Comfy Fantasy MMO's/Lord of the Rings Online

What are the comfiest MMORPG's out there right now?

Right now I'm downloading LotRO, because I've heard good things about it and I love Lord of the Rings. Lately I've been playing a LOT of SWTOR, now while I'm not sure I'll stop playing it completely I've been struck with a mood for a fantasy vibe instead of sci-fi/fantasy.

Thought about FFXIV or GW2 but I'm not sure my shitty laptop could run them.

What are the comfiest and fun fantasy MMO's out there right now?

Is LotRO worth playing nowadays while we're on the topic?

XI really is the comfiest MMO. Best visual and especially audio design, great setting with fun characters. Downside is retail is on its way into cold sleep and the private server scene is dogshit.

Yeah if you're looking for low hardware requirement MMORPGs that are the comfy fantasy, definitely lotro is one of the gotos. DnD Online is another. Project Gorgon is another. Fractured online maybe? If it ever releases. Old school runescape might be another. If they do another vanilla classic season/re-release of WoW, I'd try that. Gw1 is another choice. ESO if you can run it, but that's more of a "single player" MMO, if you know what that means. Final suggestion is maybe something like an arpg. Diablo, PoE, etc. If you're looking for something easy on the rig, Diablo 2 resurrected is a good one to go with. Diablo 4 would probably be closer to a MMO.

Other thing to note is all of these, with the exception of OSR, FO, ESO and Diablo, are well past their prime. Vanilla classic now is not nearly what it was back when it was first released. Funny enough it may be closer to the population that it was on true launch back in 2004. Classic wotlk is pretty populated though if that's not too out there. Still kind of fantasy adventure. Fractured online is EA with shaky financial ground, but I hope they can deliver. Gw1 is a good game like lotr, DnD online, etc. But since its past its prime its not nearly as populated as it was during its hayday. You can still do most, if not all the content. And you still find players. But its not insanely populated as it was back in 2008 for example. Project gorgon is EA, but its very slow development and a small audience.

Personally, out of the bunch + only looking at ones that are currently playble. I prefer LOTRO, vanilla classic, and Gw1. I invested a good amount of time into project gorgon. But yeah the lack of players kind of was meh for me. Most of these games you gotta put in effort to join a community to find people to play with routine. But some more than others.

I hate FF14, the style, the lore, effin lalafels..

LOTRO is the one MMO I always want to play but always end up playing others,
it IS so effin comfy but I usually end up grinding for TP instead of leveling my main.
IMHO it's actually better looking than FF, but you NEED to install it on an SSD, don't even try playing it of a cheapass laptop HDD.

GW2 is currently my MMO and it should run on a laptop too, when you dial down two very important settings concerning player effects,
then disable water reflections and tone down shadows.
It's simply the least dated looking of any post 2010 MMOs and their action combat remains industry standard.

Agreed. As far as "modern" MMORPGs go, I really like gw2. The story is alright. Some parts good, some parts bad. Hard to get a good story in mmorpgs these days. That being said, its the only modern one I've played that feels like they at least *try* to keep the open world relevant. Open worlds are usually my favorite parts of mmorpgs. But I find a lot of recent releases put it on the back burner. So they end up feeling super boring or they become dead after everyone has leveled. Its nice being able to do things like world bosses/meta events, seeing tons of players participating and things like that.

I had so much fun in lotro about a year ago. There's a shit ton of content. Just be aware it consists almost entirely of solo quests and whatever dungeons/raids you're able to solo at this point. It's fun to get to see some pretty great impressions of Tolkien's world that you don't get in other games or the movies though. Many of the zones are impressively detailed and beautiful.

LotRO being quest humping slop is a crime against humanity. It could be so good if it wasn't so bad.

Yeah it was super comfy but server performance is fricked now

FFXI is pretty comfy but private servers are killing its population, and FFXIV had potential to be comfy but is ruined by all the ERPers and RP nightclubs

      >FFXI is pretty comfy but private servers are killing its population
That's a weird cope. People just don't want to play the butchered version that retail is.

          >it feels a like like gw2
I don't know what you mean but it is nothing like Guild Wars 2.

On private servers that are based on the 75 level cap version of the game it's one of the few real MMORPGs you can still play today that are partying focused. It's a slow paced game that's not for everyone but if you can get past the ancient UI and the weird controls there's a great game for you to enjoy. Note that it's not a "rush to endgame" type of game. It is very much focused on the journey and you'll likely end up leveling multiple jobs on the way.
