DF Unity is probably the best bethesda game at this point.

It's impressive. DFU, Enderal, and Tamriel Rebuilt are better than neverever troony projects like Beyond Skyrim for sure. Honestly Daggerfall fixed up like this alongside some mods is still more fun than Starfield.

Tamriel Rebuilt is a troony project by the way. One of the lead devs transition then got other devs kicked out for being mean.

I care. Ganker told me you're not allowed to enjoy anything that could be construed as troony-centric. Took me like 3 hours to delete any trace of that mod off of my pc.

this is the real showstopper. no one thinks too much of Daggerfall, but Morrowind, + multiplayer. It's basically the ideal MMO. I real homebase game.

But can I play it without having ot minmax shit to experience thingsl ike in Morrowind relying on magic for a lot of shit or just paying trainers

Like what if I just want to bash shit over the head and use magic as support for outside of combat
is that an option or is there a weird ass leveling system like in Oblivion

You do not need magic. My favourite build has no mana and may not use spells

Does Daggerfall have the same leveling system like Morrowind and Oblivion?
    I have a TES-itch, and Skyrim isn’t fun anymore.

DFU has a superior levellung system but the same bethesda autism which rewards you for speccing back to front.
Skills come in 4 tiers and increases to the skills result in levels but only x skills per tier contribute. Which means your first level = the sum x skills in nth tier. So the lower your initial highest skills in each tier thr higher your level cap.
This is irrelevant unless you are a sperg who likes that shit. The spicy build features are the traits you add - like OG FO perks that perma change your build. You always take damage in holy places? Here is some points you can spend on sword mastery, ect.

You level up by raising your chosen skills but there are no attribute multipliers, you just get a flat 4-6 attribute points upon leveling up. You can savescum to get 6 points every time.

Also forgot to mention that Daggerfall does have level scaling. Not as bad as Oblivion IIRC.

DFU level scalling is good. The gameplay is the progression/narrative. You cannot get certain items until you hit certain levels or you trade for them. It does eventually trivialise certain materials but that's all part of the progression to me. It does not need to go full Morrowind. Or rather, because it lack the proper 'ecosystem' that it was initially intended to have, it cannot go full Morrowind. Operating on all cylinders DF would have factions (including enemies) wax and wane so certain areas are more threatening and you have to willingly seek out that glory and subsequently better loot. If it DID do that I'd be down for perma durability on items to keep the cycle fresh.
        >but muh rare wep
Just have the smith turn broken items into 'x' scraps so you can remake it after you've broken enough. Hell, make scrap an ascending thing so reforging a weapon out of broken scavenged ones gives it +1. I'm all in on that scaling shit.

          Anonymous

Ah, caveat to that. As I said here

DFU has a superior levellung system but the same bethesda autism which rewards you for speccing back to front.
Skills come in 4 tiers and increases to the skills result in levels but only x skills per tier contribute. Which means your first level = the sum x skills in nth tier. So the lower your initial highest skills in each tier thr higher your level cap.

the level cap is fixed. So while you can increase to somewhat ridiculous degrees, unless you are already extremely proficient at the game it's not going to get too out of hand. Moreover, if you ARE proficient at the game then you'd also realise quite a few mechanics are more dependent on level than they are on skill, old school style. So you benefit quite strongly from leveling up. Creatures are also static stat blocks. There's an upper level to them. Once you hit it they can simply just throw more of the best ones at you but nothing you haven't seen. Human enemies will scale but they aren't as naturally ferocious as shit like Liches. There's a bit of Beast->Human->Beast->Human in terms of what is going to be giving you grief. beware the level 2 paralysis spider filter.
If you can get past the level two spider spam you'll be well equipped as a player to take on the rest of the game.

I like traditional roguelikes and fully exploring floors in them, so I think I'll manage.

Then you are in good company. If DF clicks for you it will click hard. Just remember that it's a Crawler/pseudo-blobber first and an everything else second.

I bet we're gonna see the same people shitting on Starfield for having generated content fairly and reasonably apply these same criticisms to this game.

