frustrating but memorable mechanic. the mere fact that you are seething about it 12 years later means I don't even need to defend it. you lost.

So you're already cursed by the darksign, what kind of extra curse is this anyway?

Did you know that they nerfed this mechanic? Originally your HP kept halving if you got frogged repeatedly.

Wasn't it also harder to cure?

I think initially you could only get stones from Oswald and he only sells 5. Eventually they patched it so the female merchant sells an unlimited amount. they are more expensive from her but she's right next to the Depths.

I remember being a bug instead, but shit was hilarious. A friend of mine was terrified by it, I remembered taking several different playthroughs to die to the curse

And getting rid of it was way harder too

Soulsgays will defend a mechanic that forces you to grind souls for a cure.
lol lmao and little bit of kek

Forces you to interact with a greater degree of the game.
Either you need to grind for the transient curse from themerchant lady or fall back to firelink (which is easy to do due to the shortcuts) and explore new londo of which you are directed towards thanks to the association of the Transient Curses, Keyword Curse.
On which you actually play through the upper ruins as expected, able to damage the ghosts naturally and at great risk of their ambush tactics you meet Ingward how curse you and thanks to all the souls you gained along the way get the Resist Curse Sorcery.and if you explore the cursebite ring.
Then when it comes time to drain the ruins you already know where to go with no guides.

you're not wrong but I wonder how many players actually went that route. NLR is probably harder than the Depths at that point, especially if you got nerfed by the curse.

but how would you know about Transient Curses to begin with if you went to the Depths first?

    i love mechanics like this
originally it was intended to brick your save if you didn't explore enough to get that shit cured
literally being able to perish added so much to the immersion
but i guess people don't frick with that kind of design anymore

I got cursed once in my entire Darksouls career.
iirc only those weird toad looking enemies can curse you.
      git gud

      >brick your save
      thats sounds fricking kino

Oh no! Are you telling me that I have to pay attention when playing the game or else something bad will happen? But what about my phone and second screen showing a vtuber?? Do they really expect me to just focus on one screen when playing vidya?!?!?

Cursed almost ruined the game for me, back when I first started playing.

I was a few hours in, exploring on my way to the Bell Gargoyle, think I was maybe just past the Taurus Demon yet, but I found a bonfire and saw I could restore my humanity, and kindle it. With no explanation about what either of those things were, I went ahead and did exactly that, and was soon after invaded by a red-phantom who teleported around, one shot me, and gave me the Cursed Debuff.

Now I had to fight all the way through the game, to the Bell Tower, with half HP. Now that wouldn't be even an issue but back then it seemed impossible- I made a thread here talking about how bullshit and unfair that was, to be punished with half an HP bar and no way to remove it... only to be informed that apparently the guy had been hacking and normally players couldn't do that to each other. The Ganker thread being supportive and encouraging, and basically telling me to restart my character since I'd get back to where I was really quickly, restored my faith in the game. I gave it another shot, and it's become one of my all time favourites. Cursed fricking sucks though.

reminds me of that hacker streaming invading the DS remaster and cursing/egging everyone on release

I went through DS1 without ever restoring humanity a single time, never even knew what the mechanic was about until my friend told me after i beat the game
No, i will NEVER use a consumable in a videogame EVER
I will save every health potion until AFTER the final boss and NG+ because you never know when you need a health potion

Except the flasks right? Since they regenerate on bonfires or upon death.
