I'm interested in getting a handheld PC but I absolutely HATE steam and other "game launchers". Aside from needing a steam account to order the damn thing how will I have to interact with steam if I get one of these?

It's steamOS, anon. You can't not have the steam client on it.
      >I'm interested in getting a handheld PC
why not get one of the million others that will probably arrive more quickly anyway?

SteamOS 3 is just Arch with KDE and Steam Big Picture mode by default. You don't have to use SteamOS on the device, and you don't actually have to use Steam at all once you initially boot the device. You can just go to desktop mode and have regular KDE desktop.

is there a way to always boot directly to desktop, remove steam and stop it wiping everything from my filesystem whenever it wants to update steam?

just install a new distro at that point

Yes, but you can just install some other Arch based distro with KDE if you want that. Manjaro is pretty accessible.

so why even bother getting a Steam Deck at that point?

The controls, ergos, power of the hardware. At the moment there is no other comparable UMPC.

you might as well say "because it's valve" and move on? Seems like you're wasting my time at this point

Ah yes, I buy a device purely because I'm such a fanboy and it's from my favorite company to then remove the OS and software developed by said company.

after that, you have paid your daddy corporation, so it doesn't matter what you do. Also, no proof that you changed a damn thing, valvetroon

Yeah because it was a hypothetical scenario. Don't take everything at face value Mr. ESL.
What's the matter? Can't order one in your shithole?

so you didn't change a thing. So you are a valve fanboy by your own admission?
                >hurr u r ESL
                Nice deflection, dead thread

Does anyone know if you can still send it back to Valve for repairs if you bought it second-hand from someone?
