The sheer embarassment of playing this game and kingdom hearts was too much for young me. I honestly destroyed both of these games just so I wouldn't die of cringe when my family/friends/gf eventually found them going through my old things.
When the remaster came out everyone acted like it was the best game ever and we all needed to play it. Then we bought it, realised it was trash, and the game was quickly forgotten again.
The characters are not very memorable, the plot and gameplay are mediocre so there is not a lot to talk about. The soundtrack is also average by Final Fantasy standards.
There was a doujin I was really, really fond of when I was 13 or so that had the pig guy lead the main girl character(not the bunny) on a leash to the slave market to be gangbanged.
He made the series profitable but ruined Final Fantasy.
Nomura's fanbase and Square pandering to them is what ruined it for me.
But you need to be old to understand what I'm saying, since NomuraFantasy has become the default longer than not.
I haven't enjoyed the FF series since they went 3d. FF3, 5, and 6 were my favorites. Unpopular opinion but ff7 and up were where it went downhill. I enjoyed ff8 when it first came out but looking back it was mostly just because I liked squall > cloud.

If Vaan wasn't framed as being the main player character from the start and Penelo was used as a guest party member until you were too far from Rabanastre the game would be remembered much more fondly

Unlocking the various parts of the gambits could be better. I always seem to be lacking the exact target or percentage threshhold I want and I don't know in the moment where to get it

The overinflated movie budget literally sank Square, caused Gooch to get the boot, and forced the merger to save what was left. FFX was the last mainline game from Squaresoft. Everything else has been spinoff garbage and MMOs. Now they're swimming in FF14's money thanks to WoW dying off, mobile gachashit, and brand deals. It's pretty definitive.

Dragon Quest remained true to its roots since the begining, they keep doing old school stuff like Bravely,Octopaht or Triangle, but for god knows what reason they decided that FF would be "experimental action games" (even when they litteraly do nothing with the experiments afterwards). I'd blame Nomura on this but if the higher ups let him do and keep on doing nothing to change that he's not the one at fault here.

The merger with Enix wasn't voluntary, and it was more Enix acquiring Squaresoft than a mutual merger.
This is why FF has fallen, but Dragon Quest continues strong. Enix has been fully in control of Squarsoft since 2008 and they do not care about FF games except as a source of income.
Most of their other properties are guaranteed to sell well. DQ will always sell despite not really changing all that, FF games need advertising after 13 and 15 broke franchise faith. They don't care too much though, considering how every side project gets minimal advertising like Neo or SOP

You're correct, FF's explosive popularity was from 1997-2001 and it fell off after that. People still speak of it like it was an enormous juggernaut but its cultural relevancy dwarfed what it actually sold. Zelda was in the same boat barring Twilight Princess, the series was basically in straight decline after OoT until BotW.
The franchise definitely peaked entirely with 7, I think the rest of the games simply didn't capture what made 7 popular (unique plot and world, modern issues also being covered with environmentalism)
Other FF's miss the mark on a unique premise (9 was good but was hardly a unique fantasy) or modern topics (12 being related to the Yugoslav war, 15 being literal who stuff). Also games stopped being as expansive following 10.

Zelda is definitely a lot less impressive looking back than people claim it is as well, but Zelda and Nintendo in general will take a step back occasionally and assess how to revamp it, every time anyone has touched Final Fantasy it somehow just comes out even worse and less impressive looking than it did before. Honestly even technical things are relatively less impressive now than they were in the 90s when the games were pushing these FMVs and huge orchestral scores, 15/16 look good but compared to their competition they just look good, during that heyday an FF game was on a whole other level of presentation.
I think XVI has stand out presentation, even compared to the competition or previous FF games. I don't like all the pausing, but the whole game knocks it out of the park in visuals, presenting information, the music is some of the best this year and I doubt it'll be topped unless armored core 6 kills it

But it’s silly and fun, I like how it’s ties 10 with 7, combat is so slick and I like all the different outfit designs. The jazzy jpop soundtrack is really bouncy and fits the mood, I think it’s cool Yuna gets a happy life with her friends after how dark the end of x got.
I think it serves its purpose as a fun spinoff I get that it’s for a different demographic but idk I like cute games.

