Civ bread
What's your favourite civilization game? Mine is CivIII. II has the best wonder videos, but the gameplay sucks and enemies can go through your entire stack of army if only one of your units is defeated. Otherwise, great games.

Civ ii is my favorite because of nostalgi. I played countless hours of civ 2 and the endless amounts of fan made content
Alpha Centauri.
Also I need to replay Rise of Nations, the unofficial real-time Civ spin-off.
My whole life i preferred 3 but I recently moved in to 4 and genuinely now feel like most changes are improvements. I mostly hate the way artillery works and not being able to stack your units into an army.
I've played a lot of III, IV, V, and VI, and I have to say V is the best one if you play with the Vox Populi mod, sorry. Without mods it's 4 though.
Civ V by a long stretch
Not played voxpop, I need to download it.
Call To Power 2
I really like the combat. allows you to stack units but they all fight simultaneously and in-formation, which further differentiates unit roles.
i think i bought it on GOGs. i probably should play it since it feels like in between Civ and Alpha Centauri in terms of Sci-fi-ness.
Spyroviper's port is a great way to run it on a modern system:

Coincidentally I just started playing Civilization Revolution (DS version). It seems respectably good so far. Nevermind that though, since it's not "retro" and isn't as good as the main games.
Back in the day my favorite Civilization was always the most recent one. I wasn't hardcore enough to react in any way other than excitement about the cool new graphics and cool new features. I mean it's always still Civilization, so it's always great. Oh except... I did feel a bit turned off by the move to 3D graphics in the fourth game. (I would later get used to that.)
Today my favorite is IV, especially with certain mods. I haven't played beyond that, other than Civ Rev of course. The other side game I've tried is Alpha Centauri, which rubbed me the wrong way at first but later I tried it again more seriously and found it to be great, albeit too easy even on high difficulty settings since the AI seems to be a bunch of complete idiots.
4 for me but I like all of the game once their finished aka all the expansions are out.
You know what's a neat game, Age of Empires 2 on DS, it's a turn based strategy game and it's pretty good.
I spent the most time with the first game, probably because it's so easy to install onto all builds. I have played later ones up to 4/Revolution as well, and they're all addicting in the same way. Never really decided if one is greater than another, as once I start, the earth has made pretty much a full rotation before I notice.
First game had nice box art.
It is very classy and stands the test of time.
My first computer was a 286-12, so that era had all the best games for me. Thanks to Civ, MoM, MoO, M:tG, etc. I did think Microprose was a master of the craft in making games.
You've expressed a feeling I share too that I was unable to put into words. The game did allow for a lot of freedom to just hang around and enjoy the spontaneity rather than what does feel like specific phases.
>I spent the most time with the first game
Same. I only had a 386 in the late 90s and it was the game that made me skip tons of homework, spending afternoons and nights playing.
The first game got so much of its game design right that it's one of the games I respect most.
Can someone explain to me why people won't work the damn farm tile when there's a famine coming in 5 turns? like dude i understand that you want Elvis but it seems to me that it should be of lower priority than the city potentially getting a taste of the "1840's Ireland".
Would you really want to live without enough Elvises around? Some things are more important than mere survival.
I remember corruption mechanics in 3 really made getting the proper dumbbell shaped empire around your capital and forbidden city the key to winning
Well, I just won my first ever game of Civilization Revolution. Since it's not "retro", I have no comment on it.
I liked the older games where I could play for hours building my civilization the way I want, but the later entries they made it even more and more like a fast paced board game focusing on meta strategies and game balance.
I have played way too much Civ 3, so I am very fond of that one. Alpha Centauri is the best while not being strictly Civilization.
Civ 4 but that's not retros unless WinXP is retro platform now.
>Windows XP was released by Microsoft on October 25, 2001, replacing Windows 2000 and Windows ME.
>Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001
III was the best, II has the most charm.
