ok troony OP
>story
>in a videogame
>in a shmup of all genres
Radiant Silvergun has fully animated cutscenes and voiced dialogue from 4 characters that takes place before every level.
yeah that will not get annoying when grinding for a 1cc
>game has no story
>it has a story
>well it's a bad thing
yes, i never argued that it was good
stories don't belong in arcade games
dip your testicles in acid acgay.
It's Treasure, so it sucks.
>The story of Radiant Silvergun is told non-linearly through animated videos and scripted dialogue between stages.[1] In the year 2520, scientists on Earth have unearthed a giant crystal along with an ancient robot bearing the same serial number as another robot called "Creator" on the Tetra spaceship orbiting around Earth. The crystal creates a massive explosion, engulfing the Earth in a large explosion and killing all humans except for the remaining four on the spaceship. One year later, exhausted of supplies, they return to Earth in fighter jets known as Silverguns, fighting through hordes of enemies until they reach the crystal, which is referred to as “the Stone-Like”. After battling the Stone-Like and failing to destroy it, it brings the last two remaining pilots 100,000 years into the past, and tells them that it is the guardian of the Earth and destroyed humans in order to protect the planet, before destroying the last two humans in another explosion. 20 years later, still in the distant past, the Creator uses DNA from the pilots of the Silverguns to create clones and start humanity anew before the Creator finally breaks down for good, bringing the story into a loop.
What the frick did I just read?
Hey, thread, check out this newhomosexual who's never played Tyrian.
>caring about story in a shmup
Euroshmups are a joke
about story in a shmup
Yes Story in Shmup are awesome.
why would i play a game without story in it
its like eating food cause of what nutrients it has instead of how tasty and nice looking and feeling it is
its not how humans work
Wrong, here's the correct food analogy: it's like eating a delicious and nutritious meal that doesn't look pretty
Story is fluff, it's garnishing
No, it's like eating a 60$ burguer that is the perfect size for your hands and mouth, but the meat has no taste, there are no cheese, lettuce and the bum is flaky.
Also
This cover art gets more saturared everytime it's posted.
But the story makes the Shmup extra awesome because you get emotional investment
I can't get emotionally invested in shmup stories because they are always without fail shallow and unimmersive and only serve as subtext or justification for the gameplay. So I just tend to ignore the story for the most part and get on with the gameplay
>So I just tend to ignore the story for the most part and get on with the gameplay
But is so fun. You are saying that like is a bad thing
It's not a bad thing necessarily as long as I don't have to waste time skipping story shit every single run. But I'm not pretending that I get emotionally invested in fricking shmup stories
>But I'm not pretending that I get emotionally invested in fricking shmup stories
But I have notice that the most popular shmups have well done stories, it can't be a coincidence maybe is subconscious stuff and people Don't notice it
touhous have terrible stories
>touhous have terrible stories
I was talking about Gunbird and Esprade but Tohu is great too
The Touhou games stories and worldbuilding are good. They are schizokino based on esoteric japanese mythology and it's interpretations by a drunkard.
>most popular shmups have well done stories
Which ones? Touhou got popularized among secondaries thanks to its music first and foremost, not thanks to its story.
Let me give you an example: old shmups had this magic of telling stories with the gameplay and art-style/animations, this is something a lot of new Shmups can't replicate, with some exceptions like the masterpiece that is Zeroranger.
>ESP Ra De
God I fricking love this game so much
Story is like that little leaf they put on top of gourmet meals in fancy restaurants, it looks pretty but for the taste and nutrition it's irrelevant.
That makes 0 sense and the reasons Shmup are going to die, old shmups understand the importance of the story and new Shmups should learn too
Nta, it's not only story but the whole arcade design that needs to go.
Nobody wanna spend 20-30 in a 1.3hour game where the 'enjoyment' is autistic memorization to score super high(for whatever reason) or finish the game with one credit.
>Nobody wanna spend 20-30 in a 1.3hour game where the 'enjoyment' is autistic memorization to score super high(for whatever reason) or finish the game with one credit.
anon ARCADE games has been the most popular style of gaming for indie games for almost 5 years, what do you thing Jump King is?
>anon ARCADE games has been the most popular style of gaming for indie games for almost 5 years, what do you thing Jump King is?
I love arcade design too, but let's not kid ourselves pls. Take a look at all the stg released in the same timeframe, with the exception of 2-3 titles they all have no more than 200 reviews.
Take all the games shilled by shmups junkie and elec underground, how many of them get over 1k reviews?
because for some reason people dont understand that Jump King is basically an arcade game, people call it """"""rage game"""""" and for some reason that makes it different?????
Yes. They are called streamer bait games.
There is no shump that gathered that kind of success, with the exception of cuphead. But fanatics don't even count it as a shooter to begin with.
>Jump King has several checkpoint which are incredibly hard to fall below. Once you reach them you can essentially retry a stretch indefinitely
that is not true
>Yes. They are called streamer bait games
I dont understand this, there are a lot of games that have never try to be stream bait but because streamers play it is a streamer game?
>I dont understand this, there are a lot of games that have never try to be stream bait but because streamers play it is a streamer game?
Rage games, as a whole are stream bait. They are born with that in mind. Jump king is a rage game, like happy weels, qwop, only up etc.
We can descuss if and how rage games originates from arcade design, and that maybe old shmups were the rage games of the past, but that doesn't change that stg are a stale genre, and that almost all new attempts from indie devs had almost no success. That old kind of design is GONE.
>but that doesn't change that stg are a stale genre
this is the solution
If you want streamers to play your game you just have to pay one, and pay marketers to shill it on twitter. Add in some sexy safe horny b***h or something. A gay ship maybe. Streamers will play whatever you pay them to, and if it's a big streamer then all the little fish streamers will swim around his mouth like remora trying to get the scraps by playing it themselves for free.
Jump King has several checkpoint which are incredibly hard to fall below. Once you reach them you can essentially retry a stretch indefinitely, which feels closer to modern precision platformers than an arcade game.
Roguelites are probably the popular genre that holds closest to the arcade structure with ~30 min standalone runs that end after you frick up, but the heavy use of randomisation and the trend towards metaprogression muddy the comparison quite a bit.
I agree that shmups REALLY need some form of randomization but still having some memo patterns is part of the fun, it's like solving a puzzle.
Zeroranger
>ripoff a shitton of 80s anime

