Designs sure shat the bed in the last few gens. Posted on May 19, 2023 by Anonymous Designs sure shat the bed in the last few gens.
It actually went downhill starting in Gen 3, the cape was really cool in Gen 1/2. Poke Maniac went from maybe someone who was too into battles to a fucking furfag
I don't mind the mascot suit fanatics but I agree that the older maniac was way cooler. The mascot suit shouldve been a different class.
The suits couldve been like, a movie actor class or performer. Or take the cape design and call it Battle Maniac
I don't think it's supposed to be a cape so much as a big baggy coat. Maniacs are clearly positioned along with Super Nerds as otaku stereotypes, so it makes a little more sense that later gens tried pivoting them to a cosplay theme.
>last few gens
you clearly mean since gen 3
the gen 2 sprite is probably my favorite. he's totally the shitter who would say shit like "now you've unleashed my rage!!" and other weird anime-ass quips without an ounce of irony
They should've kept his school shooter trench coat instead of the cape. It shows that he's some nerd but also still makes him look cool. Though I guess the cape is more chuuni
the evolution of this design is actually pretty hilarious. it progresses into making fun of charizard fanboys, before gamefreak realizes that they're the charizard fanboys and backpedal
He's supposed to be a kaiju fan, who obviously tend to be weird otaku, and gf would obviously have quite a few kaiju autists if they were gen x ers making a monster game in the 90s. It's joke poking fun of themselves. The fursuit is meant to be those rubber suits kaiju actors wire
not everything is about "muh kaiju"
This time it is
His name is literally fucking "Kaiju Maniac" in Japanese.
かいじゅうマニア -> Kaijuu Mania -> Kaiju Maniac -> PokéManiac.
Broken down since you're a sped.
does this make slowpoke a kaiju
According to the Egg Groups, yes. In Japanese, Monster is Kaiju and Poké Maniac is Kaiju Maniac. It's also why Poké Maniacs specialize in Pokémon from that Egg Group.
Do people not understand that the gens 1 and 2 pokemaniac are meant to be smelly chunni otaku? Its not a cool cape, its an edgelord trying his hardest to look like the cool villain from his favorite manga series.
As for why they became furfriends, the class obviously parallels those who gamefreak consider the smelliest losers still interested in their products.
Remove the rain coat and look confident, this dude could pull the look off
This. It’s literally just different flavors of otaku cringe.
They should make a chuuni class that's a trainer that only uses stereotypical "cool"(in the japanese sense) and "edgy" mons, like Lucario, Scizor, Arcanine, the Charcadet family, and so on.
It should be a kid around 13-14. Maybe Gladion can be the blueprint for the design. Or maybe they can literally be the "Middle-schooler" class, and could wear a gakuran school uniform with some edgy accessories to stand out. Like headphones, maybe headphones could work.
They could have a cocky expression when battling and then have their childish side come out in their loss animation.
I actually like this
It would give more personality to trainer types if the pokemon they had were more thematically consistent instead of usually being either broadly type based or sometimes just arbitrary
The problem is that designing a character who is supposed to look like a cool manga character, actually looks like one when you draw him in a manga style
I look like this
>only uses stereotypical "cool"(in the japanese sense) and "edgy" mons, like Lucario, Scizor, Arcanine, the Charcadet family, and so on
And I do this
Why did GF abandon the biker class, was it considered too mean for kids? Didn't even return in Lets Go
They didnt want to make animations for someone riding a motorcycle
>Bikers were killed for 3D
They abandoned bikers because they abandoned bikes.
>they abandoned bikes
They made a bike Pokémon in Gen 9. They made super versions of said bike Pokémon as the game's mascots. Now I hate Game Freak even more for not giving us Galarian Bikers on clown bikes in the water and Paldean Bikers on or with Cyclizar.
Gen 9 ruined the pattern of him becoming more degenerate
He looks like a guy who collects and reviews funko pops now so I'd say it still fits the theme
The charizard impression the RSE one is doing is pure soul
The idea changed entirely, that’s why
Maniac more of a freak
Whereas by Gen 3 they wanted an obsessed fan
When did pomf start recognizing SW97?
gen 2 and RSE sprites are the best here
It is a reflection of modern society.
