Universal Games was a horrible publisher that had no ability to manage their own properties and maintain quality after the PS1 era. Almost every developer that worked under them hated it.

Nothing that out of the ordinary. Universal Interactive was the story of the usual corporate greed that only cared about bottom line profits, but was too shortsighted to understand that quality>quantity and maintaining a brand will often net you more money in the long run. They put tight deadlines and low budgets on developers to get as much work for as cheap as possible. Naughty Dog and Insomniac just happened to be so talented during the PS1 days that they actually succeeded despite having Universal make things as difficult as possible.
Universal of course merged with Vivendi which was then later bought by Activision which is now owned by Microsoft.

Remember, Microsoft was allowed to buy Activision-Blizzard-King under the specific argument that they're dead last in the console wars, they don't know what to do with any of the IPs and studios they buy, and there's so many studios out there and so many self-publishing options that Microsoft could buy out all the legacy companies they want and not only would they probably run it straight into the ground, but they wouldn't really impact "video games" as a whole in doing so.

The studio got a paralyzing terror of being perceived of as immature when the PS2 was out and never recovered, plus basically all the people that actually like videogames doesn't work there any more, and there's just a bunch of hollyweird rejects.
Roll this into the fact that game award shows are nepotistic garbage and you have a game studio in a terrible situation that will never honestly evaluate the absolute fricking state of their games.
That being said Crash didn't really fade into irrelevancy, it had two pretty severely unfinished games that people generally agree technical issues aside are good, a decent Kart Racer, an acceptable platformer/kart racer hybrid, pretty decent handheld platformers, and a sort of spin off sort of mainline set of games that were too far of a departure for people to really like "as Crash games" but are alright on its own metrics.

        >only reason people these days like it is to larp "how good it could have been" when the game is just garbage
It's okay. I've actually hated it when I first tried it, everything felt so different compared to the original trilogy and every small detail like instakilling nitros, no boxes as a collectible and moronic gems throughout the levels were annoying. Hell, even music felt off and for a good reason. But then it clicked somehow. And yeah, it is a mediocre game at the end of the day. However, it has heart and it makes Twinsanity an enjoyable (albeit flawed) experience. I loved the humor and music the most. No nostalgia here, I got back to it in 2013 and only then I loved it.

Anon, please stop being so silly.
You can admit that a game has positives and negatives. I can completely understand why the box placement shit and the most frustrating 100% is an instant drop for most people, it was for me sure. Crash games was always fun to 100%(well Crash Bash is another thing), so seeing an annoying box placement frick up a good game is frustrating. The %boxes for gems being implemented should've rang some warning bells for devs, because compared to earlier level-Crash games it
                >Made breaking all boxes feel not as satisfying because you got 2 gems already from just breaking some of the boxes
                >Made gems not feel special
N.verted levels are shit. You can't defend them.
Flashback tapes are fun challenges, and should've replaced the perfect run tokens.
Tawna wasn't as bad imo, but can understand the dislike
Crash personality and looks were better than n.sane trilogy.
Coco personality was better, but looks were bad.
                N.Tropy was excellent.
Mixed feelings about Cortex, but OG and especially Twinsanity is hard to beat.
Gameplay itself was excellent. Story was nice.
Woah meme part will age like milk, please don't include memes in your games. Please. They will always age.

Crash Rumble fricked everything. No PC port especially fricked it all.

Ok, N.Sane design was off in certain poses and with some of the face expressions but mostly it was pretty close to the OG design (Switch version without a fur shader looks even better, lol). But Crash 4 design looks like a generic anthro furry shit without even a trait of the same attitude and confusionfear in his eyes. gays claiming Crash was always supposed to be le wacku loony tunes character need not apply.

What's the genral consensus of this game im on the fence of getting it since it's supposed to be a crash indie clone

I've been wanting to try this one. Looks like it has a mix of Crash and Spyro 1 aesthetics going on. But I'm not sure about the music I've heard in the trailers and gameplay videos.

                >Art direction
You'd have to redo all the lighting in all the levels and add highlights to shit. The depth perception problem is a big one. Crash Compactor comes to mind where you can't see the Flamethrowers in the back cause the whole level is stained red thus you can't see the very Red flamethrowers in the background.

well I know there were a lot of people who took issue with Tawna's new design, but there's a bunch of different character model mods for her

I don't have any big gripes with it. But some levels that go to far into the cartoony territory (specifically a festival-themed one with weird blocks and skellies) irk me somewhat. I dunno, I always thought Crash has leaned into realism with light fantasy elements when it comes to the environment.

                Anonymous

The problem with the cartoony artstyle ironically is the cartoony aspects. The art director wanted to make a cartoon but didn't take into account how some of those aspects would effect gameplay.

Something you'll note is the lack of straight lines in much of the design. This is intentional (a detail stolen from Rick & Morty oddly enough) and VERY VERY BAD in a platform game. Because you can't mentally judge distance properly, the player will consistently fail at jumps with little understanding why.

"Why can't I see things properly?"
                "Cause everything is distorted"

                >too cartoony
crash has always been a tex avery cartoon inspired character.
they went out of their way to give him as many cartoonishly expressive animations as possible, he was always sillier than Mario or Sonic. Crash 4 is just a continuation of that

                Anonymous

There's a difference between Tex Avery and Rick & Morty. The older Looney Tunes cartoons weren't full of curved distorted backgrounds. That's also besides the point.

Look at the background. Look at how its all squiggly lines. They tried doing this for Crash 4 and it was a giant mistake. The player cannot judge distance like this.

To put it another way, they chose the wrong art style for a platform game.