>those people tell me to shut the frick up when I burst in to say the game they love is shit because I personally don't like it
sorry you don't like Dodonpachi, maybe you are more of an Ikagura guy?
don't you know? shmups are the best genre to put a balls to the walls story that no one will really find out without reading a manual or understand.

I'm more concerned at how underrated dodonpachi 2 is, do people tend to skip it? it's pretty good
It has completely broken and laughable scoring. It was also farmed out to a no-name team at Capcom, iirc. It's about as skippable as they come; only play it if you've played every other DDP game and are still somehow hungry for more.
Nice bait, I'm very excited for the ShotTriggers port too.
It's pretty great that your life system is actually explained: your jet is in fact destroyed & the pilot is killed, and another comes along to pick up the robot who was doing all the heavy lifting & continue the mission.
Really makes Leinyan's ending even more fricked up.
This series is fricking dark for a shmup when it comes to the story.
>Really makes Leinyan's ending even more fricked up.
?
She was pretty much the reason the sequel happened. While Shotia died like a good girl, Exy went nuts from being exposed to the literal doomsday weapon's computers, so the robot girls were quarantined for what should've been forever. But Leinyan decided she was totally in love with the last pilot she flew with (who very well could've known her for only a couple minutes) and decided to haxor her way out of containment. And that's how the girls got remade as time-traveling city-stomping robots.
A total kick in the dick after the genuinely emotional ending Shotia had.
This is going to be console-only, isn't it?
>M2
Even being released for consoles only is enough reason for celebration.
What console? Also the previous celeste are worth a shot? Or just this one?

Game itself seems pretty wild with every life being one of the ships.
How you did it that fast? i fricking downloaded 1 file from uptobox and now i'm locked from another download for 2 hours and i still need 2 files.
I downloaded the TPBootstrapper from the download section of teknoparrot. The installer downloaded everything on its own, after that I unpacked the aleste rar and it was done. 10min in total, tops.
You shill your game but not the other shmup from agdg? Be polite and post them all from the dd pls.
my game it's a mix between castlevania and a shmup (ShmupVania), this is a vedeo from two demo days ago, last demo has more stuff.

Bruh i downloaded the game manually from the stupid french link. What a dumbass. I made it work anyway had to find some shitty way to go pass the uptobox shitty wait time. Got the game working guess i'll give it a shot.
Any tip for this Aleste game? i never played those ones before.

np
>Any tip for this Aleste game? i never played those ones before.
I've just did two coins worth of trying, can't say much about it. The general tip is to have both shoot buttons pressed, and you release the normal one (button 1) when you need to super shoot. But every ship has a different gimmick, so that tactic is shit for green, but great for blue, etc
Also it's all in jap, so we'll need a wiki to understand wtf the mechanics really are

>plotgays
Stop bumping threads created by the gays. There's a word you type in the Options field to prevent that from happening.
I think it's always interesting to read what stupid shit tourists and non-shmup players say about the genre, it's important to remind new devs what not to put in their game.
Why?
Don't forget
>you have to beat it twice in a row (without continues) to face the true final boss
For as many reasons there are to shit on people that only play weebabby's first shmup series (pic related), at least the games don't kick you in the nits after going against the angsty vampire and tell "Great! Now do it again. From the start."
Skill issue
Skill doesn't compensate for shit game design, you tryhard morons. I hated that shit in Ghosts 'n Goblins (even with infinite continues) and the simps excusing it, I'm reserving the same sentiment for this game and assblasted CAVE dwellers like you excusing it with "git gud".
After you get to FinalA's good ending with a team, you can job as mich as you like and the choice to go for Kaguya and FinalB is still there.
>Ghosts 'n Goblins
Complaining about a GODTIER game
I love that game too, but I ain't excusing such design moronation in it either. Back then, I would just complete a GnG loop, savestate at the beginning of the 2nd one, quit the game and when I got the itch to play it again years later, pick back up that save instead of starting fresh.
>I ain't excusing such design moronation in it either.
that is good design
Sounds like you're a shitter, reTHard
Considering the boss rush mode throws two TLB at you at once that's not even that bad.
Reminder that the latest Touhou game references DonDonPachi DaiOuJou.
How is this a reference albeit?
shinugayoi , EOP kun
why would you want to learn such a dogshit language?
Why do 5eyesBlack folk brag about only knowing english?
>shinu ga yoi
>die is good
huh?
Yes, Daioujou's back-of-the-box tagline is "Dying is good."
I'm far from fluent / still learning, but from what I've seen, "[blank] ga ii" isn't necessarily stating that "[blank] is good", and it can also be used to express a command or request (IE: [blank] is good, so you should do it.)
EG: the phrase "Miru ga ii!" might be read as "Behold!" or "Bear witness!" or some such thing, and "Kuru ga ii!" can be treated "Come at me!" or "Have at you!"
As such, I'd assume that "Shinu ga ii!" would be intended to mean "Go ahead and die!" or something equivalent, but I could easily be mistaken.
Yeah, I'm not fluent either, but afaik everything you said is correct, it's an informal phrasing that can be taken several ways. So it also works as a flippant phrase a bloodthirsty Reimu might utter before tearing into an overconfident foe in Touhou (Time to die!), while also being a clear nod at a classic shmup.
>at least the games don't kick you in the nits after going against the angsty vampire and tell "Great! Now do it again. From the start."
Nah, but it told me "lmao at your powerlevel(having used continues or played on Easy) you are never going to beat the final boss, so frick you, here's the credits."
>"lmao at your powerlevel(having used continues or played on Easy) you are never going to beat the final boss, so frick you, here's the credits."

