>use it in the first level of the game
>never use it again
Why did they do this? Yes, I know it's also used in Fillmore Act 2 in Japan and then changed for the international release, but that raises more questions than answers.
Also ActRaiser thread because this game is rad.

    >US has to unlock Action Mode; no difficulty selection.
    >PAL version has Action/Professional Mode unlocked from start and 3 difficulty levels
    >PAL (60Hz Fix) runs at NTSC speed with correct music speed
    >JP version is 'uncensored' and harder all around than the western releases
    >NSS (Nintendo Super System) arcade version is action levels only, similar to Action Mode with different scoring & difficulty
what the frick version is best?

This is what always bugs me about ActRaiser. There's no "definitive version" across the different versions. Apparently after the JPN release, the US version got difficulty adjustments, and after the US release, the EUR version got FURTHER difficulty adjustments. So does that mean gameplay-wise the EUR version is the best one? And yes, having something like the US/EUR gameplay combined with the JPN title screen, original sprites, script, etc. would be nice.

      >uncensored?
      breasts?

      No.

Action mode isn't very important and if there's a version that only has that then that version certainly isn't the best. ActRaiser 2's action is good enough to support an entire game, but this game's action isn't. It's cool for the mode to be included but it should never be considered the main mode, whether you like the town sections or not.

Difficulty selection and/or higher difficulty certainly sounds like a good thing.

I remember beating a rental copy of the game on Christmas Eve one year and finding the ending extremely melancholy. You visit each town and reminisce about the people there and when you check in on the temple...there's nobody there. Since you've wiped out all the demons and solved all their material issues, your people have forgotten about you. You and your angel buddy kinda take the whole thing in stride though. I found it kind of deep when I was a kid.

If you'd like to refresh that feeling, play through ActRaiser 2 and see what happens at the end of that one.

What happens? I beat 1 but not 2 since it lacked the Sim aspect

Great game with an absolutely shit remake

I enjoyed the remake. I liked the expansion of the creation part. The optional area felt kinda like an afterthought, but it was still neat.

I started playing this recently and while I enjoy it as a whole, the platforming parts are probably the weakest aspect of the game. Not awful, but after playing a ton of great platformers on the same system it feels a bit basic.

Its definitely intentional since it was trying to be more of an action game than a platforming one.

I wish there were more games like SCIV and Actraiser that have that fantasy film feeling

At least we still got Alcaleone

ActRaiser is kind of a weird game in general though. The fact that half of it is a town building sim makes it completely different from other platformers.

I forgot about the recent-ish remake. I do think it's really cool how they made snes arrangements of all the new songs. Is Renaissance worth playing actually?

I haven't played it but something I like about Actraiser is it's short length and snappy pace - you can beat the game in a lazy afternoon if you want. The idea of padding out the game so it can be 20+ hours long seems crazy to me.

It is really hard to market and sell a short game these days. The concept of quality or replaying and mastering a game are completely gone.

Just played/beat this game for the first time this week and hated every stage. Controls felt awkward and the bosses all sucked. But when I got to the very end and did the boss rush and saw all the people I helped I completely turned around on the game and thought it was alright. I don't even know why, but having to learn all those crappy bosses in a row and then the final one was a fun challenge. Also that little jingle that plays as you're entering a stage is so freaking iconic. I love it.

I hear the sequel is harder and only the stages so I may never even bother with it.

Unrelated to and not mocking the last post, but,

Just beat this game for the first time, since I started the file about 12 years ago (or maybe more). I thought I could never beat that boss rush at the end, but this thread inspired me to give a real try. A lot of button mashing, meteor-spamming, and slightly unsatisfying ending-watching later, and here I am. Thanks anons in this thread for the closure.

Now should I start ActRaiser 2 or finish my Soul Blazer file that I started in 2009?

With how much the music sounds like a Castlevania theme, I want to mention how much the sounds also sound a LOT like Super Castlevania.

Well it came out only a year later
