FF VIII has not been considered the worst FF in ages though. Pretty much since XII came out... Now it sits right were it´s always belonged by the side of VII, IX and Tactics as one of the great ones.
As for CC it´s only considered inferior to CT, which honestly is nothing to be ashamed of to begin with. Besides there are layers on the criticism, some don´t consider it inferior at all while others only consider it mid in comparison and claim that if evaluated by itself the game is very good.
We do agree that the games are far superior than most current modern games though.

the steam remaster has pretty bad reviews about its technical flaws. just go read them.
it's not so hated. most people who talk shit about it haven't played it. its battle engine, while not good, is better than shitty xenogears, and its story and characters are generally better than final fantasy 7. the hate you see is just concentrated stupidity that the internet makes possible by allowing vocal minorities to appear more massive than they really are. chrono cross is fine as a psx jrpg.
It's hated for not being Chrono Trigger. If it had been a standalone game it would probably have a dedicated base of fans like FF8 or Xenogears, but it has the misfortune of standing next to one of the most beloved JRPGs ever made.

conquest is not even close to the worst, birthrate is worse, awakening is way worse(probably the worst of them all) and even 3 houses is worse(tho its closer)
Chrono Cross apologists haven't played the game. It's a garbled mess of made-up bullshit and asspulls. The battles aren't tense at all. I wanted to like it, got it on ps1 20-some years ago.

CC gets hate because it's not CT and it kind of tacks on/disrespects the characters of CT as well. Which is really too bad because it's a beautiful game in it's own right.
FF8 gets hate because the junction system is jank as hell and easy to break thanks to card mod. The level scaling and the "weird" story also seem to be points of contention. 8 is a solid game regardless.
Fates is hated because it's shit.
I don't understand why Fates is still used as the punching bag of the franchise this much when Awakening does almost the exact same things but worse in every department that isn't storytelling/writing.
Awakening sort of gets a pass because it's a series reboot. It also didn't release as 2 generally sub-par games with a 3rd "true route" that drops the ball completely. The characters/storytelling/writing is a big thing, too, Awakening at least tries to seem competent in that regard and it almost works. The future kids mechanic, while moronic either way, at least makes sense in Awakening, while in Fates it was clearly just shoehorned in.
The only thing that's genuinely better in Fates is the map/mission design in Conquest, and even then it's not like every map is a masterpiece.
TL;DR: the only thing that Fates actually does better is gameplay in 1/3rd of the game and it manages to do many other things worse.
Fates having 3 story paths as separate games while also not making getting to know the characters practically mandatory made people give its story a bunch of shit. Mix that with the dozen or so random exceedingly stupid plot points and it makes it easy for people to call anything involving its story crap. The 2 mainline games around it both have plenty of the same problems (Awakening and 3 Houses) but get accused of it less since they were both many player's proper introduction to the franchise and those new players enjoy putting their game on a pedestal. Engage gets the same flak since everyone came from 3 houses "deep" story engage having a pretty normal fire emblem plot along with-it having the outwardly quirky characters being too anime in their designs turned people off. Engage's quirky character complaint is especially funny to me since other games have had way more absurd characters in them, they just didn't have characters that look like V-Tubers.
The other two Fire Emblem Fates games and Awakening are much worse than Conquest
I don't think anyone considers Conquest to be the worst FE game
CC and FFVIII are the best games in their series. Same goes for Zelda 2 and Simons Quest (at least on NES)
