VIIR's entire weapon upgrade system was really well-conceived and executed honestly. You really didn't need conventional leveling up with it in place but of course fans would throw an autistic shitfit if they got rid of it so whatever.

It always surprises me that it ever gets compared to the Crystarium in XIII given that the Crystarium was painfully linear and VIIR's weapons just aren't. I guess it's the visuals. Being able to make Cloud more of a mage type or a crit-focused hitter with the Nail Bat or messing around with Melee Barret is fun. It's a shame that when it comes to Aerith you really can't make her be anything other than some variation of magical attacker.
