>core gameplay is repetitive melee you master in the first 30 minutes
>spell system utterly breaks the difficulty
>story is elder god references without any real story
>there's one uninteresting villain, and he appears over and over and over
>level design best described as primitive and linear
>you'll revisit these primitive levels multiple times over
>and most of the time you're in a claustrophobic corridor that clips with your sword

It is an alright game but is basically a movie with some gameplay thrown in. Nintendo exclusivity really bumps it up a lot. Like if Kuon was a cube exclusive fans would be gushing about it to this day.
The movie has no plot. The corridors are all linear. There are only 3 core enemy types minus the dimensional trappers in the entire game. I'm doing the exact same r-target head attack on the red zombies followed by by body the entire game. Reeeeeeeeeeeeeee
>GOOD THING BAD
yep it's a /vr/ thread
>There are only 3 core enemy types minus the dimensional trappers in the entire game
>not only am i telling that i dislike good games i'm also a pig dick pedo, look at this proof i saved!
amazing thread
And a low quality one. OP sucks at life.
>Why was this recommended exactly?
Because it's great. It's like one of those B movies that despite being a B movie has better and more compassionate writing than AAA movies. Controls are very snappy and intuitive, which couldn't be taken for granted in horror games, stamina system, making your own spells, targeting specific hitzones, sequence breaking, light decision making, unique Lovecraftian story and a grounded premise (grandpa dies in a disturbing way, want to investigate because cops suck), comfy hubworld that's a perfect contrast to the action levels, puzzles actually make sense to be where they are, one of the earlier games with true 16:9, smooth 60 frames and clear Dolby Surround sound with excellent sound design and voice acting. Besides that, the insanity gimmick is obviously just awesome and actually quite creepy or stressful at times, doing "panic horror" much better than whatever Capcom attempted with Dino Crisis and hardly relying on lazy jump scares. It causes a lot of crazy shit to happen or just makes the atmosphere even more chilling and exotic with the Islamic chanting and crazy camera angles
I tried the insanity gimmick for a bit and about the time every other room spawned a fake-out it got extremely tedious
this is a 10 hour game. It has three enemy types. It has Two bosses. It replays the two levels each individually yet progressively longer three times. You will be using the same basic sword or double-handed sword you get five minutes in the entire game. There is one bad guy who appears inexplicably in nearly every single cutscene. There is no story, save ELDER GODS THEY'RE BAAAAAAAAD.
What exactly do """"you"""" mean?
this. it definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea tho
Yeah, when I got around to playing it after seeing it praised for years I was pretty underwhelmed, couldn't even bring myself to finish it.
How is the insanity gimmick stressful when you can easily just cast a spell to cure it?
That’s probably the game’s main flaw tbh. After a certain point you never have to worry about the sanity meter and you won’t get to see the cool insanity stuff unless you do it on purpose.
>This can't be happening!!! Aghhh i'm going insanerino...ahh
I never understood the appeal of this game, it's annoying, clunky and ugly as frick. Pure Redditcore.
>clunky
Now you're just saying stupid things for the sake of it. I assume this is a Snoy fanboy thread. I'm out
I don't know why OP has such a hate boner, but it's a great game with a tight story that serves the gameplay. It's about different people from different times coming together to destroy a great evil. You first only play as a weak nobody and end the game as a spell-using demi-god. RE story is hot fricking trash but it's there to set up the gameplay. I wonder what stick he sat on to make him think he has the authority to call this game shit.
OP is a Punk.
It has a lot of attention to detail in the environments. The cinematic elements and cutscenes were solid. It's a bit of a dull slog but it's decent enough. I probably wouldn't recommend it except as a curiosity. Games worth playing on the GameCube are pretty hard to come by so it's worth a look if you want to play a GameCube game.
what attention to detail exactly are you talking about? The fact that the church had an upstairs?
I distinctly remember some marketing spiel about stained glass windows in a cathedral that were removed because stained glass windows weren't contemporary to the setting. Something like that. But they did a lot of research for each environment and setting and tried to make everything historically accurate and authentic.
