The main story ended with Seekers, but they still have side expacs.
The Main Story of XI as a whole ended in 2015 with Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, the expansion after The Voracious Resurgence is a post-script Epilogue that wrapped up loose ends and close certain doors.
It's currently in a quite literal maintainence mode as they have stopped creating new content all together and are just cycling monthly content.
XI never had a "main" story in the sense XIV does.
Each expansion was it's own story and you could do them in any order.
When the game was winding down, they did a story scenario that tied all the stories together as one final hurrah for everyone to close the game out with.
Structure wise with the reveals CoP definitely comes after RoZ

Tural looks so boring like a hybridization of Thanalan and Thavnair with a bit of Azim Steppe, I don't have positive feelings about another limited job seeing as Blu already barely exists, and the graphics update highlights were so fricking abysmal man.

But I'd hope for at least something more personal and direct, something lower stakes like a national conflict or direct intrigue for the cast, and hoped they wouldn't jump right back to fricking megadeath ancient technology weapons yet again
They really should have grown some balls and left the Scions out of this one. Erenville and the WoL and maybe Krile would've been enough and a better path in my opinion.

I love how everyone memed the frick out that Scholar skill and it turned out to be pretty fricking broken.
Everyone that actually plays the game knows that an extra sprint you can give to the whole party is really good, but the whole point is they barely give a shit about SCH thematically and really don't know what else to do with it.
Scholar had a theme. They just ripped it out of them when they had to make all the healers exactly the same.
Reminder that out of all of these abilities, the Scholar one is the only one they had to nerf for being too powerful in raids.
This is the shit I hate about scholar, it's extremely unfun to play in comparison to the other healers but what it does is so incredibly effective so it won't get touched by the QoL stick. Lustrate is an outdated skill, aetherflow is just dismal when sage gets the more flexible 20s charge time, dissipation affects exactly 2 spells and STILL encourages people to use it for dps.

Like straight up constant movement, little downtime despite how many of you consider GCDs a cardinal sin, bosses are designed like wannabe action-lite. It's not GW2 or some other MMOs out there, but anyone who thinks XIV is slow doesn't know shit.
It's considerably less responsive than WoW, though they have taken measures to improve that with the latest expansions. The game's responsiveness is ultimately shafted by netcode and animation locks, and you can specially tell at the start of new patches when NoClippy/XivAlexander are disabled.

I've been playing since just before the lev update in 2.1. I don't really login anymore because there is nothing to do. I don't really care about raiding since most of the gear is ugly as frick and I don't like having to show up at a certain time to play a video game like being in a bowling league. I don't care about the other content like the island because it won't make my character stronger. I don't need gil because I got lucky selling off event furnishing shit for billions of it. Lots of people have given you some decent answers, but let me tell you the real reason.
XI is no longer it's own division, it's bundled into XIV financially.
Meaning, it's profits are XIV's profits in terms of accounting. If they were to shut down XI, it would look as if XIV has lost a bunch of money.

The only way XI will shut down is when it becomes a loss. Which is unlikely, as your average FFXI player pays more than an FFXIV sub to play the game, because mog wardrobes are a thing.

there are a few cutscenes in XIV that can do stuff, and I mean, XVI is literally XIV engine but with a new graphics renderer on top hence why it runs like shit. the problem is these scenes are few and far between, and they tend to resort to motion capture, compared to XI straight up hand-animating its characters and scenes in old Squaresoft fashion

corsair had a big gun and then gambled their buffs, big risk big rewards. machinist is basically ff6 edgar's random gimmick weapons and summoning a turret/robot as something made entirely from wholecloth for itself. corsair would arguably be closer to the musketeer class that never got implemented but still has its class place lying in limsa.

In a more modern setting this would've probably include stuff like dice rolls, gold throwing, a cannonade for the LB, possible red mage like melee/ranged, etc.