That's literally what it is.
any raystorm fans?
I like it, though I prefer RayForce. If you happen to like RayCrisis' "don't let enemies get past you" thing, play Halley's Comet (or the Game Gear version, Halley Wars) where that concept originated.
Thanks for the rec
No prob. I originally played it on Game Gear when I was younger, and didn't even know it was based on an arcade game until I saw the cabinet at Galloping Ghost a few years ago.
Raystorm is amazing, I grew to like it more than its 2d predecessor. Crisis might be my favorite for the funky cyberpunk feel and weird scoring mechanics (I love the Encroachment stuff), but RayStorm is, in the true sense of the word, an epic shmup. 1cc'ing it is one of my more proud accomplishments in the genre.
I like storm and crisis because I played them on psx at the time. It's pure nostalgia for me, even if they are not the best games.
Also R-gray 1 is my all time favored ship.
They have some unfair moments but they tend to be overlooked because of the early 3d. Playing them heavily this past year I find they have a lot of depth and some God tier soundtracks and boss fights, which is what I want in a shmup.
ENTER
The actual best Dreamcast shmup.
Is that dodge pattern required or flexing? Right above the boss seems like a dead zone no?
The game is built around a grazing system, where if you graze enough bullets your ship gains exp and when you level up, you have a 1 second window of invuln. During this time you can run right into a pattern and level up as long as you can manage, allowing you to ride patterns like that.
It's a good excuse for the developer to throw lots of huge bullet walls and it feels good to run through them. It's tougher than it looks though because if you mis-time your window just a little bit you're dead.
Psyvariar is great. The steam port of the first two games (plus a Delta remake) is one of the best shmups on any platform.
Psyvariar 2 is also good but it is best on PS2 imo because of having more features than the Dreamcast original. The psy2 soundtrack is one of the greatest of all time, any genre.
>posting Eta, the best track
My nig.
This and the 1st game are insanely hard.
Yes you can just randomly 1cc them but to get to the True Route and True Final Boss you have to score perfectly and it's insanely hard to do so.
But besides that? Patterns are baby easy, and the hard ones are cheesed/abused by the main mechanic of the game making you invulnerable. Nothing much.
Fun game but not for me.
thoughts on Hellsinker and Zeroranger?
Hellsinker is superlatively autistic and I appreciate its commitment.
Zeroranger is a good hackjob of other shmups ive played but never reached the same heights.
>superlatively autistic
in what ways? What am I getting myself into here?
absolutely nuts mechanics and cryptic storyline that would make Nomura cream his pants
thankfully I don't give a shit about story in arcade shmups, but I look forward to these insane mechanics
>absolutely nuts mechanics
Unga bunga me minogame
me turn invincible bubble on, unga bunga me avoid the color green.
Wow. So complex.
To begin with you have 3 playable characters, 2 of which are paired with fairies called Mistletoes. Dead Liar and Fossil Maiden. Dead Liar has 2 different movement types for his Mistletoe and Fossil Maiden has one. The mistletoes work like options but can be manually controlled and have their firing behaviors changed. This is on top of each of the two characters innate move sets. Minogame, the third character, has no Mistletoe and has a relatively expanded move set. There is an an unlockable 4th character, Kagura, you acquire that has 4 different move sets. Each character and setting changes how you need to beat the game because their move sets are dependent on the sol and luna gauges which you use for firing and bombing. Accordingly there are granular options for movement, auto-bomb and extra life acquisition. Characters do not suffer collision damage generally speaking and can seal enemy firing patterns when they get in close range.
Moving onto level structure. The first three missions have "Lead" and "behind" variants that change enemy and stage layout. There are 8 stages in total but you can unlock "short mission" after reaching stage 8 I believe that will allow you to choose a truncated mode where you choose your stage progression, allowing you to skip some stages. There is a hidden gauge that when it runs out (you can make it run out quicker by performing poorly) that tkaes you to a hidden stage called The Shrine of Farewell. It is a boss rush that converts your score into tokens to boost The final boss has three phases and depending on what you do in the first phase determines what boss you face in the second phase.
Also the game has a lot of story in the manual, dialog and hidden sequences/bosses/unlockables. The game also has its own terminology for just about everything.
>manual
I only have the steam version
There's an HTML file in the 'instruction' folder in the main game file directory
Terra is the gauge that determines access to the Shrine of Farewell, and it is not hidden.
>Zeroranger
What a masterpiece, make me like Shmup again
Hellsinker is full autismo, really nice game.
ZeroRanger is a piece of art.
Both are amazing games
>ZeroRanger is a piece of art.
WHERE IS BLACK ONION???? THAT SHIT IS THE NEW DEVIL ENGINE DLC
daioujou has this weird and dark feeling to it that i really enjoy
I like the music.
its true that the music could be better; they didn't find out how to use all the pgm's sound channels till espgaluda, but doj's (and ketsui's) music is the opposite of bad
its not true that the game has no story, its just included in the ending and supplemental materials, which unfortunately lack translations. just taking in the atmosphere is better for a short, repetitive game of this kind anyway.
>its not true that the game has no story, its just included in the ending and supplemental materials, which unfortunately lack translations
I'm surprised no one has tried translating them.
/shmupg/ bait thread
I hate that DooDooPachinko and Ikarugay are touted as the very best of the best when it comes to shmups. I've had infinitely more fun playing Deathsmiles, ESP Ra.De, hell even the Flash version of Raiden X.
Agreed. DDP and Ikaruga's scoring systems are extremely unforgiving. Break your chain once and that's it. With most other CAVE games you can still feel like you're doing good even if you don't squeeze every last point out of any given run.
When is the M2 ShotTriggers port releasing?

