Then you have fooled yourself, for "generic" is in fact a real word with a real meaning
>Relating to or descriptive of an entire group or class. >Lacking specificity; general.
And it applies to most fantasy games, as they lack specific qualities and simply re-use old ideas and concepts relating to the fantasy genre instead of inventing anything new or unique.
Haven't seen this discussion in a long while. >Everything in a genre is fundamentally generic.
Well, DUUUUUH
>topic shifts to invalidate teenagers and autistics that use the word as a derogative. >Thinking different and unique is worth of attention and owed sex.
Well, fantasy doesn't feel like fantasy because it doesn't defy your imagination, nowadays we are constantly overstimulated and constantly exposed to the same tropes in fantastical settings so there's little wonder to it all. I don't really believe that either indie or japanese games offer any solution to this problem.
Speaking of Dragon Quest though, I'd like to see an Oda RPG or something similar. Just something with silly and fun designs in a journey where you just don't know what's behind the horizon.
>exposed to the same tropes in fantastical settings so there's little wonder to it all.
Dunno about that. I like my fantasy settings traditional. But every RPG nowadays wants to be quirky.

This is just what getting older feels like. If you plop the same thing in front of a kid, it'll blow their frickin mind. It's one of the cooler parts of being a parent, seeing kids experience stuff for the first time. It's also part of why young people are often behind genre-bending art. They don't think in "genres" as much as older people do. Humans are really good at shoving everything into recognizable patterns and categories, to our own creative detriment and enjoyment sometimes.
Same reason why so many Twittergays (your western developers) hate Tolkien, they hate classic fantasy because it's "white culture" in their eyes so they subvert and corrupt it with shit like bald gape 3
Not QUITE dead. We had Trails into Reverie kino and World of Warcraft Dragonflight last year, and Xenoblade 3, Monochrome Mobius, and Guild Wars 2 End of Dragons the year before that. We JUST had Granblue Fantasy Relink, and WoW The War Within is coming out later this year. But yeah, only two or three epic high fantasy adventures through imaginative worlds releasing per year isn't a good sign compared to the output the industry used to have.
Every other release has been generic fantasy for the past 30 years
>generic fantasy
no such thing
Anything that re-uses the same ideas over and over becomes generic.
>generic
I'm convinced that anyone who uses the word "generic" is either underage, illiterate or both

Addendum: They also lack reading comprehension.
You lack articulation.

what are you talking about? there's so much fantasy slop coming out every year.
Explain why you think those don't count, I want to laugh.
>Our only salvation are indies and Japanese games.
This is true of every genre, the West is a dying beast that produces nothing but shit now.

Probably the reason for all the negativity and doomposting
>"modern games don't fill the void in my life"
No, it's just you.
I hate jrpgs and fantasy, reccomend me an indie rpg
Undertale
