In Doom could you change your weapons with those things? Only thing I can think of that would be cool to have for

you could and in Wolf 3D you could show the map or save your game(pc didn't have a map)
some games used overlays as the pad was designed for it just like some other consoles before it.

This is pretty cool imo, I don't like those little pill shaped buttons, looks like something on a TV remote or alarm clock, but it gives you some of the functionality you get with a PC keyboard without needing a full keyboard.

You could potentially use it for text input like a phone, which is kino.

Yeah but you'd still be playing it on a console with shittier performance that has a controller that doesn't allow you to strafe easily

Clickable thumbsticks are fine but holding the thumbstick down and moving it at the same time should be a crime

They contribute to wearing down the base of the sticks and causing controller drift so yes I agree.

Not retro but seriously frick every game that has you click the left stick to run.

I hate this too. Also to crawl. If I tap it to toggle crawling that's bearable but frick holding it down for any reason. Honestly I'm with OP, it's a stupid idea that can only be done wrong and never truly right

I used to hate it, but after playing a game that required it, I got used to it. Only for games that have a stamina meter though, otherwise, we need to go back to analogue sticks being fricking analogue, and just have run being holding it all the way in one direction.

        >and just have run being holding the analog stick all the way in one direction
Why the hell did they even stop doing this, anyway?

Meh, they're useful in games with otherwise cramped control schemes. They make a good map or menu button. You really have to know what you're doing if you want to make proper use of stick buttons for action gameplay though, using the stick buttons for shit like sprinting or crouching is fricking aids. I think COD uses it as your knife button on consoles and I remember hating it when my normalgay friends kept trying to get me to play COD with them.

Well how else am I gonna sprint around like I'm sanic while I melee with my knife for insta kills?

They kind of suck to use for anything that's actually necessary during action, and I'd maybe just rather they weren't a thing, so developers weren't constantly tempted to use them that way.
The correct use is something inconsequential like bringing up the mini map, or turning on a flashlight.
