DOA3 on original Xbox was pretty fricking mindblowing. I had it when it was new, one of my first games for the system. It was so smooth and the character models were so detailed with great effects.
It’s hard to describe but it just looked so far beyond what my PS2/Cube could do. The game itself was amazing too. It’s probably been 20 years since I’ve played it. Early Xbox exclusives had a very patent look to them because they were really trying to make them as visually impressive as possible.
The way this game in particular rendered was just so eye pleasing. It literally felt like playing a CGI cutscene from last generation, that’s the best way to describe it. It has that “look”.
What a time to be (dead or) alive.

You can compare on web search yourself, but DOA3 definitely took advantage of DirectX features, had higher quality models, way better lighting, bump mapping and the Xbox itself just had way better video out than the PS2’s shitty video out.

      >steam dlc shitfest is nearly unplayable to me

do the DLC costumes matter that much when it comes to gameplay?

I bought 5 on Steam and it came with for on sale like the basic story/all characters pack for 20$ had a shit ton of costumes.
DoA3 on the Xbox only had like 3/4 costumes per character. 5 has 8-10 per character and there's like 40 characters.

so if you download the Steam version it's the f2p version. You purchase the Story mode/Full game it unlocks all the characters besides Mai/Naotora because they are owned by SNK/Tecmo(weird Naotora is a Tecmo character but they can't keep her license up or whatever)

It's essientially the full version but in a f2p format so other people can pay 2$ for a character instead of a full $20 for everything else they're not interested in.

Western publishers sometimes added things to rendered art to give it more "oomph". They did this with Armored Core 1 by making the cover AC wield 2 guns when in the original image it just wields 1.

I was a nice attempt at bringing VF style gameplay to wider audiences but in the end it was a casual game. Not as deep as VF or Tekken games.

      Anonymous

It's not really like VF or Tekken though, outside of having strings. The ability to counter out of hit stun I'd say gave it a lot more mechanical identity/distinctness than Tekken's ever managed.

        Anonymous

DoA is based on VF but has longer hitstuns and easy to execute universal counters, which make the game more casual. Tekken is very distinct from VF fundamentally, which also makes it distinct from DoA.

          Anonymous

Tekken's different now because VF changed significantly while Tekken just doubled down on all the things VF removed because they were annoying. From the start DOA definitely wasn't "based" on VF. It doesn't have the same movement at all, it doesn't have ringouts, it has completely different throw escapes, being able to do counters during hitstun, again, fundamentally changes the entire game.

They both have strings, that's pretty much it. Even modern Tekken has a lot more in common with VF than DOA ever did.

            Anonymous

Dunno about the latest ones because I never played DoA 5 and 6. You need to check the earlier games though. Tekken was different from VF from the start. It didn't have the triangle system but it had juggles and 10-hitters from the start and some distinct shit like bouncing the opponent against the floor appeared in T3. There also were a lot of weird inputs because Namco didn't really know what they were doing while Sega tried to keep things simple. Shit like (d,f+1), (d,d/f,f+1) and (d,d/f,f,1) being treated as different inputs for different moves. They are technically but other games rarely are so anal about making them executing different moves, i.e. in Street Fighter all three are acceptable for hadouken.
DoA1 literally used VF triangle system except they replaced blocking with defensive holds in the system (blocking is still in the game of course). Next check early DoA and early VF movelists side by side and you'll see that DoA copied VF inputs too. They just took what was working already while Tekken tried to reinvent the wheel for some stupid reason. And yes, DoA1 had ring outs. They were removed in the PS1 version which was basically DoA1.5 rather than a straight port.

              >And yes, DoA1 had ring outs. They were removed in the PS1 version which was basically DoA1.5 rather than a straight port.
Oh I've never played DOA1, I assumed you were talking about the later games because you mentioned easy to do counters and from what my friend's told me the counters in DOA1 were a nightmare to do.

              >Next check early DoA and early VF movelists side by side and you'll see that DoA copied VF inputs too.
Yeah looking at Tekken movelists maybe I just don't know enough about the game. I always assumed most 3D games had pretty similar inputs to VF since I mean how many different ways could you move a stick, but I guess Tekken is mostly just single directions and different punch/kick buttons. That's weird. It looks like they did take the undoubtedly worst kind of input from VF though, that while-rising bullshit. I think DOA always steered clear of that at least.

Those are just for the fancy counters that became the normal ones for 2 and after. The regular simple counterholds button still work.

                Anonymous

How fricking dense can you be.

Tekken has a left fist button, right fist button, left kick button, and right kick button.

Doa and VF just have punch kick counter. Tekken has ridiculous dial-a-combos while doa and vf keep the moves pretty simple

                Anonymous

Yeah but Tekken has left/right evades and circular/half-circular moves like VF, DOA doesn't. There are a lot of shared elements among the 3. Yeah it's got LIMB BASED COMBAT or whatever but to me, someone who's played a lot of DOA3, a lot of VF5, and not a lot of Tekken, Tekken seems a lot more like VF than DOA.

        Anonymous

Well I can tell you that setting up a naomi netboot setup is probably not worth it considering the limited library.
Considering you have to buy a
        Naomi 1 or 2 board
Netdimm cart (with firmware 3.17 or higher, since lower firmwares can't be updated without a gdrom disc or pulling the chip and having it programmed, newer firmwares can be updated over ethernet)
Power supply (ATX with an adapter or an arcade supply like a meanwell QP-150-3A, not all ATX supplies can keep the 5V stable enough with such low 12V usage for netdimm use so keep that in mind)
        Wiring harness
A JVS to USB board or one of the original I/O boards
And optionally an OSSC, since the naomi outputs over vga which limits you to computer monitors without one.
And if you want to do it conveniently you also need a raspberry pi, don't use the piforce tools all the guides talk about though since dragonminded has made a way better version with on screen game selection.

          Anonymous

also forgot you'll probably want a multiregion bios chip, and a zero pic
and the cheapest way to obtain the naomi hardware and dimm is from japan so factor in importer fees too
wouldn't recommend the straight out of china parts since they seem to either have come from the nastiest smoke filled arcades on earth or straight out of the scrapyard.

Always enjoyed Tekken, MK and SC but never got to play DOA because PS gay.
I got DOA 5 ultimate really cheap on PS3 years ago and I only just got around to playing it this year as my first DOA game and I wasn't all that impressed t b h. The story was fun and enjoyable with the hot ass girls and how over the top and ridiculous it all was but it seemed kind of easy and over really quickly and the other modes weren't enough to hold my attention. It felt like it was designed for online play with everything else being tacked on like most games from the early 10s and still today.
I also have DOA 2 on PS2 which I've never played (another cheap find from years ago) How much better or different are the earlier DOA games compared to 5? I felt like I maybe got the wrong first impression of the series. I'll have to play 2 someday and then maybe the others once XEMU becomes properly functional.

      >never got to play DOA because PS gay
      >DoA1 is on PS1
      >DoA2 is on PS2
      Why.
Anyway, DoA2 was one of the premier fighting games of its time along with Tekken Tag 1 and Soulcalibur. It lacked in characters compared to Namco fighting games but had interesting take on VF triangle fighting system with counters and had the best dynamic stages with hazards and multiple tiers. After DoA2 the series stagnated only improving on graphics and adding boring fanservice thots to the roster because these became the main selling point. DoA5 and 6 are mediocre. You should give DoA2 a try but it's better on Dreamcast.
