It actually went downhill starting in Gen 3, the cape was really cool in Gen 1/2. Poke Maniac went from maybe someone who was too into battles to a fucking furfag

I don't mind the mascot suit fanatics but I agree that the older maniac was way cooler. The mascot suit shouldve been a different class.

The suits couldve been like, a movie actor class or performer. Or take the cape design and call it Battle Maniac

      Anonymous

I don't think it's supposed to be a cape so much as a big baggy coat. Maniacs are clearly positioned along with Super Nerds as otaku stereotypes, so it makes a little more sense that later gens tried pivoting them to a cosplay theme.

They should've kept his school shooter trench coat instead of the cape. It shows that he's some nerd but also still makes him look cool. Though I guess the cape is more chuuni

Do people not understand that the gens 1 and 2 pokemaniac are meant to be smelly chunni otaku? Its not a cool cape, its an edgelord trying his hardest to look like the cool villain from his favorite manga series.

As for why they became furfriends, the class obviously parallels those who gamefreak consider the smelliest losers still interested in their products.

He's supposed to be a kaiju fan, who obviously tend to be weird otaku, and gf would obviously have quite a few kaiju autists if they were gen x ers making a monster game in the 90s. It's joke poking fun of themselves. The fursuit is meant to be those rubber suits kaiju actors wire

According to the Egg Groups, yes. In Japanese, Monster is Kaiju and Poké Maniac is Kaiju Maniac. It's also why Poké Maniacs specialize in Pokémon from that Egg Group.

They should make a chuuni class that's a trainer that only uses stereotypical "cool"(in the japanese sense) and "edgy" mons, like Lucario, Scizor, Arcanine, the Charcadet family, and so on.
It should be a kid around 13-14. Maybe Gladion can be the blueprint for the design. Or maybe they can literally be the "Middle-schooler" class, and could wear a gakuran school uniform with some edgy accessories to stand out. Like headphones, maybe headphones could work.
They could have a cocky expression when battling and then have their childish side come out in their loss animation.

        I actually like this
It would give more personality to trainer types if the pokemon they had were more thematically consistent instead of usually being either broadly type based or sometimes just arbitrary

This is gross. And what's worse is that flattening the gym leaders makes them already more boring than the title of "Type ace" already makes them. RSE was the start of this and of the pixel games, it by far has the worst gym leader line up.

Let's just look at Gen 1
        >Brock

One thing I like about most of the Johto Leaders is that they were basically "Boss" versions of existing Trainer Classes, which is why they felt far more naturalised into the world.
        >Falkner
        Bird Keeper
        >Bugsy
        Bug Catcher
        >Whitney
        Lass
        >Morty
No equivalent, but could pass as a Cooltrainer (M) or a Channeler/Medium in function (spiritually-attuned Ghost user).
        >Chuck
        Blackbelt
        >Jasmine
No equivalent, but in the Gen 2 beta she looked more like a typical miko, so could've been related to the Kimono Girls (which was a generic class at the time, I believe). Still, she could pass as the nicer and less mean Gen 1 Lass.
        >Pryce
        Gentleman
        >Clair
        Cooltrainer (F)
And it extends to the new E4s, as well:
        >Will
        Juggler/Psychic hybrid
        >Karen
        Beauty

I feel like there's a direct correlation between having a good amount of "guys who guy" and the game's quality as a whole. Maybe it has something to do with how detached the modern generations are from the original vision.
Like, you'd never see someone like Brock anymore. Every gym leader in Kalos, Galar, and Paldea has another job outside of being a gym leader.