As a teenager, I did not even know what Dodonpachi was called or what it is about, but the cover art is so "emoi" that it became a formative piece of media for me.
Stg friends, suggest me a game with fun scoring. Someting that can make me care about it.
My problem: I like shmups but I don't care for scoring. Even after reading the full extent of the jam, it still seems super autistic to me.
I try 1cc if I like a game a lot, I understand that kind of mastery. the only 'scoring' I cared so far was 100% shotdown in harmful park, because you can unlock a card for each level you complete.
There is a game with levels/bosses/loops hidden behind a certain score? Are them fun?

Can someone explain to me why this game, and its sequel have really sad true final boss themes?
Because it makes sense within the plot
In the 1st game you kill the 2nd game's final boss's child. The 2nd final boss goes mad from anger so it's sad killing her.
That said, in the 2nd game, the sad final boss theme is only in the Black Label version.
This is the actual final boss theme of the 2nd game.
>That said, in the 2nd game, the sad final boss theme is only in the Black Label version.
Yeah I was referring to the black label version.
>Can someone explain to me why this game, and its sequel have really sad true final boss themes?
BECAUSE THERE IS A STORY BECAUSE GREAT SHMUPS HAVE STORY
All you need in life is Eschatos
I'm going to start grinding it. It's fun, hope I can 100% it before the shmups sales
Tried playing it again after years and the game feels weird. i don't know if it's my computer or something but the game feels "slow" like it skips frames or something
2 more weeks.
Seriously, where is it. It's been so long and the devs seem to share more info about their new game that something ZeroRanger related
>the devs seem to share more info about their new game that something ZeroRanger related
I think it is pretty telling that the new game has intermittent advertisement posts on twitter and a planned release date for this year, while Black Onion gets absolutely nothing at all besides being joked about in a ZR patch note writeup. Which is to say, I would personally not expect it anytime soon.
Yeah, gotta wait till september to see if they release it. I know they will release it eventually.
Probably just wait after the sokoban game

my man
Revisited Crimzon Clover today and I forgot just how good that game feels to play.
Feeling like trying to get the Type I arcade original clear now, but I don't want to lose momentum on the Rolling Gunner TLB clear.
Let's share free shit to play, I recently discovered this cute little game https://www.freem.ne.jp/win/game/30844
My main issue with this game is that when you release the fire button all score items will rapidly fly toward you but they will disappear if you press the fire button again when they are mid-recovery, this is really fricking annoying especially because scoring gives you lives and bombs.
Also bullet visibility can be a little low sometimes.
Why isn't Mars Matrix in any of the Capcom Arcade collections.
Because only 50 people in the entire world play this game.
The frick is Mars Matrix?
extremely based game that chads play. Scoop up them bullets and reflect em back at the enemies
?t=352
Not the anon you were replying to, but thanks for that video anon.
Watching a bit made me better understand how I've been playing wrong.
Need to pick it back up and try to get gud
>Watching a bit made me better understand how I've been playing wrong.
sure
the hardest thing to learn in game is that you can hold the reflect button for different lengths, and your meter will charge accordingly (short reflect = short recharge etc). Survival calls for spamming the short reflect a lot, and it's hard to be used to that if you more or less play stuff like Takumi's Giga Wing, which is fixed length for the reflect button.
What said. Also, if you
want to git gud with scoring after getting the survival basics down, remember that you send bullets back in the opposite direction to how you're moving.
Caravan shooters are literally defined by a single stage / time attack. Enemies flooding the screen based on how quickly you kill them does not make something a caravan shooter. For example, killing the midway bosses in a Cave game (e.g. the tank halfway through stage 2 of Ketsui) more quickly opens the floodgates for more enemies to rush at you. Doesn't make it a caravan shooter.
I'm not gonna be a dick about it but please listen to logic.
also just general advice for getting gud at anything, get used to recording yourself and watching the playback. once you get over the initial feeling of cringe, you'll start seeing the shit you do wrong and know which areas to improve, and potentially find new things to try
2 questions:
Do you prefer playing as a cute girl or as a spaceship/aircraft?
Do you prefer horizontal scrolling or vertical scrolling?
>Do you prefer playing as a cute girl or as a spaceship/aircraft?
Both, though sometimes the ship is piloted by a girl like pic related for example.

Both.

