Picked up Dark Alliance on Steam. Looks like Dark Alliance 2 comes out soon, as well. Started playing DA, but man is that shit fricking hard even on normal difficulty. Wizard bawd sucks fricking ass.
It's wouldn't say it's a mess, but it's not quite as polished as BG1.

Look, I like BG1. I am playing it currently. (F/C) But BG2 is more polished than BG1. It looks better, it has more usability features and it offers far more options to the player. Companions are more fleshed out and the quests have more thought put into them.
But that might be just me, seeing as I did play through unmodded BG1 before the EE had even come out.
I like BG 1 story better than BG 2. Yes BG 2 has more content, high level stuff, character banter, etc. But still i like Sarevok conspiracy more.
Fair point, I do prefer the BG1 quest line over the BG2 one. But that's not really polish. Polish is why TuTu was the most often used mod.
Honestly even the books based on the game were pretty good.
