You either misunderstand the point of the article, or what the term universal system means. Either way you are a bad faith actor looking to farm (yous), and deserve to have a pineapple shoved up your urethrae.

      >or what the term universal system means.
Of course D&D is universal, it can run pulpy dungeon crawls in literally any setting! Even medieval sieges in any setting, and even shopping for adventuring equipment in any setting! With some work, you can use D&D for magic tea parties in any setting! What else could you want? Hell, most 'universal' systems like GURPS or FATE only work if you accept their intended gameplay loops too.

Please for the love of jesus get better material grogtard. Dnd is an industry standard for a reason. Cause it works. This sub is full of morons like you who wont admit that dnd is the best system to advemture with. Kys homo

It's the industry standard for the same reason tourists I see in my hometown like to eat at McDonalds instead of local restaurant. It's a familiar, established brand, and it was able to become a familiar, established brand simply because it was there first. I don't even hate DnD, but it's silly to pretend that its overwhelming popularity is due to quality rather than historical reasons.

I wish we got some more information here on what these stats mean in an OD&D context.
Tractics is a pain to find and only surfaced in the share thread a couple of years ago.
Once you know the way these were used in Chainmail and OD&D, you can push them forward to future editions.

I miss when people would port games to other games. Mostly they devolved into pointless number crunching but they have a better idea than assuming you could just adapt the concept.

How the hell do these things work together?

I would really like to expand these out to AD&D, but I hdon't know what stuff like what "To Hit Procedure +8" is, how Automatic weapons work or even how the chart of Armor adjustment due to range functions.

It's someone's notes not an article.

      >It's someone's notes not an article.
Congratulations, you just described the whole of OD&D. But to interperet, the sequence of play looks like:
      >select target area (determined by weapon type)
      >roll attack roll against AC 8 (AC 2 equivalent in 3e and on), plus range, cover and movement mods
      >all models inside target area roll 1d6
      >reference roll result against Armor Adjustment. If roll is inside the range, model is hit
      >if model is hit, it is shot, 1, 1d2, 1d4, 1d4+1 or 1d6 times, depending on weapon type
      >each bullet does 1d6 damage, like any other use of mundane deadly force

Alternatively, you determine hits first for each target, and armor save each individual bullet, or even generate the number of hits first, assign them to individual targets in the beaten zone, and then roll Armor Adjustment saves. Such is the magic of OD&D; you basically have to interpret the system for yourself, and no two DMs will ever run it quite the same.

        Thanks
A bit annoying they use +X for both target number and bonuses

          Anonymous

It's still the same concept as THAC0, but expressed a little more crudely. Think of it as your TN is based on your class and levels, and AC is added as a bonus to the roll, along with all the other bonuses. Since the shooter is shooting at an area target instead of trying to stick a sword between the chinks in your armor, it's technically not an AC bonus, so it's described as a "using a gun" bonus instead.

Whether it is intended to is irrelevant. Most iterations of dnd aren't even very good at being dnd.
There's a reason no one plays d20 modern.