>based in Osaka and their website and social media are all in japanese
https://bikkurisoftware.com/
Levels of weeaboo that should be illegal if these guys are western.
I know for a fact that they have western employees because one of its selling points was the game having people from the western shmup community in it.
It's funny how that thread still ended up in shmup discussion (for the most part) despite all the derailing attempts.
Spaceship
Both horizontal and vertical.
As long as I get feedback from the game as to who I am controlling (i.e., character reactions during game-play and presence in cut-scenes/story/dialog/etc.) then I don't mind playing as a ship or vehicle.
Generally vertical, though I do like Deathsmiles and Battle Mania style horizontal shooters.
>Do you prefer playing as a cute girl or as a spaceship/aircraft?
first, but i just prefer when your character is visible in general like in espgaluda/esprade
>Do you prefer horizontal scrolling or vertical scrolling?
vertical by a pretty large margin
Hyped for the M2 ShotTriggers version. Hope they make a sick as frick arrange mode for it.
How can you call yourself a shmup fan when you haven't played TCSTRIKERS?
soul
All Cave games are super overrated.
>All Cave games are super perfect.
ftfy
>bullet patterns that are just pure vomit
>endless slowdown
Yeah right.
yeah
patterns that are just pure vomit
This is only true for final bosses/TLBs
slowdown
Yeah that sucks, especially when it suddenly accelerates again.
Cave owns, b***h.
cave sucks
I said. Cave. Owns.
Bitch.
Post shmups that suck ass.
I didn't really like Graze Counter as a game (braindead easy imo), nor did I like it's obsession with making half the cast trannies who are cute anime girls uwu, but I wish the developer success.
If you like Mushihimesama Futari check out this very underappreciated official arrange album. Yoko Shimomura, Keiichi Okabe, and Yousuke Yasui are some contributors

