it seems the "boring side quests" point is divisive as well. IGN loved the side quests and thought they brought a whole bunch of character into the world. meanwhile others thought they boring. it seems it speaks more to worldbuilding appreciators rather than rewards/gameplay appreciators.
That's what FFXIV sidequests were so it doesn't surprise me. They're all "boring" elaboration on worldbuilding rather than something with a really tangible reward with maybe five or so sidequest lines per X.0 patch having a meaningful story to them.

I believe the boring sidequests part for sure, and the easy combat since the game is made for FF fans and "journalists" IE subhumans who think easy games like Dark Souls 1 are borderline impossible, and they've said that the first playthrough is basically easy mode and NG+ is for gameplay and I know for a fact that no "journalist" has even begun NG+ in spite of that.
You can make the combat easy by using the accessories. But if you want to play the game, you just don't use them.
Yeah I know about that (and I have no doubt that the ones complaining about the difficulty equipped them all because "journalists" have an IQ lower than a pidgeon) but I remember an interview saying that the game's real difficulty is unlocked in NG+ as well (which makes sense since it's DMC inspired)

It's true. Elden Ring is structured in such a way that if you want to replay it, you have to use a guide to figure out which dungeons you should do to complete your character build while skipping the rest of the game because otherwise your playthrough is going to last 100 hours and a Souls game shouldn't take more than 30.
The complaint is more that the RPG mechanics are too shallow for such a long game, so it's like playing a DMC game where every playthrough lasts 40 hours which I can see getting tiring.
What is Kingdom hearts

Kingdom hearts isn't really short and the rpg mechanics are not very in depth at all. You apply a weapon and accessories and maybe some skills. 30 hours on the main story for all 3 and like 70 to 100%.
KH games are 30-40 hours vanilla, FF16 is apparently 40-60
I've actually beaten the game on FF mode. Unironically, game is very good but even on FF mode it's not hard. It feels like they overhyped it with stuff like "it makes Dante must Die look easy". Base difficulty is like Base KH difficulty (AKA easy as shit, enemies barely attack). FF mode is good but still easier than KH criticals. Should have been there from the start.
Spectacle is insane. But boss design is worse than KH 3 RM or DMC V. Music is GOAT tier though.
Sidequests are shit, legitimately. They feel like they imported MMO design and rewards are TRASH.
Story and villains are trash, don't play it for them. Story shits itself in the final act, but is generally good/okay before outside of pacing.
Clive and Jill are fine but a little too plain. Kinda like Noah and Mio from Xenoblade 3 actually. Clive is a generic shonen protag outside of the villain fights.
Overall, it's an 8.5/10. Idc if you believe me or not, play the game yourself to find out. It's at least worth the money.

The games are all 30 hours on average to beat if you're just trying to roll credits. 70+ to 100%. And that's on standard mode.
I'm viewing this in the lens of an action game where I can just have all the time in world to build my repertoire of moves and have fun fighting more things.
I get the ER point and I even thought it would be a hassle going through all the world caves/mines/graves again but as it turns out, I went into each of them anyway because they were filled with things for me to kill and get souls out of it.
That's the thing, from what I've been hearing the game is so long that your new moves are spaced a lot further apart than a typical crazy action game, hence the "too long" complaints, amd that the RPG mechanics aren't in depth enough to fill the void in between.
Considering how much I loved the combat mechanics, I think I'll be willing to take that downside.
Yeah the website that made the complaint (RPGsite) said it wasn't a dealbreaker it just negatively affected the pacing (in combination with the sidequests which seem to be more laid back worldbuilding than story based which they also didn't like). Their only other major complaint was performance problems which is natural for a console game.
Games can be too long if the content isn't worth playing, not saying that it's the case here but that's true. I think Alien Isolation is the textbook example of a horror game (a genre known for ordinarily short games) being stretched out way too long and losing steam partway through it all.
The other complaint is that, in addition to being long for an action game, the sidequests and RPG elements just don't mesh with the action focus and get in the way, and make you just want to skip to the main story setpieces.

I'll say the story is bad, but not for any of the reasons these moron game journos say.
Simply put, Ultima is not a strong villain. It's essentially a lesser version of Garland from FF9, an invader from another world manipulating humanity in order to resurrect it's own race. But in FF9 we at least see more of the Terrans and the story is complicated by Zidane and his "sister" being so closely related to them, and ultimately Garland's place as antagonist is usurped by Kuja destroying everything.
This is the issue, Ultima has no real charisma as a villain. Kuja was a gigantic butthole to the player all throughout the game, so him as the antagonist holds more weight. Ultima really is just fighting ayylmao god, you don't feel anything whatsoever for his race or even antipathy against him other than for the simplicity of his evil.
Anabella should have been the final boss somehow, hijacking the ayys' entire plan to become a god herself. The player would feel that, at least. Everybody loves beating up evil moms.
It's kinda funny how both XIV and XVI pulled the "Ultima is an alien" card.
Ultima comes from "another world" in XIV which people are misinterpreting as "from space." It's more like the Underworld, which lines up with Ultima and the Lucavi in Tactics being straight up demons.
I think the implication is that Ultima in XIV is some lovecraftian cosmic horror that gained sentience once it crash landed on the Source.
