You say that but one of the most common complaints about MMOs is the MM part. Lots of people are desperate to play thr game solo and it's one of the most commonly asked questions prospective new players want to know. I've made almost no progress in Stormblood because I was so used to duty support giving me AI companions. Frick playing with other people. I've had homosexuals kick me out of a dungeon because I got a cutscene and didn't want to wait for me to finish it. The second they realised this was my first time I was booted.

But almost everything there is to do in GW2 becomes available at 80? I think it's the only game with horizontal progression that's been around as long as it has, there's so much fricking stuff to do at 80 if you haven't been playing the game for 10 years like me (and I haven't actually done everything myself, because I'm a gigacasual who will never, ever beat harvest temple CM).

GW2 suddenly becomes boring at 80
            Enjoy the ride

The entire game opens up at level 80, you can do whatever you want. If anything it's the other way around: there's so much stuff you -can- do, it's overwhelming for a completely new player.

Literally none of my friends are playing it which is weird since it's the first time I've had less than 50% of my friends trying a new expansion and now it's just straight up 0.

Yeah, everyone hates the game all of a sudden. People are way too critical towards WoW in my opinion: they get bored after a few months because they don't have anything to do anymore, but instead of quitting they keep playing and playing until they are completely sick of it.

If you're bored, just unsub and wait for new content? I don't understand why everyone's so obsessed with spamming the same dungeons and raids over and over and over for a chance of a +2% stronger weapon. If you're bored, quit: of course the game becomes a miserable experience if you don't play anything else for months.

Classic proved the game has always been like this. FF14 and every other themepark MMO is the same, even Yoshida itself said it: quit and come back whenever you want. Do WoW players need someone else to tell them when they're bored?

WoW (and to a lesser extent other gear treadmill games like FFXIV) punish players hard for not playing constantly. Weekly lockouts, daily grinds, constantly increasing gear power, etc, all mean if you aren't on the grind, you fall behind, or at least it fosters a feeling that you do. It's part of the sub fee business model, they need to make players *feel* like they should be constantly logging in, and in game systems do.

                Anonymous

                >gear treadmill games like FFXIV

The gear treadmill in FFXIV is an illusion when every raid patch comes with its own set of crafted gear. It's only there to help casuals clear the current raid tier.

                Anonymous

Yes, but why do people care so much. "Oh no, I'm behind, now I'll only be able to beat Mythic+18 instead of +19! My life is ruined!" And the power level gets soft-reset each major patch anyway, and completely reset at the start of each expansion.
I make completely new characters each expansion, and after 10-15 hours of leveling I'm at the same exact power level as Asmongold. Nothing you do in WoW is meaningful in any way, nothing "sticks", what's considered BIS now will become garbage in a year. Just play the content, have fun and get out.

If you need to be guided by the nose, try WoW or FFXIV. Certain cities are going to be more populated than others. You can engage in trade, go to the Cantina and get buffs or socialize, you can pick up a profession like BH and hunt players. There is no real questing, the world is built by players, you have to go out there and discover shit and try to make friends. If that's too difficult to comprehend then maybe you should just go play Skyrim and sit in discord.

This never works and there is a reason these MMOs are dead today, they only worked back then because they were the only ones on the market at the time. Doing open world pvp leads to one group snowballing with little chance of other groups retaliating. No amount of "getting good" will change this because gear almost always dictates your potential in MMOs and not actual mechanical skill. 0 people want to deal with the 500 poopsocking autists that control the servers. Everyone who wants open world pvp says that because they happened to join said snowballing group or happened to start playing before other people did and had a time advantage. I guarantee those same people would be shitting their diapers and be the first ones crying on the forums if an open world pvp MMO came out next month and they got mogged by the inevitable streamer simp guild that would steamroll the server

posted is correct. MMOs are an insanely expensive game to not just develop but to support. The only way any established company would be willing to make one is for the game to function as an mtx vehicle. Unless a studio is willing to take on that risk and the game comes out which is a true MMO based on a subscription model, AND manages smashing success the way WoW did, no studio will ever touch the genre because it's financially infeasible.

I'm looking to the indie dev scene to produce the next good MMOs that don't play like they're cut from the same old Standard Model of Proven Profitability for Video Game Product that is prevalent. They have the leeway to take that kind of risk, and the general jadedness which people seem to have for larger and more established dev studios leans in their favor.

A waste of cool character designs, they should just wrap up the moronic 4th paths and repackage it as an offline beatemup. Same with Closers.
      Also Koikatsu isn't an MMO.

        Anonymous

The characters in the koikatsu screenshots are from an MMO, so technically it fits the criteria. I can agree that all the female designs are literally elder god tier but the charm for them is to stay online.
Frick Closers tho, no korean MMORPG has killed Elsword at all.

