I dunno man, Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight was a thing. As were several games on the Unreal and FAKK engines. Halo CE had some graphical improvements and it played nice on XBox but I'm not seeing what it brought that other games hadn't.

If you don't like Halo, don't play it. It's okay to accept that something just isn't for you, no need to try and convince yourself and everyone else that it's bad. Don't be a brainless contrarian.
I just played through Halo 1 yesterday and, man, it aged like milk. Awful game. Playing through 2 now and it's far superior.
Halo multiplayer is fantastic. I just got off the phone with one of my oldest friends after having played some Halo with him for ~3 hours.
My absolute favorite multiplayer FPS is TF2, but I'm the only one in my group of friends that really has a handle on playing these kinds of games with a keyboard and mouse. Everything in Halo is so cleverly designed around the Xbox controller that it still impresses me. The purposely floaty jumps and regenerating health system make it such a natural fit for the controller and make it fun for my friends who don't want to deal with armor or health packs in a multiplayer FPS. Wonderful series of games.
I've enjoyed the multiplayer in every Halo game I've tried. Halo 2 has the best campaign though, easily.
