Croc

There's something incredibly soulful and pure and wholesome about this game that is not present in other 3D platformers...

Don't you think?

Its greatest weakness it's its greatest strength:

The other platformers have like 10 very unique expansive levels that feel like giant playgrounds you spend a lot of time in.
In Croc you have like 50 levels that are fairly linear so it does make it feel a lot more like a long giant journey. The downside is that they may not be as tightly designed and unique. Everybody who plays Croc can tell there's a grass island, an ice island, a desert island and a castle island but not much beyond that as each particular level is not as distinctive and they blend in with each other.

The other thing is the lack of irony. No zany mascot with attitude dropping one liners trying to be cool, just an innocent childlike crocodile rescuing cute creatures. Despite this sometimes the backgrounds are surprisingly dark and the music is surprisingly solemn or even sad which makes for an interesting atmosphere that incites wonder.

I just think being a crocodile that looks like a dinosaur is a lot cooler than being a man with a moustache. Look at this damn cover, it wouldn't surprise me it's the main reason the game sold so fucking much. Who wouldn't want to be that happy little fellow?

I loved this game. I had the PC version and never had any problem playing with its tank controls. I never thought it was superior to Mario 64 or Crash, but it was still a game I really loved. And I still think the Ladybug boss stage being a boxing ring was amazing.

Lol. Just lol. Nint themselves did superfx and experiments with 3d Mario that turned into Mario 64. The Brit company made a super fx demo for a 3D Yoshi game but Nintendo did want it. They then turned that into Croc. No way that Nintendo got the idea for something they were alreadyexperimentig on.

      based and factual

“We had this long-term partnership with Nintendo and we wanted to do a 3D platform game for them because no one had done one,” San recalls, “We invented that.” Argonaut doubted that Nintendo would give them permission to use Mario, so they decided to use Yoshi instead. They designed a game called Yoshi Racers, and “showed it to Miyamoto and he loved it and thought it was amazing. And then said: ‘No’.”

Interestingly enough, San recalls that “what we showed them looked a lot like what they did later for Mario 64.” Following Nintendo’s release of the game, San ran into Miyamoto at a show where he said, “Sorry we didn’t end up doing that game with you, but thank you for giving us the direction for Mario 64.”

If this game came out a year earlier it would be impressive. Like tomb raider 1. But what's the point when crash bandicoot and Mario 64 are already out. I give it a 5/10. It's just very primitive in execution

My sister and I rented Croc as little kids when we still talked to each other. Mom let us pick 1 game each to rent and she picked Croc. I watched her play and it was really peaceful and beautiful. She started acting weird soon after and we grew distant. She tried to kill herself recently. I miss my dysfunctional-but-happy family life.

yes. I think it's the art direction. it's much more cohesive than most early 3d games. sm64 is a much better game, but it looks like a tech demo, with its mishmash of themes and the barely-past-the-blockout-stage level geometry where they slapped on whatever textures they found in the sample gallery of their 3d modelling software

and then there's the music. very soulful

funny, it actually could have been decent, but they just completely disregarded the original art direction i guess. the differences in the colors used in the new one really ruins the look

If they fix the controls would they need to modify levels at all to fit the new control scheme?

Since the game is all about carefully positioning yourself to jump on little floating circles, you really just need a button you can hold down to lock croc into place so you can turn him into position. Or even better if a controller has analog triggers, those would be great for it. Then I start to think about how great those gated Nintendo sticks would have been for croc, to lock your forward movement perfectly straight

Is it me or did we not actually get enough high quality 3D platformers in retrospect? If you really think about it I would argue we didn't get enough truly excellent ones. After the fifth gen the genre started to lose appeal pretty fast as more and more people who grew up with gaming were tired of the so called kiddy shit and wanted to move on to so called real games for real mature gamers. So we got games like Jak, Ratchet, Sly for Playstation. Nintendo obviously gave us Sunshine. Microsoft gave us some forgotten slop like they always do. Its clear though the genre didn't make quite the transition to the 6th gen too well. By the 7th gen the genre was practically entirely dead with only really Nintendo keeping it relevant in any way thanks of course to Mario. I'd argue that Sony may have had the best approach actually by trying to make edgier 3D platformers that can still be child friendly but at least provide some more substance that a teen or adult could maybe get into.

Point is we always hear all about SM64, Banjo, Spyro, Crash from the retro years. Sometimes the others like Croc. Games like Glover are usually seen as a novelty at best. But then after this it mostly just becomes Mario Mario and more Mario. I don't think the genre ever really peaked as it should have. And if it did according to some of you guys then it sure as hell wasn't noticed much in the later gens. Nobody talks about games like i-ninja for example although I seen a video where he called the game very underrated. Seems like something about 5th gen made the genre stand out more idk.

I played Croc for maybe 10 to 20 minutes on a friend's Saturn a few years ago. Croc is cute and the game seems to have lots of soul. I'm a yuge RE fan and love tank controls, but I feel the use of them in a 3D platformer is questionable. Maybe though if I played longer they would have grown on me.
