I only agree with the TCG point if you have to pay actual money for the packs. I've been really into card games for about a decade or so, and all the ones I've played had cheap-ass packs that you can buy with in-game currency that you can earn really damn fast, or they had player driven auctions or trades.
HEX, External, Duelyst, Shadowverse, and especially Infinity Wars we're really good at this. Aside from one instance where I spent about $10 on Infinity Wars cosmetics to flex on gays in ranked, I've never spent a penny on the games and still managed to put together multiple richgay competitive decks in each of them.
I really miss Infinity Wars and Duelyst.

Battle Passes only work out for the most casual of casual players, like "I only have 2 hours to play a week I can't believe video games can be free these days!" levels of casual. Any invested player is going to have to resist layers of psychological manipulation or be exploited tenfold in exchange for a "free" game. It's free in the same sense your first hit of crack is free.

          Anonymous

I'm fine with battlepasses if they don't have an expiration date on when you can buy/finish them and the challenges attached to it are actually interesting, aren't tedious (e.g. halo infinite where half of them are "win 5 games of the least fun side gamemode ever invented"), and aren't tied to a daily or weekly timer.
At that point it's just a decently priced cosmetics bundle that gives you some interesting things to try to do while playing the game
Tf2 is the only example I can think of that did it right like this though

Yeah, what happened to actually earning that content through gameplay instead of buying it? Dragon Quest XI is a good example.
      >first release the game normally
      >then force people to buy a 2nd version for full price if they want the updated content (DQXI S)
      >this comes with a bunch of new costumes, something rarely seen in DQ besides in IX (which had DLC you can't get anymore)
Now that 2 games in a row have had DLC (I'm not sure if X does because it's Japan only), it has lubed up the fanbase's rectums for the fricking that is coming with the new Monsters game, and probably XII.

      >200 GB install sizes regardless of hardware
Gaming is dead. Billions must uninstall.

      >Early Access abandonware
It's not just that early access games get abandoned, it's that ALL games are early access now. There is a simple truth that 99% of consumers refuse to see:
      >If the game you purchased has critical bugs that need a mandatory patch, it is untested and effectively early access.
      >If the game is regularly getting patches and updates for bugs and content, it is early access.
      >YOU PAID money to do quality assurance for the game's developers.
      >Quality assurance is a something COMPANIES PAY for historically.
Not only should early access games be free, you deserve the right to be paid for playing them. This goes for probably 90% of the games released in the last decade that are technically broken or missing tons of content if you merely buy a disc and play online, or play the 1.0 version.

Stop doing unpaid labor for these companies. You know what else? Stop talking about bad games. Corporations are leaking games on purpose, faking prosecution of leakers who are paid shills/interns, even if the leak looks "bad". Why? Because any publicity is GOOD publicity. The worst thing that could happen to a game is no one talks about it, no one knows it exists.

You are an UNPAID MARKETING AGENT.

        Anonymous

I wouldn't take it that far if weren't for that fact that pretty much EVERYTHING requires a downloaded patch. Just about nothing is released in a finished state.
          >but anon, old games were sometimes unfinished!
Suren but it's pretty obvious they were mostly complete. There were plenty of nickel and dime israeliteing tactics back then, from arcade coin-eaters to Sonic 3&Knuckles proto-DLC, but it was rare. It's the industry pervading prevalence of the scam that makes it so infuriating.

What about betas? Blizzard has been cheaping out on QA for so long with beta access. Again, you should be paid for bug testing. Some will respond
          >but anon, you aren't expected to bug test in beta, it's just to spread the game through word of mouth!
Oh? So, like I said in my last post, it's about being an UNPAID MARKETING SHILL? You should be getting paid at least US minimum wage to play early access/beta. The fact you pay for it is pathetic and should make your blood boil.

Imagine paying the school bully to get beat up.
Imagine paying for the privelege of writing some rich kid's essay in college.

Battle Passes. I know some anons already said it but Holy Fricking Shit I can't fathom how anyone could not only buy this garbage but also defend it

    >Okay spend 10$ plus tip to be able to get items that aren't completely shit
    >Alright grind it out every single waking hour of your free time so you can get that one thing you want in the pass before the month's over
    >Not gonna make it? Don't worry bro cough up 50$ for a boost and if you spend all week playing religiously you'll get it
The people behind this should be crucified and the people who defend it should be put to the brazen bull

      Anonymous

      >Ok grind this free battle pass
      >Oh, did you get it high enough to get that non-shit item that makes paying for it worth while? Guess you can buy it and unlock for free
It's not as bad as you make it, just don't fricking buy it until the end of the period and only if you already cleared the shit, instead of at the start and making it feel like you have to play.
Paid pass only missions are a fricking scam though and should burn in hell

Battle passes are cancer, free or not. Frick you and your bullshit gaming on some server's schedule. Just have unlockables and let me unlock them on my own time.

You know what? Master Duel has the best implementation of a battle pass I have ever seen because you can buy it with the in game currency and the pass itself offers more than enough to pay for the next one without spending a dime.

"Scam" doesn't mean "something I don't think is worth the price". If you use words incorrectly you weaken your criticism and thus weaken your own side.

    >Skinner box autism
I'll half give you this one, but it's more likely to be your fault if you're a moron prone to addiction
    >Selling a previously free game for like $30+tip

    >$40 "Indie" games
It wouldn't be as bad if these "indies" would drop the LARP and just say they're AA studios instead. "Indie" has had its meaning diluted and honest independent devs' work is devalued every time a "fake indie" releases a game that merely rides on the indie label for marketing and publicity purposes.
If you have a $1,000,000+ budget, you no longer get to classify yourself as an indie. It's pretty fricking simple.

      Anonymous

AA implies A higher level of quality than most indie devs provide.

No you moron. Indie is short for independant meaning they had no assistance from big publishers.
The price of an indie game doesn't meant it isn't indie.

      >If you have a $1,000,000+ budget, you no longer get to classify yourself as an indie.
That's the most moronic shit I've heard in my life. Indie literally has nothing to do with the budget of a game, it could be a AAA budget game and it would still be an indie game because they're doing everything independently.

    >$70 "AAA" games
I'm fine with this as long as there are no microtransactions
    >>$40 "Indie" games
    even $25 is pushing it
    Access abandonware
the worst is when "early access" games have battlepasses. like the game somehow isn't finished but you get completely locked out of content forever if you don't play it right now
    streamers get to play first
This and twitch drops are cancer
    >>Game journalists still allowed to lie
it's not "allowed to" it's "forced to"
    cutscenes to bloat playtime
These are more expensive than making longer gameplay sections, which really makes me wonder why they do it
    passes
Pure cancer, but don't forget the cash shop that rotates daily that accompanies every game with a battlepass
    box autism
It's fun in games designed around it like idle games and MMOs, but absolutely fricking moronic that this bullshit is in shooters now
a previously free game for like $30+tip
not aware of this ever happening
    >>200 GB install sizes regardless of hardware
it's fricking crazy to me how a game like Overwatch is still only 30 GB despite having tens of thousands of voicelines and 40 characters and some of the most detailed maps, but then CoD release at fricking 200 GB somehow

It still amazes me how so many people don't understand how 3rd party exclusives are anti-consumer bullshit. Like, it's so simple. They're trying to cuck you into buying 3 or 4 consoles when you could technically play all the games one 1.