The characters have "jobs" which were called in a different ways and you can change them in combat having combo like synergist debuffs and togheter with an hard hitter can cc groups or focus on a single big boss, your healer can switch and become a mage etc... this is how the combat works.
General theme of the games is time frickery (2 and 3 more than anything) the general setting is tech future, no fantasy medieval.
Summons are transformers (fo real) like a guy has shiva but she turns into a motorcycle.
The games levels are tunnel based, there is no open world except the "select a level" and you go.
There are no shops, no cities, only corridors full of enemies and sometimes something to gatther (this don't apply to 3)
1 - you control 6 character but more than half the game you fight just in two.
2 - you control 2 characters but you can catch a monster and use it with your party. Monsters has jobs.
3 - you control just one character but it's like playing majora's mask (without rewind) you have a limited time to do stuff in a big city and grounds. Time is always running, you can't stop it and events and quest happens continuously till time's up and you reap what you saw.
I don't remember exactly how, either you can turn back before the final boss and rewind time or you get the chance to rewind if you lose to him

You can rewind by asking hope to go back to the first day. Or by running out of time. Every major event in the game provides more phantoma (ff13 lore name for souls) which you give to Yggdrasil the tree of life which extends the in game clock by a few days. But you cannot choose how far to go back you basically just new game + keeping all outfits and gear.
Fun combat system and world in a game with really fricking bad quests is how I would describe ff 13-3

No it’s widely considered a superior remaster to X lol, the updated models are basically just painted textures over the originals so the animations actually fit, and the environments were mostly just updated texture wise. It’s arguably prettier than the ps2
The fricked up development cycle and the director's obsession and trying to sell his waifu that was Final Fantasy 13 did more damage to the franchise than FF-X2. X2 was basically harmless compared to dragging the franchise into a three part saga no one asked for, eating up massive amounts of resources, fricked up 15's development, and I THINK maybe being the only major FF releases outside of Type Zero, which basically the fans had to get on their hands and knees and beg for to get released to the West.
Unrelated, but that that fight against Bhunivelze was him testing Lighting's/Humanities resolve. Because there is zero chance in hell she won a 1v1 against the motherfricker that literally just destroyed the universe and then recreated it from scratch.

Final Fantasy releases were like GTA releases back then. Now they just exist.
For a few years in the west they were a big deal, franchise rose and fell pretty inelegantly by 2002 and only really broke out around 95 or so. It’s been in the gutter far longer than it enjoyed any heyday.
You're correct, FF's explosive popularity was from 1997-2001 and it fell off after that. People still speak of it like it was an enormous juggernaut but its cultural relevancy dwarfed what it actually sold. Zelda was in the same boat barring Twilight Princess, the series was basically in straight decline after OoT until BotW.
The franchise definitely peaked entirely with 7, I think the rest of the games simply didn't capture what made 7 popular (unique plot and world, modern issues also being covered with environmentalism)
Other FF's miss the mark on a unique premise (9 was good but was hardly a unique fantasy) or modern topics (12 being related to the Yugoslav war, 15 being literal who stuff). Also games stopped being as expansive following 10.

Zelda is definitely a lot less impressive looking back than people claim it is as well, but Zelda and Nintendo in general will take a step back occasionally and assess how to revamp it, every time anyone has touched Final Fantasy it somehow just comes out even worse and less impressive looking than it did before. Honestly even technical things are relatively less impressive now than they were in the 90s when the games were pushing these FMVs and huge orchestral scores, 15/16 look good but compared to their competition they just look good, during that heyday an FF game was on a whole other level of presentation.
I think XVI has stand out presentation, even compared to the competition or previous FF games. I don't like all the pausing, but the whole game knocks it out of the park in visuals, presenting information, the music is some of the best this year and I doubt it'll be topped unless armored core 6 kills it

Final Fantasy was big deal for some time for two reasons: cutting edge graphics and storytelling above what the vast majority of games could offer at that point.
It should be obvious why it can't stand out on either of those aspects anymore. Megabudget western AAA games will inevitably look better, and JRPG writing has been surpassed by all the games that aim to be interactive blockbuster movies (or HBO series).

The characters have "jobs" which were called in a different ways and you can change them in combat having combo like synergist debuffs and togheter with an hard hitter can cc groups or focus on a single big boss, your healer can switch and become a mage etc... this is how the combat works.
General theme of the games is time frickery (2 and 3 more than anything) the general setting is tech future, no fantasy medieval.
Summons are transformers (fo real) like a guy has shiva but she turns into a motorcycle.
The games levels are tunnel based, there is no open world except the "select a level" and you go.
There are no shops, no cities, only corridors full of enemies and sometimes something to gatther (this don't apply to 3)
1 - you control 6 character but more than half the game you fight just in two.
2 - you control 2 characters but you can catch a monster and use it with your party. Monsters has jobs.
3 - you control just one character but it's like playing majora's mask (without rewind) you have a limited time to do stuff in a big city and grounds. Time is always running, you can't stop it and events and quest happens continuously till time's up and you reap what you saw.
You can rewind, also you left out that the events scale with time so the ones you do later get harder no matter the order

Fun combat system and world in a game with really fricking bad quests is how I would describe ff 13-3