          Anonymous

Elsword has killed itself, and Closers is actually more fun to play. Also I absolutely fricking love the character selection menu in Closers.
It also helped that the events to get promo costumes in it were MUCH more common, nor did it frick with base hair on promotions at all. ElsKR just went and ruined CH with that shitty uniform, and even though I had the CH promo in my wardrobe, I didn't have the hair (in part my own frickup but still). Ultimately I got sick of this shit in both games, so I don't play either of them anymore.

            very alive

Those 3 Black folk are ENOUGH to even satisfy the korean server as well, since it directly feds other KOG games, like DFO and Maplestory.

You have to be insane to still play this screenwipe fest with powercreep that was already excessive over 6 years ago. Closers being younger and having a third dimension helps, although it's obviously heading in the same direction.
There isn't even a point in playing for the designs when the promo sets are still temporary for some fricking reason.

The game is still fun, that's all what it matters. Not a sane mind is trying to just pvp the shit out of it, people actually has to play the game. The grind is NOT AS SHIT as they tried to do with Rigomor in 2018~2020. They lowered a lot of requirements and keep doing events to lower them even further.

The designs are great and people can play barbies or dolls with it, specially with the robutt. Sure some people like me like mostly the original design, but nobody really asks for the regular clothes of the characters, since you can keep the hairstyles if you make an accessory or hair invisible.

how do people enjoy this game? I played it for a tiny bit back in the day in like 2001 but it was complete garbage compared to juggernauts like EQ/UO/DAOC etc, finally decided to really dive into it a month ago and the world is really cool, the old mmo vibe is cool but for the same reason I barely played it back in 2001 the actual gameplay is the worse in the entire genre, it also lacks any meaningful player group content at least for the main core of the game, runescape is not a mmorpg at all, it's on par with dark souls where your on a single player path but you happen to see online players doing shit around aka ghosts who rarely interact with you gameplay wise.

For me, its an RPG that is still playable after you finish the story. Most RPG games, when you finish it, you hit a wall and just quit or kill the superboss/get all ending then quit. MMO last as long as the server is up and you still get to play your characters. Customization is also important and MMO tend to have a higher level of customization of character creating and building than your typical MMO.

osrs is good in that it attracts socially crippled spergs so you get to semi-regularly experience awkward but rewarding social exchanges that end as quickly as they started. similar mmos have fallen into the trap of not having a grand exchange so they become discord games with tons of mandatory social interaction that occur completely independent of what happens in the game.

not sure about the wipe but gorgon is pretty good if you can look past the shit graphics - there's a lot to explore, there's actual secrets and knowledge feels like it's rewarded, build customization is pretty interesting, socialization is encouraged by the game design, however it is very grindy and a lot of the game revolves around inventory management so you kinda need to have the right type of autism. it goes on sale for $20 sometimes and for that price it's definitely worth it imo, there's a demo you can try too

My problem with MMOs is that thr gameplay is too basic. Even turn based JRPGs tend to introduce nee mechanics and enemies at a good pace to keep things fresh. With MMOs you have your rotation and you just do that ad infinitum. You might as well just use a macro that hits 12345 on your hotbar for you over and over while you focus on movement. Is it really so hard for MMOs to have interesting combat?

shadowbringers is when the story actually gets good but then it gets bad again right after so you're basically just playing for that one expansion
and i'm not sure what content you were trying to do but you generally don't have to worry about content being obsolete, pretty much all of it drops stuff that is useful somehow, the best part of the game is how it keeps old content relevant. endgame gear can be bought off the marketboard or obtained with an hour of grinding a week so you don't really have to think in terms of whether something is effective enough or worth doing

I was leveling beast tribes and botany. Then I was told there's no point when EW has better gathering levies and beast tribe shit means absolutely nothing. I was also trying out gold saucer stuff but apparently something replaces it later or something? No one will tell me what it is though, it's a "surprise" and I should focus on doing story content only to find out. People on the novice network have even told me to not bother raising any other classes and do it later since it would just slow my story progress. So I've been playing monk this whole time and I'm honestly kind of sick of it.

Speaking of which, whats wrong with beast chakra? Multiple people have warned me to not do any job quests after ARR because it will frick up my character or something? I've been told it will make me weaker and just give me more busywork to do to maintain my current DPS so I should save myself the effort and ignore it.

          Anonymous

Monk used to be fun but they fricked it hard post SB, apparently they fixed it again but I don't know I couldn't go back. You won't find out until later since they neuter skills for lower levels so you aren't flooded with 80 skills at end game so anything below like lvl 70 on any class is going to feel dull as frick.

