We don't have a clue of what exactly Baldur's Gate III is. Those that pay attention to comics and other outside lore, as well as interviews, can see from a mile they're setting up something related to CHARNAME. Every single Origin/party member is directly named in the datamines, except one - "The Kid".

                Based 4e Chad.

I will always be disappointed that there's no proper 4e video game. The shitty Neverwinter MMO doesn't count since it doesn't use any of 4e's mechanics. 4e would've been perfect for a turn-based RPG or even a full-blown tactics game. Regardless of whether or not you like it as a tabletop game most of the common complaints are moronic and its actual flaws are far easier to fix than 3.5e's flaws, but that aside, for a video game it's objectively better than 3.5e and by extension 5e as well since that's mostly just a braindead clone of 3.5e.

    >what's this? A Pentiment thread?
    >aww yis.
    >enter thread.
I literally can't talk enough about Pentiment but to get to you question OP, I don't think whatever game this is can in anyway compare to the sheer brilliance that is Pentiment. The game is so packed full of deep intellectual concepts that I'm surprised there's even a large enough following for P (Pentiment) that threads about it to appear. Not that I'm complaining :).
P (Pentiment) has one of the deepest and well thought out gameplay in any game I've ever played. It's cut through all the rooty tooty point and shooty "gameplay" (that other games waste their time on) and gets to the real meat of any game.... the story. I truly can't express how how shocked I was (well I can, I lived through the "trump years") that there are people who don't like P (Pentiment). It's probably just their preconceived notions on what a "game" has to be. These same people probably also have antiquated ideas about women, race, and religion as well. So in short most detractors of this game are incels.
    >end rant.

Disco Elysium and this new Pentiment game are just glorified books with skill checks put in to determine which page you turn to. They are not rpgs because they lack a core element of a rpg, gameplay.

Why are people talking about playing Pentiment when Steam says it's not out until November? Is there a pre-release copy you can play somewhere? Hadn't heard of it before but game looks sick

Rpgs with out gameplay are just books. No one wants to play a book. They want to play roleplaying games. Those rpgs you talk about wouldn't be remembered if they did not have gameplay to get people invested into to the story.

No. They could have been the best books ever written and it still wouldn't change the fact that they are not game. The problem is that they were labeled "games" as a way to sell them to d&d nerds in the 80s not that they were actual games. It was just a marketing gimmick to sell books to d&d nerds.

Everyone considers them games anon. It’s interesting to see much of the crpg audience, like yourself, devolve so much these days that they only know about video games. You and them seem completely rootless and without knowledge of the Tabletop and history that spawned the video games, only being aware of DnD because of Baldur’s Gate.

Let's not kid ourselves: balanceman is a cheap corner cutter
If you can dazzle the kids with hipster rhetoric you can make unfinished games with shitty ship combat or even a VN and they'll buy it because the wokeshit era gave everyone stockholme syndrome.

In prior eras the one man band developer could compel you with cutting edge everything, now not so much because he's just putting a bad twist on roads well traveled instead of being able to cut a new path through the digital wilderness (which is now a George Floyd sanctuary suburbian dog park anyway).
