What a shame; they really thought people would be fine seeing and hearing that shit every time they need a spell.
            >no direct damage spells
Okay, sure. Just cast whatever utility spell before rushing in to beat up shit at half health and stamina; what could go wrong? Nevermind being a sitting duck the whole time while channeling any spell. ffs the whole point of getting a strong source of ranged damage is to compensate your bones turning into glass and breaking the minute someone sneezes in your general direction. If they were worried about shitters spamming fireball they could make it cost stamina, which as a sorcerer you would already be considerate of spending. Fart out three fireballs? Your target better be dead and alone otherwise you aren't running away or fighting back the minute something gets close enough to crush your skull.

It's meant to trick PvP whales into thinking they're getting an edge over their plebian peers, but the weapons you can get are just like the dlc: star metal tier. The only way it works in profiting from singleplayers is through artificial scarcity by rotating cosmetics in the store.

Wizards in the old sword and sorcery stories fought kind of like Batman. They had a bunch of neat tricks and cool toys but these had limited uses and the wizard still usually ended up swinging a sword around once he exhausted his magical options. The vast majority of their magic, while it could be powerful, was just not oriented towards combat. So not having fireball type spells is acceptable if it's done right.

People of the Black Circle by Robert E Howard
                https://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0600941h.html

                >But the next attack came swiftly. They all saw it—a white puffball of smoke that tumbled over the tower-rim and came drifting and rolling down the slope toward them. Others followed it. They seemed harmless, mere woolly globes of cloudy foam, but Conan stepped aside to avoid contact with the first. Behind him one of the Irakzai reached out and thrust his sword into the unstable mass. Instantly a sharp report shook the mountainside.
                >There was a burst of blinding flame, and then the puffball had vanished, and the too-curious warrior remained only a heap of charred and blackened bones. The crisped hand still gripped the ivory sword-hilt, but the blade was gone, melted and destroyed by that awful heat. Yet men standing almost within reach of the victim had not suffered except to be dazzled and half blinded by the sudden flare.
                >The slope above them was almost covered by the billowing spheres. Kerim Shah bent his bow and sent a shaft into the mass, and those touched by the arrow burst like bubbles in spurting flame. His men followed his example and for the next few minutes it was as if a thunderstorm raged on the mountain slope, with bolts of lightning striking and bursting in showers of flame. When the barrage ceased, only a few arrows were left in the quivers of the archers.
                >THEY pushed on grimly, over soil charred and blackened, where the naked rock had in places been turned to lava by the explosion of those diabolical bombs.

(samegay) it's not quite a 'fireball' or magic missile but it's a very direct offensive sorcery. I do appreciate not going full anachronistic magic missile but I think you can make room for vaguely offensive spells. It's more that it would require a lot of alchemical work and preparation and not just be
                >Skedaddle skedoodle I'm going to summon fireballs and burn your noodle

alchemy yes. at the end of black citadel?? the one where he gets captured by a wizard and enemy king after a pitched battle conan escapes the dungeon with the help of another imprisoned wizard and comes back at the end. he meets up with evil wizard, evil wizard doesnt cast any spells but has this grenade but before he can throw it conan chops off his head. evil wizard is still alive but his head is taken by his rival wizard foe that was an eagle??? or an eagle remote controlled by the rival wizard.
basically more alchemy, animal control like in the pict story. like you said there are instances of offensive spells but none of the lightening beams or fireballs so any offensive spells would have to almost be indirect and smart on how they work without turning into star wars laser beams.

It's funny how in Conan there is magic of every kind but direct offensive magic. Hypnotism, psychic blasts, shapeshifting, necromancy, weather control, demonic invocation, curses, tornado surfing, ritual binding, astral projection, life stealing, temporal distortion, and the like. The closest Howard gets to flinging magical balls of fire is the laser-shooting wand in Red Nails.

Stop pulling shit out your ass, anon. The battle pass and all store options have already been stated to be cosmetic only, at the absolute worst it'll just be pay to skip progress which affects no one but the morons who buy it.

The battle pass is nothing more than a potential way for them to keep making money as they improve the game and possibly bring in more consistent players. Do they deserve that money, or will this be the end of the game? I don't know, decide for yourself.

Battlepass or micro-transactions always give me a bad vibe but I guess it's not any different than all the cosmetic DLCs. Maybe let people nitpick what they want to buy instead of buying an entire set.

Whatever, I don't care about that stuff that much.

Maybe not everything in the battle pass, but at least some of it is able to just be outright bought. The actual idea is fine since they do obviously need money to keep the game running and updating, but if it's one of those you can buy Conan Coins in packs of 300, 900 or 1200 and all the items are priced like 450, 1100 and 1300 they can frick right off.

My only real worry is how this will all function with offline games or player owned servers, since in theory you could just cheat in the ways to beat all the battle pass missions and playing on Official Servers is a terrible experience.

Given that it's available on both private servers and for singleplayer, I bet they really don't give a damn if you cheat through the progression. A laughable amount of the unlocks are for free and in any other case - they already got your money so what do they care?