Yeh, maybe you will but that is justified. Todd isnt making a dungeon crawler with an imsim framing mechanic. He's making SkyrimXFallout - and he beefed it.
DF and its goals are incredibly different to SF and its goals. DF's procgen is not to stoke the feeling of discovery and novelty. It's to produce a sense of significance and scope. The immersion isnt from the sites themselves, they are unashamed dungeon crawls and better for it, the immersion is from the context that comes from crawling dynamic living world, where the player is simply a small element.
The tedium of money having weight, the player needing wagons, promisory notes eating into savings all lend to this sense of reality. Modern TES and by extension BSW abhor such ideals. "Say yes to the player" and all that

Morrowind and onwards. Morrowgays will cry about it but Morrowind was when the original BSW staff were run out of the company. Todd stripped down what was, at one stage a proper continuation of Daggerfall. The soul was there and the foundation was built by OG bethesda. In this case making the lore of a proper TES game into a theme park instead of a sandbox was a nice showcase of what made it unique. That's not to say Todd improved anything, it is better to think of Morrowind as Todd's boken clock moment with Oblivion onwards (including the modern FOs and SF) as a notable and steady fall from grace and legitimacy.

        >The tedium of money having weight, the player needing wagons, promisory notes eating into savings all lend to this sense of reality
So instead of being a boring shallow piece of shit, Starfield should have been more boring, more tedious with a ton of worthless simulation detail and it would have been praised for it.

          Anonymous

Yeh. They pussied out of mechanics like fuel.

I really cannot wrap my head around Starfield being so boring and barebones in regards to absolutely everything. No redeeming quality.

      Anonymous

Yeah, I'll be fair. Daggerfall is better than Starfield, even though Daggerfall scuffed even with Unity. You get faction reputations, hundreds of procedural dungeons instead of 40~ ish POI, 100+ towns and cities built off a tile system, customizable character traits & weaknesses, character stats, customizable magic, a main story with an actual fricking conclusion and different endings (one of which turns a guy into a god moon), and religions that kind of matter.

Seriously, all Starfield had to do was create a procedural dungeon system, even if it ran off a damn tile system like warframe, and a quest system that interacted with it. I would have shit on the story but at least been able to enjoy dungeon crawling now and again.

tell me DFanons, what's the appeal? what does it do differently from other Bethesda games? how could it's formula be improved?

      Anonymous

The formula could easily be improved by increasing the world reactivity and intractivity. The game, as it exists has stuff like faction allegiences and wars in the code but unused. It needs more of that. It needs more operations that exist outside the player's influence. A good example of this would be the Roguetech mod for Battletech. Thats a game that has inherited some of Daggerfall's energy namely, pure mechanics (tactics battles/dcrawling respectively) and an absolute scope that the player is party to not author of.
What distinguishes DFU from RT is the personal perspective and immersion. As I said before, its not about map painting indispersed with intense niche gameplay, its the restrictions and oppurtunities that come with being a fully autonomous person within that world that distinguish it from, say, mountainblade where the player is quickly lost in the hustle becoming an avatar for the player to affect the world rather than an actual character who lives in a town and has their own life

How glitchy is this compared to the original?

Also are the dungeons and npc quests less nonsense?
I remember the original having plenty of dungeons that were insanely large even for the most basic quest.

You can literally disregard the main quest, subsequently fail it and never know. It is designed to allow you to do exactly that

        Anonymous

Wonderful, I was conveniently laid off at end of last year so it'll suit the NEETing well as long as it lasts.

          Anonymous

It's a good NEET option - assuming one thing. Are you the kind of guy who needs to walk down corridors to fill out the map even if you know it's a dead end? I am and as you might have seen with some popular images, this means I get a lot of time out of Daggerfall.
Sadly, due to proc gen not every dungeon is going to be full explorable, especially if your build lacks movement options like levitate or recall (in case you teleport somewhere you cannot return from - but if you do just console back).
Honestly I kinda dig that it fricks with me like that. Adds to the tedious immersion. If you walk in and realise it's filled with water or half the dungeon is up a shaft you just have to eat shit (this rarely ever happens, there's usually a hidden door, lever or portal that will sort it out)

you shouldn't abandon the mainquest though, it's on a schedule and you should periodically engage with it as you do all your sidefrickingoff in the maintime, that's the optimal Daggerfall experience. if you fail the mainquest then you can never do it.

  24. 4 months ago

i never played this but isn't the game so large that basically everything looks the same and you don't really get immerse yourself cause you can't even remember the places you've been or memorable characters?