I have come to realize I do not like shmups as a whole. I only like Cho Ren Sha.
Unless there are others like Cho Ren Sha?
What do you like about it that others Shump don't have?
Well, it's really easy for one thing.
>stressful
How so? I find it to be quite cathartic because of the consistently symmetrical enemy formations and impactful sound effects. You just get a real good sense that your shots are connecting. Obviously the music is kick-ass too.
There's also nothing that makes me cum harder than getting all three powerups at once.
>hellsinker
I distinctly and decisively remember hating that one.
You don't like shmups but you like one of the most stressful ones?
play hellsinker
What do you like exactly about Chorensha? If you are searching for a videogame with a similiar soundtrack then i am afraid there are none, it has a very distinct sound, there is nothing like it even on the X68000. As a game in general maybe try Batsugun, its the game that probably inspired it the most.
>Batsugun
I'll give it a shot, thanks.
zero ranger was explicitly inspired by it iirc
There are TONS of games like Cho Ren Sha
If you like that one you'd likely enjoy more of the games in the gnere then not
My real question is, what games that you've played that you _don't_ like
I already mentioned one game I didn't like in this post here
(I guess people didn't see it).
I didn't like Deathsmiles or Mushihimesama very much. Aleste games were kind of boring, very monotonous. Hated Nexzr too. Summer Carnival Recca was an insane mess to me. I don't see how anyone could like that one. I played Burunyanman for some reason. Funny game. Have no desire to beat it.
As for some I actually kind of enjoyed but not enough to 1cc: Andro Dunos 2 was cool and Dragon Spirit was cool too (mostly because of the music).
There are definitely a ton I'm forgetting. This is just a rough approximation of a few that popped into mind.
So wait, you DO like more then just the one game for the genre unlike your post stated?
Come on man. You're yanking my chain.
Also, Cho Rin Sha is heavily inspired by late Topalan games, and by grace it's decedents (mostly Cave). Take that as you will.
Well, I wouldn't really say "kind of enjoy" means I actually liked it. That's what I intended in my post, anyway. It's more like "I guess those two were okay I guess". I only tried them once and have no desire to go back to them.
>Cho Rin Sha is heavily inspired by late Topalan game
Someone recommended Batsugun earlier. I'll have to definitely try it out now.
>I played Burunyanman for some reason.
I wonder what that reason was. Truly a mystery.
Can someone upload that game? I searched for it last time it was mentioned, but all links are ded
it's on nyaa
>Netherlands flag
huh?
The only zeroranger I want to play are Mido's breasts
Game name?
东东不死传说
How do I get into and git gud at SHUMPs
Unironically, just play them. I remember I played DU2 in intervals of 30 minutes for a week to get the hardest difficulty 1cc (it was legendary I believe?) and the 1 trillion points achievement. It felt great
You start with the classics (and probably stick with them since they are the best ones), else you end up becoming a homosexual that likes shit like Ikaruga and euroshmups.
You mean start with the classics like Gradius and ignore trannmaku garbage right?
Kinda crazy for this obscure game have a thread like this, it got a re-release?
i guess shmup really keeps itself alive.
>it got a re-release?
Not yet, M2 (by far the best porting studio in the industry) will release a enhanced port late this year though.
I am hoping early-october they'll release the port.
Posting anon's game:
I have never touched a single shmup in my life and never will but I recognize OP album cover. Everything from that cave dev is consistently god tier, the schoolgirl one is my favorite videogame soundtrack of all time, no competition.
>this dev is god tier but i never played one of their games
Average cave fan
Reading comprehension, acquire it.
og soundtrack sucks, this game needs BL to be listenable.
My hot take: Futari is cave best game
DOJ is incredibly ugly on anything but a CRT
>radiant silvergun "player" pretends to play shmups
I never hear much talk about the Espgaluda games. Are they not regarded as highly as DDP, Mushi, and Deathsmiles for any particular reason?
For me the music, aesthetics, stage design, and awakening mechanic all make for one of my favorite shmup runs.
I only played 2 and it makes me feel stupid, I don't know what the game wants me to do.
Also I think the series has certain... peculiarities that would make it hard to discuss on this board.
>same artist as the one for Kid Icarus Uprising and Order of Ecclesia
based
Played the first one, it's damn fun. Love how scoring works in that game. Kakusei's a neat little mechanic. Helped me understand myself and who I am a bit more. Also had that classic early 2000s trance soundtrack going on which is great
>Helped me understand myself and who I am a bit more.
>Helped me understand myself and who I am a bit more
>Are they not regarded as highly as DDP
They're highly regarded, they just never came out in the US on any platform so there is just less people that have played them and know them is all
For what little it's worth, Espgaluda 2 did come out on mobile in the US back in like 2013 or something. I remember having it and Deathsmiles on Android until they suddenly stopped working forever later that year. I kinda liked the Deathsmiles one for what it was.
I picked up CAVE's gacha game a couple months after it launched, now it's on its 8th year. I don't really play it actively anymore but I do pay attention to whenever they do collab events with actual CAVE games. Speaking of, an Espgaluda 2 collab just ended yesterday in that game. Earlier this year, they'd also done a Ketsui collab too.
No I've been loving 2, the ost is incredible
But I'll never beat it.. it get insane even with the bullet time mechanic
I wish more games had soundtracks as good as CAVE games.
I'd care about story in a videogame if it was a visual novel or something close to that, shmups are as far off from those as a genre can get and i couldn't give a frick about why you are a spaceship fighting UFOs
>crying about story in vidya
>>>/tv
go there moron
>Ganker
>story
I watch movies for cinematography, not for "plots" (that's for books) or "acting" (that's for theater plays)
The best song form Mushihime sama
>Verification not required.
I love the adventure feel of the 1.5 version of this theme.
My fav is:
Man this game's fanbase is either european disco music fans or trannies.
How do I git gud at shump games?
You need to be talented or autistic. If you are neither, don't even bother.
A frickton of practice.
And the willpower to not stop the moment you die once. So yeah, you can be TOO autistic for shmups.
By playing a lot. I'm being serious. You got to have routes in order to keep your survival easy and risk-free, know the location where the enemies spawn, learn how to stream, always use your bombs and not let them go to waste.
Once you put like 50 hours, you'll possibly get a clear. If not, keep on trying.
play them
post shmup content that’s lived rent free in your head for over a decade
starting with the legend
Go play Mars Matrix
Play the PS2 Silpheed game. I think it's pretty good.
I already did.
That stage 4 boss can suck my nutsack. Or was it stage 3? I can't remember. The one that takes over an ally ship and does that dumb attack where it tries to crash into you.
On what controller do you play shmups? Is an arcade stick much better than a PC keyboard?
Play what is comfortable for YOU.
I don't know why this is such a bizarre concept for people to accept.
Saturn.
>parody series is better than the series that it mocks
This thread motivated me into playing Mushihimesama and I finally 1cc it in the original difficulty.
Yes, I suck at shmups.
We all gotta start somewhere. It took me a lot to get the Arrange 1cc in Mushi.
Haven't tried to 1cc Ultra yet
Do mainline KH games count as shump?
kh2 gummi ship levels were the best dont know what the frick they were thinking in 3
My head canon is that all Cave games are interconnected
it started with Pink Sweets, then Ibara, to Espagaluda then to Progear, then to Akai Katana then to Esprade, to Ketsui, then to Dodonpachi series, and in the end, the earth is destroyed, and then earth is healing, then we got to Mushihimesama.
Deathsmiles is in another dimension so its not connected, and I dont know where to put Muchi Muchi Pork
This sounds cool. It would be great but there are no hints of it whatsoever
>My head canon is that all Cave games are interconnected
It's not even a headcanon, the Deathsmiles gacha spin-off confirms they all exist in the same universe.
>gacha
I will NEVER consider anything from a gacha as canon
Evac literally made the fricking robot bee. It's canon.
Besides Ikagaru and Radiant Silvergun, what are the coolest sci fi shmups? Just recently got into the genre and i really love those games so far.
Tresure shumps are very different from the rest of the genre so you're not going to find many others like them. But if you like Radiant Silvergun particularly, check out Hell Sinker on PC.
I'd say R-Type but I'm very, very biased towards biomechanical stuff.
The RaySeries (RayForce, RayStorm, RayCrisis) are worth checking out. RayForce's 2D effects are worth the price of admission on their own.
Thunderforce 4&V
Ketsui
Einhander
Esprade
Espgaluda 1 & 2
R-Type III, Delta, & Final
Gradius Gaiden & V
Metal Black
Xexex
Darius Gaiden, G-Darius, & Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours
And while they're rail shooters and not shmups, Sin and Punishment 1 & 2. First one has a mid-apocalyptic theme and aesthetic going on, 2 is hard sci-fi.
>Arkanoid, Bubble Bobble, Puzzle Bobble, Operation Wolf, Ninja Warriors and Pocky and Rocky got new games
New Darius when
Here's your new Darius.
My problem is that she doesn't even look like she is inspired by any of the Darius games' cephalopod bosses... Octopus, Grand Octopus (lol), Devil Whip, Neon Light Illusion, Titanic Lance, Eight Foot Umbrella....... just generic tentacle (hee hee not like that baka hentai!) girl.
Never, sadly.
I wish Dariusburst was developed by Taito.
I wish DariusBurst CS wasn't such a lame game.
It feels all procedurally generated. Its such an insane downgrade over Guiden and G.
Its the only shmup I've bought that I didn't even bother to at least credit feed to completion.
It's what happens when you give a classic series to the developers of Patapon. Taito should've hired G-Rev since it was composed of their former staff instead of hiring a studio that focused on rhythm games.
Thats a shame.
Patapon is a good game even, but I guess the devs were just out of their comfort zone working on a genre they don't specialize in.
>Taito should've hired G-Rev
If only...
I SAID!!!
Here's your new Darius! Be happy.
Does she have a cannon in her mouth as a weak point?
I hope you like gacha
I actually do unfortunately.
Oh.
You'll probably like this one then.
Downloading right now.
Now's actually a pretty good time to start because they're giving away 400 gacha pulls over the course of a month or so.
Also the current event is Street Fighter and you get a free Ryu from it. Also Bison got pranked, pic related.
