I've kinda had the feeling pokemon designs were getting less and less creative as time went on. Less cool ideas and concepts put into pokemon and more just "we need to use this animal" or "we need to get this type combo covered". So I made a list where I just laid out each design based on how creative I think it is.
And I did notice most designs are either serviceable or below, and gen 9 has a lot of stinkers when it comes to really bland pokemon. And of course designs that just add on or are spins on something else aren't very creative unless they can contextualize the original in a smart way. Most paradox mons/regional forms/ convergent evos don't do that.
Also note that this isn't me saying the designs are "good" or "bad", there's really good designs on the bottom tier and there's Skeledirge in the top one.
I'm just trying to see if the pokemon company is getting safer with their pokemon. And I think so. Also feel free to disagree and make your own lists.

I disagree. Most designs now have multiple (3+) inspirations and design references, which wasn't all that common in earlier gens which were just animal/object + element. Whether or not this makes a design good or overdesigned is up to taste but you can't claim they're not creative. Look at Skeledirge which has like 6 different motifs going on.

That's 27 pokemon that take inspiration or are a remix on pokemon from another generation.
Out of the 110 new pokemon added this gen, this means that a quarter of their "new pokemon" are actually remixes of old pokemon.

Scovillain is not THAT uncreative, just a bit undercooked. It needs an evolution at some point.
If your idea of creativity is seeing how many different concepts they can mash into a single design then gens 1 and 5 are easily the least creative batches since a lot of their Pokemon were based off a single idea, usually an animal or kaiju of some sort.
If anything Pokemon designs are getting too creative for their own good because they keep trying to do a dozen different things with each one, which is how you get things like jobmon starters.

I'd say the gap in the Tinakton-line is weird on the "Safe"-"Creative" scale, "Small Girl With huge Weapon" is a pretty common design appeal, and i think Tinkatink with the "Baby with a rattle club" angle is the riskiest/creative design in the line and the others are the "Safe" ones. Just my input on considering the POWERGAP.
