I never bought that they'd start releasing multiple chapters at once. The chapters don't come out fast enough for that and it doesn't make cultural sense. Letting each chapter breathe leads to more discussions and fanworks, multiple chapters at once would cause a lot of content to be overshadowed.
he already said he doesn't want to release 3 by itself because it is a glorified minigame collection and won't advance the plot (which will kill people hoping for toriel/undyne/blook dark world shenanigans)

I might be getting old but this game really isn't pulling me in from a narrative perspective, mostly because it is incomplete so I can't see where it's going yet. But to think I'm gonna be dragged around again just for nothing to happen is disappointing.

That's what I hate most about the wait. Until we get the full picture, the lore in the Deltarune world is incomplete, and even playing it safe might mean any fangames made before Deltarune's completion would inevitably miscontrue and ignore the rules confirmed in the OG. For god's sake, we dont even know if humans vs monsters ever happened, or why Kris is the only human in Hometown, the Light World is practically blank. Not to say every fangame would break the immersion as hard as your Deltatraveler, mind you, but there would be certain inconsistencies that are impossible in the world of Deltarune
One thing that might even be super frustrating from Toby's perspective is if a fangame just accurately predicts what he has planned.
Or worse, executes it better.
Imagine waiting years for 3-7 only for it to be a worse version of a fangame you played half a decade ago.
We already see this with Pokemon.
I kinda hope it doesn't come out this year now. I've got other meta indie pixel slop to obsess over during the second half of this year, I don't know if I can handle two. Still, I believe Toby will actually manage to pull through this time and give us something at the end of 2024