          Anonymous

          >beast tribes
old beast tribes aren't relevant for making gil, sure, but they're a good source of xp, good for levelling crafters (they sell mats you'd otherwise have to buy off the MB for more money) and they drop exclusive mounts/minions/glamour which are really the only rewards worth caring about in the end. if you don't mind the questing there's no reason not to get them done
          >botany
leveling with EW leves is more efficient but who fricking cares, its botany, leveling it is absolutely trivial and can be finished quickly no matter how you do it, you shouldn't hold off on leveling it now just to get 10% more XP/hour at some point in the future
          >was also trying out gold saucer stuff but apparently something replaces it later or something? No one will tell me what it is though, it's a "surprise"
sounds like they're just fricking with you because i have no clue what they could be talking about, gold saucer never gets replaced and its always worth doing because the MGP shop gets new rewards added pretty often
          >People on the novice network have even told me to not bother raising any other classes and do it later since it would just slow my story progress
moronic mindset, unless you have friends who want you to raid with them asap there's zero reason to rush the story, it's not going anywhere. play how you want, forcing yourself to play a class you dislike just to speedrun the story is making the game unfun for yourself for no reason other than minmax autism
also ignore novice network it's a glorified general chat for the absolute biggest spergs in the game and anyone who knows what they're talking about isn't posting in there
          >beast chakra

You are getting shitposted on anon, you should stop listening to whoever is telling you this shit and just do whatever the frick you want instead.

Instead, look at the game like a tree, each expansion is a series of branches that climbs horizontally and vertically, but in the end they lead nowhere, so the only way to get further up the tree and to see more branches is to keep climbing up the base of the tree (The MSQ). Also, if you didn't start having fun/liking the story around the Heavensward expansion, you should just quit since every expansion after is just more of the same but slightly higher quality.

It's mediocre, like I said, it's as if you take modern WoW and cut out about 90% of the stuff that sucks about it. Depending on how much you disliked the stuff that they removed, XIV can swing wildly between a 4/10 to a 8/10 depending on who you ask, but you'd have to like atleast some parts of modern WoW to like XIV in the first place

I don't log in and actually play anymore but I'm still clinging a little because I log in to keep my house. I think if there's no reward for being subscribed for a decade straight (decade from ARR, since they don't count 1.0) I'm gonna finally pull the plug and just leave the game completely.

Nah I just made her brown because almost all of my characters are white.

              what are your gripes?

I'd be here for a while if I listed them all. I think the game needs significant changes to it's design philosophy at this point and possibly even needs another 1.0 to ARR type of just destroying everything and rebuilding the game again.

              Engine
              Combat as a whole
Class design (along with how they keep dumbing down/simplifying everything)
Dungeon and Raid design (everything is the same, I don't want to see another damn hallway or another circle or square platform with a boss in the middle)
Gear being boring as hell and a constant vertical treadmill where the gear you put effort into obtaining becomes worthless in 3-6 months
100% predictable patches that never surprise at all anymore
The actual world being completely pointless aside from taking you from one cutscene to the next during the MSQ
PvP being complete garbage and only done in instances, but that goes hand in hand with the garbage engine and combat in a way. Though I think PvP was at it's best in Heavensward personally, when classes had their actual PvE kits but with some extra flavor and adjustments
Speaking of instances, the game is entirely too instanced. I can't go back to that after Black Desert.

I could list more but I really don't want to spend a chunk of my morning listing my gripes about FFXIV. Though I will add in one more thing and it's that I think their monetization of the game is absolutely disgusting. Charging a subscription, charging for expansions, and then charging for extra shit in their real money cash shop on top of it, PLUS exclusive items tied to overpriced merchandise that ranges from $50-$300 is obscene.

To top it all off, there's no way to get any of this shit in-game with Gil. Meanwhile in BDO you can get a significant amount of what you find on the cash shop directly through the in-game market, and they happen to just give away shit for free all the time during events too.

                Part 2

Square Enix's management is peak stupid and I think they're running the company into the ground. FFXIV being rebuilt from the ground up after coming out as a failure restored my good will with Square Enix and then they just pissed it all away over the years with how moronic they've been. I don't think I'll buy another Square Enix product again after all their bullshit at this point. I don't foresee them redeeming themselves in my eyes again unless there's some kind of miracle at this point.

I do admit I feel bad when I talk shit about FFXIV, because I know some people really love it, and honestly, I really loved it too. I kinda miss how I felt about the game, and the people I grew close with on it. I can't do it anymore though. I'm not gonna continue to put up with their bullshit and doing the bare minimum while fleecing their fans/players.

