that it saves the endings after you unlock each one and can go back to view them. Thats pretty much it.

SNES original. The new content added since the DS port is really bad.

I just played it this past month for the first time too, emulated the SNES version with whatever the latest translation off romhacking was
    Would recommend it that way

The most important question of all - Active mode or Wait mode?

Game is easy enough as it is, wait mode would make it a complete cakewalk.