                Correct
                >Crash 4 is just a continuation of that
                Incorrect

IAT fundamentally misunderstands the Crash aesthetic and the radical redesign doesn't fit a tex avery/warner bros cartoon in the slightest because it removed all the unique design elements of the crash aesthetic and it's character cast and turned them into generic cartoon cookie cutter templates you see in modern cartoons while also including elements from their other awful redesigns like the Titans ones like Cortex having a rounded head instead of the sharp and angular one which is part of what makes his design iconic

Like the other anon you replied to mentioned, levels like Off Beat are proof that TfB doesn't understand the Crash art style at all. At no point in the main crash games are there these weird face blocks in pic rel that look like something you'd see from Mario or even Rayman, ideas like these should never have made it past the concept stage if you're trying to make a game that's authentic to the long established Crash art style

The art design in IAT becomes even more egregious because the game's supposed to have an alternate dimension theme but many of the levels just reuse themes we've already seen from previous games like Warped (which makes any Crash fan immediately recognize the similarity which is also the reason why people bring it up and talk about it in the first place), and the levels that actually do have a new theme, stand out in the most horrible ways because they don't fit Crash whatsoever

I think whoever designed the character missed the memo that Fake Crash was originally just a funny bootleg Japanese Crash plushie turned into an easter egg character with oversize teeth, eyebrows and tiny eyeballs to make him look appropriately goofy and instead went full ham on the wacky, disgusting circus freak look. Fake Coco is a similar sort of eyesore rather than just being Coco with buckteeth and big eyebrows.

                >Do you think we need any other mods to make IAT even better?
For IAT you need to fix: the moveset physics, polar controls are still worse than previous games even with the patch, lighting and shadows needs to be improved, Aku masks need to stay with the player through levels etc

Impossible to fix the art style + story, best you can do is character swap mods

I'd also add teleporter crates after the rail sections (or remove this cancer altogether, it doesn't mesh with Crash gameplay at all). It'd be great to change extra characters' movesets and levels as well. Tawna's scripted wall jumps feel terrible, it'd be better to have jumping blocks and other things that'd feel more organic.

unpopular opinion but I actually liked all the extra shit to do. for months any time I felt like playing the game again i would hop back in and i'd always have something new to unlock. i think that's what they were going for when they included all those "filler" challenges. people these days are too hung up on completionism. games are meant to be fun not rote tasks to be solved one by one

Extra content like the tapes are good. Hiding a box through a level or making platinums mandatory is not good. All that this method does is make the player never want to play your game ever again while i could always replay 1-CTR + Twinsanity because they are so persistant on wasting time.
It's not the ammount of content thats the problem, it's the fact the content is just unfun at the expense of the player ruining the pacing of levels

This is a huge step on the right direction but the level design is still bad. Eternal levels full of points of no return.
Also the dynamic music is cancerous compared to the originals which had much more presence in the levels.
Game is just fricked. But this is definitely the best way to enjoy it

I know and those are GOOD changes mind you, but that won't fix the entire game being composed of cold hard crash clones instead of having every other level be a shorter more densely packed stage like previous games. Those kind of levels are needed to let the bigger levels breathe and keep the pace of the game going.
Replay crash 2 or 3 and note how many levels on a single warproom actually are long and how many are quick breathers. There's science behind this.

This kind of game needs this type of pacing to not be stressful to play through in a single session.

Jesus frick, the more I read this thread the more aggravating shit I remember. The minions-tier designs and generic music included. Honestly, the only time I had this happy feeling of playing a Crash game was during a snow level and only because the music was a remix of the old Crash 2 tracks and the enemies were mostly obj_motherfrickers. But then again, this level ends with a Polar sequence, so it all goes to shit quite fast.

The music is just so bad. And every single time you die it has to play a dynamic jingle that completely takes you out of the action. I hate that so much, it dilutes what's already a lackluster soundtrack into annoying territory.

Crash 4 sequel just not padded to hell. N.Verted mode is not necessary, length of the levels shortened to what they were in 1-3, the amount of gems can be tuned down to Crash 1-3 amounts. They can frick off with the ridiculously hidden crates too and have it more like the original trilogy. Keep things like Coco, costumes, no MSX, hardcore medals, optional challenges like the tapes.

Of course doing this will make the game only a few hours long, but that's fine. Just charge less for it.

Zoomie need a "reason" or "motivation" for playing games now, when it used to just be enough for a game to be fun with its gameplay. It's also a psyop to make people pay for their games so that they feel they "earned" the achievements and make gaming platforms into social media so they can show off their achievements (that nobody will ever fricking care about, everyone wants to show them off and literally nobody cares to look at other people's)

Naughty Dog never owned the franchise, Universal did, so when Naughty Dog became a first party studio for Sony they left Universal behind and, as such, the Crash license. Universal then fused with Travellers Tale which made them the designated shitting studio for Crash. TT made Wrath of Cortex which got shit reviews but sold a frick ton, then made Twinsanity which I think did the polar opposite, then a year later Lego Starwars comes out and yeah...

      >Universal then fused with Travellers Tale which made them the designated shitting studio for Crash.

I don;t think this happened. It was the French company Vivindi that was buying up game studios through stock ownership, and they purchased Universal Interactive and just farmed out development to Travellers Tales. At that point Travellers Tales already had a reputation for doing the two Sonic games for Sega. Pretty sure Travellers Tales stayed independent until they were bought out by WB Interactive.

    >How did that happen?

Universal Interactive owned Crash, not Naughty Dog. The character was more or less on loan to Sony as their PS1 mascot. Universal Interactive was purchased by Vivindi. Vivindi was later overtaken by a Activision/ Blizzard merger. Activision-Blizzard was purchased by Microsoft. So now Crash is technically a Microsoft property.

You're just splitting hairs now. If you can't move forward, you'd just be jumping in place. Which means you wouldn't BE interacting with the game world.