What MMOs or private servers should I play if I like dungeons (and sometimes BGs and raids)? Preferably games or servers where you can actually play with people while leveling rather everything being at level cap exclusively but I can work with the latter too I guess.

wow is basically the only game where getting into groups with random people is feasible on any level, even on private servers

I used to play LOTRO, any updates on that?

No, the game has been in a perpetual maintenance mode since about a year after F2P happened and even before that the game got content updates at a snails pace. I used to play it while it still had a monthly fee and even if they went back to that I would still find it kind of hard to recommend thanks to the janky combat and PvE design, the monster PvP was a great idea though and it was what kept me playing for about a month after I got a single character to max back in the day. The music and housing systems were also waaaaay ahead of their time and it's pretty funny seeing just how many MMOs have copied those two things wholesale over the years (one of the noteable ones being XIV that just copied both almost exactly like how they functioned in LOTRO)

Finding a Dunes party on Eden is really hard if you play in off-hours. People just run alts and power-level through everything. The grind to 12 is already very tedious so I couldn't be bothered to play anymore and quit.

Currently Wings but it's apparently dying or dead or something, I don't play it but something about a mod meltdown
Like the other guy said, HorizonXI is coming in I think December and it's a no multiboxing allowed server, but it's also going to do some custom balance tuning so people have reason to play other jobs and add custom content and gear with 75 cap horizontal progression in mind
Might be cool if you're down for that kind of thing, I'm really excited about them not using level sync, I fricking hate people sitting in the dunes forever, or above 55 everyone sits at leypoint forever, it's so dull not going from camp to camp

      Anonymous

Is DDO fun if you can't get any friends to play it with you? Can you make friends there?

        Anonymous

You can make friends either by joining a static group or a guild. Since you can control when you level, people often form groups where they level together. Typically, if I look at all the people online sorted by guild, they're all within a couple levels of each other with the exception of those really big guilds. I have a static group I play with for 2 hours every Monday for a couple years, and then I play on/off on both my main character from different server and the temporary perma-death server (which is up right now).

One problem DDO does not have is a lack of people in public groups to play with during the leveling process, thanks to the reincarnation system. You should always be able to find a couple groups in your level range. The issue with this is that those people typically have run those quests dozens or hundreds of times and built up a lot of strength in the characters resulting in them doing the quests on difficulties that are very challenging for you and at paces faster than you could do comfortably. You would want to go into it with a good leveling build and share a lot of "I'm new, please take it a bit easy for me" with groups you join.

I've played RO for like 2 weeks and I'm already sick of it (again).
Now I'm giving OSRS a spin. As a first time player I must say it has the old MMORPG feel/jank, but I can't say the game is good by any measure - especially when they're prodding me to buy a membership every 5 steps.
I even thought about playing WotLK classic, but the thought of giving Activision-Blizzard $15 to play a game I've played to death 15 years ago makes me sick to my stomach, so I'm holding out for now.

Tried to get back to BDO via the season character, but kinda got filtered there, gonna try again next season and delete my existing failed character so I can just focus on one
Been thinking to get back to NGS but I after I got another M2 SSD, playing on HDD sucks and getting BSOD just from playing normally is scary
Been stuck with ToF, and already kinda felt like replacement NGS for me, wish it's just normal mmo though
Waiting for Blue Protocol which is going to be released next year, and with ToF 2.0 being able to backload doing shit at the weekend, ToF would by my secondary MMO

Anon... I have bad news... Nexon is being ultra extra supercaligayoulous moronic... they stop developing on project BBQ and shifted it towards soulslike gameplay, because the morons at Nexon thought we want that...

They don't compare. Played years of TERA and BnS does not play at all like it. Its cool looking, but 10 times easier IMO

What's better, starting in the old levelling zone or new snowy one?

        Anonymous

Depends, if you're a new player first char starting on the old zone is better, but if you make an alt and already familiar with the game the new intro is good for introducing the area (especially if you haven't checked it out yet)

The english private server went down recently: atlus sued the team because someone paid/bribed someone for items or something.

When you realize this kind of corruption is pretty much ubiquitous to private servers is when you realize you need a new hobby.

Weird request, but is there a single player game that imitates MMO grinding experience, willingly or unwillingly?
I recall having fun mindlessly grinding equipment/money/exp, but did not gave a rat ass about social aspects of the mmos. It always felt forced and awkward.

I don't have time for osrs. i don't have shit to do in pso2 ngs. i don't want to force myself into playing ffxiv because of sub. tried getting into gw2 since i owned the base game for several years, it's fun but le horizontal progression is confusing since i just explore the map/do story/trials. gw2 couldn't stick with me unfortunately but it's a good alternative.