Because it's good. Maybe it's not yours but aspects of it that do nothing for you can do a lot for others. I know autists have problems understanding that not all humans are the same but c'mon
Commit suicide
that's racist
Actually the story is good & almost makes the reused levels completely fine and acceptable. Almost.
*grabs page*
>PIOUS AUGUSTUS.... AND THE ELDER GOD????
>random timeline skip
>rando protag appears
>PIOUS AUGUSTUS????
okay, time to do an hour of tunneling past red zombies to get to the next cutscene...
>PIOUS AUGUSTUS?????
>to be continued, next chapter...
RE is worst.
All Roivas Manor & Cathedral chapters are kino, Cambodian Temple is generally okay, Persian temple sucks.
I felt like the Cathedral was on par with the Persian temple personally. Manor later missions were about as good as it could get
The jungle area with the Allan Quatermain rip-off is really fun.
That monk level with the mace is not.
Alex is hot and that adds to it. She’s a late 90s era classic bleached blonde.
This is one of the best games on the GC.
I feel you, OP. Survival horror is my favourite genre and I've put up with some real /vr/ turds just to scratch that Resident Evil/Silent Hill itch. Eternal Darkness is honestly one of the worst I've played, not as bad as Rule of Rose though.
>Three enemy types repeated throughout the game.
>About 3 different levels (4 including the mansion hub) that are repeated in extremely uninteresting ways.
>Story is absolutely paper thin and absolutely nails the repetition of it. It's just pure drivel that seriously falls short of a cool premise.
>Walk into room, get sanity drained, do execution animation on enemies, re-fill sanity. Walk into room, repeat for entire game. Cool.
>Combat is so boring but at least the magic system lets you cheese your way through it.
>Mind-numbing corridor level design.
>Eldritch city under the mansion seems exciting and memorable but ultimately its just doing a bunch of "challenge" rooms in a very bland environment.
>Game forces you to replay that entire segment almost back to back, with only Michael's level (ANOTHER trip to the tombs) to break it up.
>3 different elder gods to go with, all are boring and the ultimate ending is still unsatisfying.
Yeah, I have no fricking clue why this game is so beloved. These are all very genuine criticisms but no one can ever answer why the its worth slogging through all this dogshit to experience the decent atmosphere and interesting sanity effects (which are great).
The GameCube is one of my favourite systems of all time but I really do feel as though this would be thought of as a 6.5/10 with neat ideas but bad execution if it were on Xbox or PS2.
The game was developed and 90% completed for the N64 in late 1999. Since it was going to require an expensive high capacity cartridge and they wanted more launch games for the upcoming GC, Nintendo had the developer scrap what they had and make it for GC instead.
I'm sure they just mostly reused the assets they had, which is why the game is so clunky and looks kinda like a ps1 game.
When the 64DD crashed and burned, most of the games that were planned around it were shelved for the disc based gamecube >RE 0, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Gauntlet DL, to name a few
OP is a fa-oh wait, I'm not on Ganker, why is there a Ganker thread in /vr/?
i liked it tbh. felt very fresh after 5 samey resident evil games with fixed cameras and tank controls
Some people enjoy things weird I know you could literally condense every single video game into being bad if you think about it enough like an autist.
Here's the (you) to your bait thread, don't spend it all in one place anon.
Zoom zoom bait thread. You weren't around when the game came out and there were all kinds of rumours about this crazy game that would delete your data and shut off your console. It's the kind of thing that could only work in a world where everyone wasn't permanently glued to the internet.
All people remember about it are the sanity effects and mystery surrounding the game. The actual gameplay experience is quite mediocre.
The spell system is pretty memorable and unique. Like that other anon said, I think the game would’ve been broader in scope if it hadn’t started out as an N64 title. Shame we never got a next gen sequel.
Because its a nintendo exclusive and that automatically makes it a masterpiece for tendies
>Why was this recommended exactly?
The gamecube has no games and they have to hype mediocre shit like this or PN03
