Yeah Cathedral was pretty rough, but there's some good shit near the end of it that got me through the pain. There's a new area that unlocks with a great blood code when you beat it, and right before you unlock the new area, there's a boss that gives one of the best weapons in the game.
Cathedral is probably the worst area despite how pretty it is, it's a maze and everything looks the exact same, but that also means that basically every other area is better if you can slog through it.
Code Vein is stylish as frick in a chuuni sense and has loads of cool environments and endearing NPCs. Frick the labyrinth though. Why are you comparing this game to Dark Souls? You have DS1-3, Bloodborne, Elden Ring and Demon Souls so shut up.
Honestly this game has some good points. The ability inheritance system and general equipment changing your stats made it so you are rewarded for preparing for the encounter or environment before you. The boss design is abject trash though.
What really kills the game however is the total lack of feedback, you are swinging cardboard tubes around. Completely embarrassing on this front. Also, playing the game solo is harder than anything in ER, but that’s not a good thing. Shit is just anti-fun. It’s like a 7/10 game with 3/10 parts

why do people unnironically defend DaS like the second coming of christ? they have decent gameplay, but they're pretty mediocre in most other aspects. Given, gameplay is the most important aspect but even that isn't that great in souls games. it's just roll, hit boss, roll, hit boss, until it dies. at least CV has some vaguely interesting storyline with drama and and characters. Dark souls, on the other hand is ironically full of soulless NPCs. Other than maye sigmeyer
well to be honest I think even fans of the game like me will openly admit the white cathedral does overstay its welcome. I guess that being a huge maze was the point there, but it would have been better to make something like that a post-game DLC or something.
That being said, I did 100% the game and on subsequent playthroughs i just breezed through. I did genuinely find CV more enjoyable than the DaS games (which I also got 100% on), if only because the game didn't feel so empty, and the characters were nice. Although I will also admit that the whole point of DaS games is to be as depressing as possible, and they do a phenomenal job on that front.
The gameplay is meh. I was in it for Anime Friendship Souls mixed together with the EDGE aesthetics.
The cute girls and making your own edgy OC are nice bonuses.
Because in GE, they have to come up with a new worldwide cataclysm for each game to explain why the Aragami are still around and getting stronger despite humanity's efforts to eradicate them. It turns the hopeful tone of CV's ending into a very somber one

Dark Souls is more than just the core mechanic. And as a bonus everyone who copies it doesn't bother with the pvp invasions, the messages and sometimes even multiplayer.
Was driving my alcoholic cousin to work when he told me this game fricking sucked so on one hand he’s alcoholic and has poor judgement but on the other hand, judging the book by its cover, he has a point.
my favorite souls clone, even though "souls clone" is a misnomer because playing it like dark souls will be a bad time. in the same way that playing nioh like dark souls is a bad time.
its still pretty flawed though. i never really liked the way leveling/stats/classes were handled, but its at least unique.