Here's my player code if you wanna be friends:
220426601
It's a decent game. As far as gacha go, anyway.
>FemBison
What the frick
Alright, just got done doing the tutorial. Game's is fine, I guess. I'm still getting the hang of things despite not able to read or speak Japanese.
>400 pulls
And I thought Gothic wa Mahou Otome's 80 pulls was good. Saving up those pulls for the Darius girls. I am hoping they're really good.
Do you play other gacha games or is this the only gacha game you play?
Nice.
>not able to read or speak Japanese
Eh...? I assumed you could. Besides missing out on the funny story, this is going to be really hard to play without being able to read. I don't think there are any English tutorials at all.
I can answer specific questions that you have in regards to the mechanics or story now if you want. I don't think I'd be willing to write up an entire guide or anything though.
Oh also there's a desktop client if you prefer to play on PC.
>Saving up those pulls for the Darius girls
The free pulls you get are in ticket form, meaning that you can only use them on a specific banner. Luckily the 3 star Darius girl is featured on the banner. There's no point in saving the tickets, just use them now. The banner is the 5th one from the top.
>Do you play other gacha games
I like Project Sekai, Starlight Stage, and Genshin. Used to play the Touhou rhythm game one but that died.
You?
I probably should have attached an image.
It's this one. You get there from the option I have highlighted.
Is there anyone who actually likes Xevious? I refuse to believe.
Xevious is a cute game.
youre moms cute
Where's Great Thing?
I will play it if there's a Golden Ogre girl.
Don't forget the stronger recolor of Golden Ogre, known as Storm Causer. What a fricking upgrade going from first boss to final boss.
Alice Gear Shmup when?
You want something closer than that?
%3D
Either that or a strike witches shmup (That is good pls).
That's a nice collab
>New Darius when
I'd wonder what kind of fish they'd use for bosses this time, or how would a certain whale frick up players as one of the inevitable final bosses.
>pick up RSG
>you can frick yourself over for not playing perfectly for the first half of the game
gee, cool game. No wonder people dicksuck Ikaruga way more than this
Shit tastes
i miss when enemy bullets were locked into 8/16 directions and devs didn't fill the screen with them to try to overcompensate for their inability to use walls properly
Well, time to tryhard shmups again. Thanks for the motivation
what is the deal with the cover
it's edgekino
its cool but does it actually represent the game?
yes you will crash your ship in DOJ all the fricking time
i havent crashed once. i downloaded the latest version of the emulator at the time earlier this month. i did have to go into settings to change something so the screen wasnt black though, ill see if i can find what i changed
Change the line "gpu_allow_invalid_fetch_constants" from false to true if you havent already
Yeah, I knew that much, but thanks. Guess I'll try another build. It might be because I had to change the apu_max_queued_frames value to eliminate the audio latency in Futari and it doesn't play nice with SDOJ. Since this emulator STILL doesn't support per game settings I guess I'll just keep a separate folder for it.
It had a dead pilot (player) so yes.
see
Is there a shmup where you fight cosmic horrors?
The only one I can think of is Jishou no Chihei Mendako/The Flying Pancake Octopus in Blackhole. It has some weird as shit looking bosses
There are probably more games out there
I just wanna say shmups centered around getting the highest score are unbelievably lame and don't deserve to exist in the year of our lord 2023. I absolutely refuse to play certain games if the only argument as to why it's good is that the "scoring system is good".
I mean, scoring is pretty much the only way to measure skill at the highest level in this genre. You can't speedrun, not a whole lot of games have systems that enable things like a low level run and no hit is what is expected anyway. Might as well make the scoring have some depth.
Most games left scoring behind when they evolved from arcades. Shmups should've done the same because realistically it doesn't matter what you get. There should be more emphasis on story, the art, multiple stages, maybe some money system like Jamestown idk. Just getting bigger and bigger number each time is not compelling in the slightest and a strong reason why this genre is so niche.
fighting games have never done any of those well on top of being a dogshit genre and yet they still survived to this day. shmups died because theyre too hard for average joes and they arent multiplayer
>they arent multiplayer
>Just getting bigger and bigger number each time is not compelling in the slightest
For you, maybe.
>>Just getting bigger and bigger number each time is not compelling in the slightest
man where the frick did i say that? i play shmups for score
Sorry, see
>i play shmups for score
You're good in my book.
Sorry, see Sorry, see
Shit, that 2nd greentext was meant for
Honestly, if shmups abandoned scoring systems, literally everyone would drop them altogether; they'd still be too hard for the average joe, and without scoring, the current audience wouldn't have a reason to play.
Fighting games usually have 20-50 playable characters, online multiplayer, an engrossing story and gameplay that gets better the more you learn.
Shmups usually have 1-4 playable characters, no online multiplayer outside of rankings, barely an story at all and gameplay that amounts to "hold autofire and do figure 8's".
The ONLY 2 shmups to actually break the mold a bit these past 20 years are fricking 2hu and goddamn Undertale. It's embarrassing to be a shmup fan.
>fighting games
>an engrossing story
fighting games genuinely have some of the worst story's in games. trying to follow one of them is like trying to follow a 4kids dub but you miss saturdays every now and then. there's no rhyme, reason, or consistency. even mario games have more comprehensible writing.
>There should be more emphasis on story
why the frick does everyone hate this game? i tried the eXa version in an arcade and it was cool, and now im learning it in Xenia and its really fricking fun. is it seriously just because it has anime girls and a talking operator?
Yeah, probably. But it's worth noting DFK and SDOJ by extension are unlike their predecessors since there's a greater focus on bullet cancelling, so that difference in gameplay style draws some ire too. Also, do you also have a tendency to crash in menus while playing in Xenia? I'm wondering if it's just the build I'm using but the latest version of Canary I use to play Futari seems to have some complications when playing SDOJ.
I don't hate the game but I don't like the gameplay too much compare to DaiFukkatsu and DaiOuJou plus the game has only 1 loop which CAVE decided to make the game extremely difficult
>anime girls and a talking operator
I don't mind them. Although the moe crap is a turn off for me. I'm not much of an anime guy. OST is good though.
I bought the limited edition of this(not super limited, too expensive even preowned). It is fricking great, playing with the swimsuits is a challenge even on easiest difficulty.
It kind of looks like shit to me. I actually like the art and the girls, I mean the game itself, the sprites and background looks terrible to me for some reason. DDP is kind of cancer to play since Resurrection.
Nothing to do with the girls and at least they're just characters and they are cute, it's resurrection that's kind of went full moron
>it's resurrection that's kind of went full moron
The only thing Resurrection did right was have the entire game balanced around your starting weaponry, no having to risk life and limb chasing after power-up items.
Black Label soundtrack was dope.
better than DFK imo but at the same time also feels like they put less effort into it. Still a good game
I miss Milestone.
I know they were never popular, but I found their games charming.
Radirgy has such a cool and indescriptible aura around it. Like the game is really far from perfection but it has a "something", a "uniqueness" to it that it's hard to put it into words
Their visual styling is really distinct and memorable, even to this day I can still tell what a game like Illvelo looks live, even if I never got to play it. Of course, you can't forget their music either.
Yeah, you're right. The music and the visuals make it unique. Like really distinctive.
Radirgy is still alive at least.
These games are hard
>bad music
Actually have a nice day
i've only played one donpachi game (i was bored on fightcade) but i instantly recognized this art and i love the soundtrack to these games even if the story is insanely dumb
wanna play some games on fightcade with me?
sdoj is so hard breh
>prefer fast ships with straight shots
>do absolutely terrible unless i'm playing slow ships with wide shots
Ships with wide shot does the job with those annoying zako rush.
All tranmaku is slop. touhou and most of CAVE is so mediocre and so overrated.
Check out some great classic shmups like Sengoku Ace, In The Hunt, Batsugun, 1944, OutZone, Daisenpuu, Batrider, Gunbird, Darius Gaiden, RayForce, Hishouzame, Gradius 2, etc.
Hishouzame fricking sucks.
post clears shitter
NTA but Flying Shark is one of the easiest clears ever.
>playing the pozzed western version
>considers the first loop with misses a """clear""" of a multi-loop endurance game
shut the frick up shitter
I said clears, in general not clears of a single game you moron.
It helped contribute to the cancer, but it's still a great game. 1944 is even more of a bullet hell, but it actually has good design principles. CAVE games and Touhou are shit for many reasons beyond just having a lot of bullets.
You're balding
>playing the pozzed western version
I played the nip version from the M2 release.
>considers the first loop with misses a """clear""" of a multi-loop endurance game
Anon I'm not playing a 15 minutes long game for 8 hours just for bragging rights in mongolian doll making website. I don't think it even gets harder after the 3rd loop.
>dude I'm not playing a 20 minute shmup for hours
>plays 10,000 hours of fortnite and TF2 doing the exact same shit every match
why are you zoomer morons like this?
>Batsugun
>Better than any CAVE game
Just admit that you like games that are piss easy to no-miss sickgrab and move on.
post clears shitter
and yes, DonPachi is CAVE's only good game before they went full moron into tranmaku
I cleared Batsugun original and Special, didn't record the replays but I do have screenshots. I think the game is good but I wouldn't say it's better than any CAVE game.
>DonPachi only good game
you liked DoDonPachi too but don't want to admit it anon.
I would say DDP is the last game they actually put any effort into, yes.
>he doesn't like caravan shooters
Opinion discarded.
Dangun isn't a caravan shooter you stupid fricking newbie moron
It is, moron. It keeps reseting spawns as you kill enemies instead of having static patterns.
that's not what defines a caravan shooter moron
yo mommas a caravan shooter
why would you post clears of a game you don't like
you know what, go frick yourself, you're one of those schizos that shit up the /vr/ threads probably

