Most games you can beat it with starting gear if you are good enough, and even the ones that do require you to improve still ask you use skill more than gear as a means to win, however MMos have to keep you coming back so they can't afford skill to ever be a factor in it, it would reduce play time and would make the whales leave.
A great example where this happen was Destiny. When that game first launched it was a shit storm because MMO regulars were losing their shit that fps players could get past parts of the game with low level gear because beading a head shot was more important than having the best item, and then they patched it to where if your gear was under a certain level it just wouldn't do damage to enemies making fps players annoyed because skill didn't matter anymore, but the payer base grew as people prefer a no skill game that rewards you if you just keep playing it.
I'm still amazed at the amount of people that quit WoW after 10 to 15 years to move over to FFXIV to not even pause and consider what they were even doing.

Later after the company i was working at went bankrupt, i switched jobs to healer, and this time it clicked for me (probably because I was already done with half of ARR... I almost quit again in post Prae ARR because I figured it would be a few hours but its not. Post ARR is just as long as fricking ARR).
If Dawntrail doesn't drastically change the design direction of the game, I'm dropping and not coming back. It wont so I'm debating just cutting out the middle man and dropping now.

Going to get my head bitten off for saying this but it honestly feels like the development mindset and community feel behind WoW when it started to go to shit towards the end of WotLK. In which chasing new audiences, less willing to engage became more important than maintaining anything. The mainstream content became casual AFK content, and the gap gameplay and time-commitment wise between that casual timewasting and the real content became significant. Meaning they weren't catering to one, diverse audience anymore, but instead two wildly different audiences with different needs, desires, and fricking hate playing with eachother or being made to do eachother's content. There's literally no way to please one without fricking over another, but the 'hardcore' audience is also where a lot of your lifestyle marketing comes from.
It's an awkward state and it takes ages to kill a game, I'm sure WoW still makes stupid money. But I don't think it's debatable that WoW is at least spiritually dead.
I'd love to be wrong because XIV was fun.

This, after EW I don't trust any changes they do to any of the jobs since at best they'll just stay the same but feel a little different and at worst they become unplayably boring (like SMN, how the frick did they think going from playing a song on a piano to pressing 1-2-3 would be good for the job in any way?). Sure, they lure in a lot of new players with the game being easy to learn but the moment they reach end game and take a look at the current way the game works a lot of them just takes a look around and say "That's it?", some even does it before reaching the end of HW.
All of my friends that gave XIV a try all quit thanks to the statement above and none of them are planing to ever come back since they saw the direction the game has been heading in for 10 years in the span of a few months and said "Nope, I've already been through this in WoW/GW/ESO/whatever so I'm out!". I'm about to do the same after having played the game for 5 years now and seeing it climb before taking a long fall in the same way that WoW did and just like WoW, it just hasn't hit the ground yet

but anon, Cata is when they changed their mind on WOTLK (and tbh FFXIV) dungeon design and tightened up all the dungeons to be heroic level difficulty. Not as difficult as Sunwell era dungeons, but a huge step up from WOTLK gangbangs.

Covid lockdowns was killer here in Australia, we were locked up for ages. My social habits and my effort to play even video games diminished severely. The most I do now everyday is watch tiktok for like 2 hours. Its as struggle for me to watch movies now, I have no idea whats gone on.
Its probably a mix of people actually telling you the truth that they've been doing the same shit for so long now that it has lost its magic after all these years and the game isn't really in a good state now either which just makes playing the game at all less fun, to the point where most people are probably ready to take a break from it or just play/do something else entierly

you wont get the same comfy rpg leveling experience as you did back in the day, it's almost all done through the msq which is cutscene after cutscene with fetch quests and the ocasional dungeon or trial inbetween
it's like a visual novel with an mmorpg tied to it, the story takes forever to get interesting and most classes feel painfully slow and lacking until the higher levels when you have most of your abilities, so be prepared for that
You could always skip the cutscenes if you just want to get to the combat, that will actually save you a lot of time getting to the better content
also Stormblood will soon be added to the free trial so you could wait for that, it has plenty of fun fights, ultimates, and Eureka which is an area with a separate leveling system that works pretty much like old mmorpgs
Unironically go play The Old Republic MMO. Leveling story and sidekicks are tied to which class you pick. I leveled a Jedi Consular and Sith Warrior to top level in vanilla. They were wildly different experiences. Also sidekicks are there for both story and so you don’t get progression gimped by your playstyle so you can always have a tank/healer/dps with you. General gameplay was similar to WOW. I don’t know if it’s changed much over the years.

The only cons are lazy healers assume you're invincible and will heal you less than other tanks. The the other con is there isn't many good glam options, the AF gear are virtually identical and there isn't much variety in the axes 90% of them just look like giant warped pieces of metal, And the common Tank gear just doesn't loan itself to the Warrior's savsge identity

When that game first launched it was a shit storm because MMO regulars were losing their shit that fps players could get past parts of the game with low level gear because beading a head shot was more important than having the best item, and then they patched it to where if your gear was under a certain level it just wouldn't do damage to enemies making fps players annoyed because skill didn't matter anymore, but the payer base grew as people prefer a no skill game that rewards you if you just keep playing it.
MMOs are just gacha games with more steps.
I'm still amazed at the amount of people that quit WoW after 10 to 15 years to move over to FFXIV to not even pause and consider what they were even doing.

Going to get my head bitten off for saying this but it honestly feels like the development mindset and community feel behind WoW when it started to go to shit towards the end of WotLK. The mainstream content became casual AFK content, and the gap gameplay and time-commitment wise between that casual timewasting and the real content became significant. Meaning they weren't catering to one, diverse audience anymore, but instead two wildly different audiences with different needs, desires, and fricking hate playing with eachother or being made to do eachother's content. There's literally no way to please one without fricking over another, but the 'hardcore' audience is also where a lot of your lifestyle marketing comes from.
It's an awkward state and it takes ages to kill a game, I'm sure WoW still makes stupid money. But I don't think it's debatable that WoW is at least spiritually dead.

This, after EW I don't trust any changes they do to any of the jobs since at best they'll just stay the same but feel a little different and at worst they become unplayably boring (like SMN, how the frick did they think going from playing a song on a piano to pressing 1-2-3 would be good for the job in any way?). Sure, they lure in a lot of new players with the game being easy to learn but the moment they reach end game and take a look at the current way the game works a lot of them just takes a look around and say "That's it?", some even does it before reaching the end of HW.
All of my friends that gave XIV a try all quit thanks to the statement above and none of them are planing to ever come back since they saw the direction the game has been heading in for 10 years in the span of a few months and said "Nope, I've already been through this in WoW/GW/ESO/whatever so I'm out!". I'm about to do the same after having played the game for 5 years now and seeing it climb before taking a long fall in the same way that WoW did and just like WoW, it just hasn't hit the ground yet

Unironically go play The Old Republic MMO. Leveling story and sidekicks are tied to which class you pick. I leveled a Jedi Consular and Sith Warrior to top level in vanilla. They were wildly different experiences. Also sidekicks are there for both story and so you don’t get progression gimped by your playstyle so you can always have a tank/healer/dps with you. General gameplay was similar to WOW. I don’t know if it’s changed much over the years.

The only cons are lazy healers assume you're invincible and will heal you less than other tanks. The the other con is there isn't many good glam options, the AF gear are virtually identical and there isn't much variety in the axes 90% of them just look like giant warped pieces of metal, And the common Tank gear just doesn't loan itself to the Warrior's savsge identity
