whats your point anon? every media ever made was created with at least a few of these in mind, just under different names.

you think the guys who made pong or tetris did "focus testing" and hired behavioral psychologist consultants because they were concerned with things like "economy of attention", "the algorithm" and "optimizing brand awareness"?

those games both suck what’s your point

        Anonymous

no but the creator of pong probably got some of his buddies at university to play it and thought "this game should be fun" which are just different ways of saying those things.
this thread is pointless, what are you criticizing? capitalism? it seems like you have nothing to add to this conversation.

do you think people who are addicted to mmos, gachas etc are having fun?

            Anonymous

            is that your point?
read "addiction by design" it's not "fun" it's "zoning out" and it doesn't work on everyone, these people seek out that feeling and predators take advantage of it.
and yes it's cancer but I think everyone already agrees with that and it's certainly not a new thing.

you might as well as made a thread titled "hey do you guys think cancer is bad?"

People choose their addictions. Don't want to be addicted to heroin? Don't use it. Don't want to be a gambling addict? Don't gamble. Don't want to pathologically grind in a MMO? Don't play it. If you don't do something in the first place then you'll never find yourself addicted to it.

This. The truth is harsh. Drug addicts have a negative effect on society just like gacha addicts have a negative effect on vidya.

That means it's morally correct to get rid of addicts of any kind without trying to help them. I agree with you then.

Pong in its raw state is a million times more fun than garbage heaps like Suicide Squad or Nu-Spiderman.

They were concerned with all those things they just didn't call it that. "The algorithm" for example is the gameplay loop. The "economy of attention" is keeping the player engaged through elements like scoring or whatever. Optimizing brand awareness, wew Atari and Tetris absolutely did that after they formed a company. They trademarked their names after all.

No, thousands of people are low IQ morons who cannot create, and therefor choose a hobby that costs them loads of money, like drinking, gambling or drugs. These people weeds themselves out, and if it wasn't for gatchashit, they would just join the next degenerate hobby.
There are people on this world that are so utterly devoid of ideas or even basic thinking, they cannot have fun as long as they aren't controlled and guided by an outside force. Those are the slaveminds, the eternal workers, the morons that clean your streets and canals, drive your groceries, build your homes and fight in your wars. Their existence is a reality filled with nothing but pain, boredom and the rush of consuming their favorite drug.
They suffer and they will never realize why, so you can enjoy a more comfortable life.

Again, it doesn't matter. morons will always seek addiction, because morons know only suffering.
If you ever got addicted by consumption alone, then you are a slave who is unable to create or think for himself. You are not interesting in building yourself up, but in forgetting yourself. You are literal trash.

It doesn't matter, anon. If it wasn't for gatchashit, you would be playing MMOshit. If it wasn't for MMOshit, you would be gambling. If it wasn't for gambling, you would be drinking, etc pp.
No matter how much you try to deny reality, the harsh thruth is that there a billions of people on this earth who would gladly consume dogshit if it would mean that they feel a little less pain. Hell, in Africa they literally inhale fermented feces because they are so trapped in their slaveminds.
If anything, you should be thankful that some of the biggest morons on earth are just playing addictive video games instead of having to meet them on your streets.

one concrete example: why are "pop up numbers" a trend in every big game now, all of a sudden? they are literally designed for zoomerbrains with adhd and fried dopamine receptors who need constant "number go up" stimulus and nonsensical flashy color spamming (it's the same zoomerbrain now addicted to tiktok, that can't focus for longer than 30 seconds video bits, with multiple cuts per seconds editing etc), they saw morons responded positively, so devs are now just mindlessly shoving this unreadable braindead mess into every game even if it's just lowest common denominator pandering, and the end result is shit like a complete disconnect between what market testing tells devs, and what real audiences actually enjoy, thus leading to suicide squad being played by 400 people despite having paid off all the reviewers

no one is making this because they think it's "fun", they're purposefully just chasing trends based on milking the most money off the most easily manipulated of consumers, it's so predatory and cynical and ruining the industry at large

video games are a massive investment and need a decent ROI to be worthwhile, so they cast a wide net to make more money.
books can be written basically for an authors own self fulfillment and a few people out there somewhere will enjoy it enough for the author to be reimbursed enough.

            Anonymous

This explains why the only good games these past few years have been indie games.

              Anonymous

              in a way
the reason indies are good lately is because AAA has stagnated, with the market downturn studios are making safer bets (rehashes, franchise titles, remasters) so everythings boring - these games are also really expensive now for the average joe.
indies by comparison are cheap and usually try to have some interesting hook or design because they cant match AAA on "quality" so they have to compete on concept.

            Anonymous

Yeah a lone person can write a book on welfare, meanwhile games today need to invest hundreds of people and millions.

If I was hired to invest years of my life into something, I would wish that some thought went into it. Who is it for and how to appeal to them.

          Anonymous

A badly designed book is just a boring read, a badly designed game is unplayable garbage. Play some non AAA jank and you'll understand

            Anonymous

If a book is bad I put it down and read something else. If a game is bad I do the same and play something else. The end result is the same.
