I get being okay with the story changes, but that some people seem completely unable to blame that for the poor performance is weird. It's always PS5 (which is moot, because 16 outsold it), it being a sequel (also moot, because Spiderman 2 which was also PS5 only), and covid (which is a self defeating argument, because then you're admitting that Remake OVERsold). If you make a good product, people will buy it. They didn't, so Rebirth became a bargain bin / PS Plus game

I mean this is your answer right here anon. Those "several story choices" were extremely polarizing. Do this experiment: take ANY other IP that got a remake, and inject some new element that allows for the creation of new timelines / worlds, dead characters now involved once more, etc, and especially when that was NEVER part of the original world and tone, and see how bonkers it becomes. 7 seems to get away with it more because its a fantasy game, but if you take a step back and look at what they did, it's a huge tonal shift from the original game. You can't just go "oh btw multiple alternate realities are totally a thing now because lifestream" and expect it to just land normally for everyone. But apart from that issue, the products have extremely poor pacing and genuinely boring sections that sour the overall experience a lot if you weren't already bought into it. I was onboard with them doing a trilogy, but Remake and Rebirth could've easily been one game with some brutal edits and cuts in retrospect. The games aren't complete disasters, but nothing Remake did would make Rebirth feel like a day one purchase anymore for a lot of folk

This brought back ATB ideas, classic MP based magic (which have been absent from the mainline single player games since 12), the materia system, other classic FF stuff.

Look anyone who understands anything about game design knows that FF7Rs 'ATB' Mechanic is nothing like Classic ATB.
-One is a timer that counts upward until it reaches its max, Your character can not attack or do literally anything until the timer is up.
-The other is not a timer but a resource meter like many other action/fighting games. You build meter by attacking and spend meter on special moves.
Needing to spend meter on using items is uncommon because most games limit items in other more logical ways. but other than that this new "ATB" is just a generic Meter like you'll see in countless other action games.
