Not sure how to feel about this, is this going to be a good move for Compile Heart? I think most people played it for the cute girls and the bad end gore was just a side thing, but I could be wrong

No, the edgy gore is definitely a big part of the appeal. The first thing you see in DERQ is Shiina getting mauled by the final boss, and it was a whole mechanic in DERQ2 that the game would keep going even if you picked options that would kill the npc girls. Might as well go all-out.

I'm looking forward to the voice acting and sound effects for these scenes, even when they weren't quite this graphic in previous games those elements really sold the gruesomeness.

Trillion and Dragon Star Varnir had scenes where girls were eaten alive, so CH isn't stranger to these kinda things.
In fact, I'm glad they're going all out this time.
Also, new MC is total plapcow.

Trillion's death scenes were brutal, because you spent so much time raising each girl and spending hours and hours with her before each one, and since it's always technically possible to save them, it's your fault that they die. And they stayed dead unless you did the silly 'true end' which no normal gamer got without a guide (how can you lose that many times?) or beat him with the very first girl (also extremely unlikely without a guide and savescumming). I got Ruche's ending on my first playthrough and the first four girls were just fricking dead, probably lots of players who didn't play more than once.

Is this shit worth playing? I've had it downloaded for years, but after playing Ryza Atelier I got a little tired of JRPGs.

I played it just for the sake of trying another CH game that isn't Nep. Yeah, I also thought the bad end gore isn't really the main draw despite being part of the game's identity ever since the intro. Gameplay gimmicks were fun, the story started decent but turns really meh at the end.

Only the first one if you ask me. Both plot and gameplay are more engaging.
2nd game goes nowhere for a while, and you get dumbed down mechanics for some weird reason.

        >Only the first one if you ask me.
Alright, I will give it a shot. Is the gameplay actually challenging or is it just get bigger numbers to pass?

Good, we need more horror/dark jrpgs. That said after the first two games I have zero faith in this.

You play multiball pinball with enemies to pass.

I dunno if I'd call Death End dark, it's just edgy and constantly veers into silly.

I didn't think it was challenging, but not completely braindead either. There are 4 aspects you have to always keep in mind:
          >elemental RPS, kinda like Pokemon types, but there are only 3 of them. Easy enough to run into enemies who can deal twice as much damage to at least one of your party members
          >Defense and Magical Defense, you will find many enemies(especially near the end) who tank either one kind of attacks or the other, urging the player to keep a variety of skills available and not ignore one attack stat altogether
          >field bugs, you can and will get pushed into these if you aren't careful, they can instakill or inflict a status that makes you skip turns
          >positioning, mostly to maximize damage by throwing enemies into walls or bouncing them back and forth against your other party members, there are some enemies where most of the damage can only be dealt this way

            Anonymous

Sounds good enough for a JPRG, thanks.

              Anonymous

Have fun. Play hard mode, and keep in mind the elemental RPS and defenses if you feel like damage is too high/not high enough. The variance can be wild, as in suddenly going from dealing 10k damage to 100 if you hit the enemies with what they are strong against.

            Anonymous

And then the second game shits all over this by nerfing the effect of defense, throwing many beneficial field bugs, and making bounce damage not so relevant unlike the first game where you could take half of a boss health if your positioning forces the enemy model into the wall multiple times.

              >and making bounce damage not so relevant unlike the first game where you could take half of a boss health if your positioning forces the enemy model into the wall multiple times.
The frick, did you miss the super knockback mechanic? You can inflict much higher knockback damage than in the first game. That said I think both games shit the bed by not having any obstacle on the battlefield to actually make it feel like pinball and let you launch enemies with complex trajectories. Hopefully in the third main game.

                Anonymous

It's even better in the first game though, I can vividly remember killing some bosses quickly purely because they hit the wall multiple times in one turn, usually because they were trapped between multiple party members.

                Anonymous

You can do it in 2 as well, it's just harder because bosses are generally smaller so you have to surround them more closely. But if you try to fight the huge final boss on hard, unga bunga super knockback is the only viable way to take it down since it has millions of HP.

Are they ever going to make Arata frick Shina or completely scrap straight romance like they did with the second game

      Anonymous

Considering they shoved Lily (Yurisa) into Shina's group (the only non-protagonist of the four), I'm guessing there's a better chance of a bad end where Shiina gets lesbian raped than there is of a romance with Arata ever. Arata will probably end up with Lydia if anyone

I know the whole plot is about rewriting reality, but it would honestly suck if they undid Lydia's death. It happened in the higher domain so it should be beyond the scope of the characters' powers.

      >Lily is now working directly at the company with her
      >no profile for Arata along the other company members meaning he's probably off on his own or dead again
      >Mai and Rottie are back and at least one of the NPC b***hes from the academy as well
I'm sure Arata/Shiina will happen but they're like an endangered species.