Those homosexuals finally got tired of posting about nonsense drama from random Discords so the thread is dead for the time being. It'll likely be back for a little bit later though.

Will any other ship/flying magical girl ever match her?
no
still waiting for the first person to post a clear or score in any of these threads, and no touhou doesn't count
Be the change you want to see.
i only played touhou because i enjoy grazing for score and posted my mid scores in their threads a long time ago. never seen anyone post even a 1-ALL here lol
>I only played touhou because i enjoy grazing for score
This is the exact reason why I don't want to get into Touhou scoring. EoSD is my favorite of the bunch and I'd like to get a good score in it someday but grazebased score is fricking cringe, wish more Touhou games were like MoF in terms of scoring systems.
>MoF scoring
cringe. the latest touhou games don't have graze btw
MoF scoring owns, more Touhou games need to include chaining instead of grazeshit. Having to no-miss isn't even that bad of a requirement when the game is easy enough to no-miss already.
Also
>The latest Touhou games
Why would anyone play a game past UFO?
mof scoring is straightforward with very unfun execution and not very interesting to me. maybe if the piv didn't cap so early there could be more innovation in the routing, but i don't want to bother optimizing runs for literally a million points or restart because i mistimed a point item grab at the PoC or something
it's one of those games where i'd rather watch a TAS to find out the real upper limit. i wouldn't be surprised if it couldn't crack 2.25b. there's a run for extra but not lunatic afaik
>Why would anyone play a game past UFO?
because lolk and hsifs exist 😉
There was one posted in the last 1CC thread:
Based off my experience so far, I would rate my hardest clears as

Better to have the thread die than artificially extending it forever when you run out of things to discuss like the 2hugays.