That's the problem, they aren't. You're going to end up with bullshit cheese-strats that might not even work, and even then could be nerfed down the line. The sorcery Funcom has shown is slow, almost entirely oriented towards utility (except the rng lightning storm), and can be easily countered by anyone. The corruption tax means you'll be running into battle with 80% health/stamina at best and 50% at worst; you're made of fricking glass. That kind of stat configuration only ever works in other games by granting it some advantage, which usually takes the form of range and damage. That's the whole point of the glass cannon archetype. Without any reliable source of damage to pressure opponents who probably have more health and stamina a sorcerer will be forced to fight the old fashioned way, that will see them immediately bodied.
You can see Funcom trying to build around this flaw by letting players corrupt stats for special bonuses, but what they have shown so far doesn't inspire confidence (raising damage in proportion to your level of corruption). It will be a nightmare to balance, and Funcom can't balance for shit. Sorcerers are going to be limp noodles that fold under the slightest pressure or glass swords that shatter the minute someone lands a hit.

thats kinda how they are in conan. i mean for sorcerers, he just lobs off their heads via brute strength. i like it, it fits within the conan theme, cant directly recall homies straight up shooting fireballs in the classic stories. maybe imprisoning to another void, but that was done by the imprisoned space elephant and he did that to the evil sorcerer. even thoth amon, one of the more powerful ones was only able to become powerful via his ring and he wasnt floating and shooting fricking fireballs. more like summoned dark demon types.

Probably something from the pastiche rather than anything REH wrote. Thoth-Amon didn't really factor into Howard's stories other than as some nebulous figure that was out there making moves. Hell, I can only think of him actually appearing once in Phoenix on the Sword. In The God in the Bowl he's just mentioned by name.

No, he sends the shadow demon baboon after the aquilonian noble who enslaved him. Said noble just happened to be in the middle of attempting to assassinate Conan at the time.

It's funny how often Thoth-Amon and Conan cross paths without actually meeting, or even being aware the other exists. Phoenix on the Sword and The God in the Bowl are cases where Thoth endangers Conan's life accidentally, and in Hour of the Dragon Conan inadvertently saves Thoth from coup by leading sorcerers from Khitai to Stygia that kill his rivals.

That's part of my issues with the pastiche. That, and the fact that I've read a few, they weren't bad or anything but they definitely lacked the same spark that Howard's writing had.

      oh no no no no

no, 12 out of the 60 levels in the battlepass are free and judging by the two example pages shown during the livestream there won't be any of the good shit available.

I can't fault Funcom a battle pass because so far as we know it's cosmetic, comes with enough currency to pay for the next pass, and most of all I live in fear of Anarchy Online getting shut down. That they've kept both AO and Age of Conan open all these years has earned them the benefit of my doubt. They have not managed AO well recently, but it also makes them no money at all. For those suspicious about what we're going to be paying for in Exiles, I will note that AO subscribers get reward points which can be used to buy faster vehicles, hearthstones, and a few other powerful items, as well as level boosts. These are mainly conveniences for long time subscribers.

I have this issue. This one came out right around the time that Tomas Giorello stopped doing the art for Dark Horse's Conan the Cimmerian.

That book was the shit and Giorello's art was fantastic. That book had adaptations for Black Colossus and Rogues in the House that I still have laying around somewhere. I wish I could find back-issues of the Hour of the Dragon adaptation they did for King Conan. Giorello did the art for those as well.

        It certainly has nice artwork.

This one wasn't done by Giorello but by a guy called Paul Lee. Wikipedia has got to be incomplete or something for their listings of Dark Horse conan books or something because it's telling me that the Rogues In The House adaptation doesn't exist even though I'm looking at all four issues of it right now.

Lisner did a ton of really good covers for the run. Frank Cho did a few, too.

      Anonymous

It's like Rust but the PvP is terribly balanced, which is a shame. It's far too easy to raid. That could change in 3.0, but I don't have my hopes up. It is far more single player friendly than Rust since the game kind of has a story and some interesting dungeon crawling. You can change practically every setting and use mods to make it more challenging/interesting, but eh you're probably better off just playing modded Skyrim.

The bulk of the current Conan playerbase is ERPers on private servers with 1,000 mods. Maybe 1/4 of the playerbase is PvPers, also mostly on private servers. Officials are a disaster. First, it was because Funcom has a totally hands off policy which allowed cheaters to run rampant. Now, they police cheating but they're too harsh and the rules are vague. They will delete entire clans for building "too big," but there's no hard rule on what "too big" means. It's just up to the CSR who answers the report.
3.0 will probably revitalize the game for a bit, but for how long will obviously depend on

Yeah the only one that has any actual bearing on gameplay at all is siptah and thats a full map expansion. The rest is literally all cosmetic stuff. Weapons/armor comes in iron/starmetal equivalent stats

Can you turn off level requirements for the gear in the options now? When I played the game years ago, I remember being annoyed that I killed a tough as frick boss (at least in single player) only to realize that I couldn't use any of the weapons until level 60.

They removed the level requirement for legendary chests a while ago.

It sounds like I need to play this again then. That was the one thing that really annoyed me about the game.
