What the frick, the Japanese version's menus are not excruciatingly slow? I never knew that. Why is this? If I had to guess, it's probably fixed width fonts vs. Latin meme fonts. Variable width fonts were literally a mistake.
I checked Mother 1 on the GBA, and it sounds much worse because its sound hardware lacks the triangle channel of the NES. The image resolution is lower too.

There's been a few western fan movements that gained traction. Project Rainfall being the most famous example fo this, getting a three of the games it was for released in the west, albeit reluctantly. Then there was Digimon fans having enough Bamcos bullshit and pressured them into releasing Next Order, and eventually made them realize Digimon still had a fanbase. And hell, even in the 90s enough fans rightfully threw a fit that Sega almost butchered Popful Mail and turned into a goddamn Sonic Underground tie-in, but fans sent in very angry letters to them, so they eventually had Working Designs localize it as the game it always was.
Sometimes fans do get shit done, not as often as we would like, but it happens on rare occasion.
And likewise I was very excited about Famicom Dectective Club being translated.

In the case of Mother 3, since the translation is already out, these hardcore fans have no incentive to actually pressure Nintendo, and I'm still very skeptical as to whether Nintendo could be pressured into anything anyway.
I don't even know why they decided to re-release and translate FDC now. Like, I don't think anybody was asking for it, they probably just thought if they are remaking the game anyway, they might as well throw in a translation. The decision paid off. I wish this happened more often.

I cannot believe Nintendo treats emulation as a service. Why not just sell the ROMs? People will buy cardboard products just to be able to say they own it, they would absolutely do the same for ROMs.

The EU once spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a study on it, and it turned out online piracy doesn't harm sales but it sometimes boosts them. They tried to act as if it never existed but someone found the paper because it was public.

A hell of a lot. I don't think most record companies care if it's one or two, but when you have 10+, it's an issue. It also depends on who you rip off. If I recall, Zeppelin, ACDC and GNR are pretty anal about it. MJ's estate is especially tight. Now, I don't really know why, but for some reason, jap composers for games really like to just rip shit off wholesale. Koji Kondo did it, Kenji Yamamoto (Bandai Namco) did it and that was a HUGE deal. It was so bad that he pretty much got exiled from the business and doesn't have a hand in Dragon Ball games anymore, even though the dude also did some themes for the older movies and some anime tracks, and was the composer for the then running Dragon Ball Kai. It was seriously a big issue.
Now I dunno why they do it. To save time? Is it autism? Do they act like kids and go "that music would fit perfectly here!"? Who knows. I'll leave you with one more tidbit and you can stew on this.
Daisuke Ishiwatari of Arcsys fame was pretty much the main composer for the series. The dude is notoriously a big music lover, naming mechanics in game after features on a guitar, to referencing other songs in his themes. If you want a reference, look it up online, someone has a few.
Now, Daisuke has been pretty good about his homages, as they sound different enough to not warrant copyright holders poking their nose. There's one instance though that I remember reading about that's stayed in the back of my mind all this time though, can't seem to find it anymore.
For XX, he made a boss theme for I-No called "Midnight Carnival". People picked up it sounded pretty familiar to X-Japan's "Kurenai". A lot familiar, actually. The opening riffs are nearly identical. At a con, a fan asked him about the similarities, and he responded: "I've never heard of X-Japan before."

Well we don't know. One big thing is that Itoi owns partial copyright of the Mother series. Apparently it's 50%, which is huge. So basically every decision done with the franchise has to also be approved by him. With that in mind, if they wanted to do a remake, they'd have to run it by him. And if he doesn't like whatever music they try to come up with, it's dead in the water. Even more so if he's firm on "the original music is how the game was intended to be played". I would respect it, personally.

realistically, even if they wanted to release the game in the west they wouldn't take the time and effort to localize it just to stick it on NSO.
mother 1/earthbound beginnings was released on the Wii U VC because nintendo already had the game fully translated just sitting there in their archives.
the only way mother 3 will receive an official translation is if they ever remake the game.
The first Fire Emblem game received a (limited time) translation that you could buy from the Switch eShop after being on the Japanese Switch Online app for about a year.
If anything, an official Mother 3 translation may be sooner than you realize. And for all we know, Nintendo will most likely make it limited for some asinine reason.