They were so cool and edgy..what happened?
They became furries. Furries should not be allowed anywhere even in fiction.
>They were so cool and edgy
No they weren't. They were chunni tryhards.
They've been shitting the bed sine Gen 5 when they just did "gen 1 but worse" for 90% of the designs.
ace trainer but then they dropped them completely
Let's Go has the best one tho.
It's the worse, I can at least buy the idea of someone going out dressed like gen 9's guy
Gen 9 guy should've a different model for each gen. Would be so much cooler.
Why is geb 4's not even in a real pokemon suit like the others
They didn't want to insult CHARIZARD anymore
>only costume available was a clearanced out ROCK RHINO at Spirit Halloween
the legpee one is pretty good
Dear fuck you're right
He's just like me, until gen 6
Gen 8 still had some good NPC designs but everything in Gen 9 looks like shit.
now post her howling
People complain about jobmons but no one talks about job trainers. Thing that was cool about lot of gym leaders is that their just cool dudes who trained hard. They werent defined by their jobs.
I absolutely love that Brock is just a guy. He's the guyest guy that ever guyed and he's the first obstacle in your adventure.
Let's just look at Gen 1
He is just a dude, it seems
Swimmer, dresses pretty professionally for it in most art of her
I don't know what she is, but I'm sure some fucking weeb will tell me
Ninja, if that's a job
Doesn't really have a job, but the Dojo right next door is self explanatory
Mob boss, if that's a job
It's about half and half, depending on how you count it.
I guess its less about *having a job* and more about that job being their whole character. Blaine is a scientist yes, but like- he is also just like. A guy.
>I don't know what she is, but I'm sure some fucking weeb will tell me
she's this weird thing they have over in nipponland called a "woman"
Women? We have something like that here...just well, a lot uglier.
is blaine a scientist in the games or just the manga
Go play the kanto games kid.
This is gross. And what's worse is that flattening the gym leaders makes them already more boring than the title of "Type ace" already makes them. RSE was the start of this and of the pixel games, it by far has the worst gym leader line up.
>Obviously missed the point
One thing I like about most of the Johto Leaders is that they were basically "Boss" versions of existing Trainer Classes, which is why they felt far more naturalised into the world.
No equivalent, but could pass as a Cooltrainer (M) or a Channeler/Medium in function (spiritually-attuned Ghost user).
No equivalent, but in the Gen 2 beta she looked more like a typical miko, so could've been related to the Kimono Girls (which was a generic class at the time, I believe). Still, she could pass as the nicer and less mean Gen 1 Lass.
And it extends to the new E4s, as well:
>Karen is the final boss Beauty
I feel like there's a direct correlation between having a good amount of "guys who guy" and the game's quality as a whole. Maybe it has something to do with how detached the modern generations are from the original vision.
Like, you'd never see someone like Brock anymore. Every gym leader in Kalos, Galar, and Paldea has another job outside of being a gym leader.
I think Alola strikes a nice balance with the trial captains/kahunas. Some are clearly fully invested in their roles while others seem to just be having fun or don't really give much of a shit and have better things to do.
This is true, just wish they weren't stuck in such a shitty game.
Still by far the best games of the 3D era.
Gen 7, specifically the Ultra games was the last time I felt like they tried, I never played them but I hear the first versions were garbage.
Other way around, SM are kino and USUM are souless cashgrabs.
Well at least we can agree the Gen had a good pair of games.
There was one super nerd in the FRLG rock tunnel who always irritated the fuck out of me as a kid
Why did he piss you off?
I don't remember tbh, I think it was Ashton though
Gen 6's is the best, just look at fucking sperging a RAWR out
NPC designs definitely have gotten a lot worse especially in Gen 9, but one that they did very well is the Dragon Tamer
It is shit
Gen 2's was the best tbh, the big coat looks sick
I think turning him into a weird furry was a mistake
