oh i don't know, what do you think went wrong?
Under normal conditions(no WFH, no mass acquisitions, no huge industry shifts - basically the 360 gen) i would say failing to establish their own naughty dog-tier studio delivering huge hits alone is bad. But this cascade of failures over this whole console gen should be enough for any board to be looking for a successor, if not strongly considering a full restructuring of the whole brand. Which, i think, has been going on behind the scenes for the last year, year and a half.

what you fail to mention is that Sony doesn't have any hit studios either. Every single one of their "hit" single player games was just barely making their initial budget back according to the insomniac own leaks. Sony are great at pretending they have lots of big hitting franchizes because the entire games media is backing them up with that narrative, but reality is very different.

Making budget back is good enough for exclusives. If people are buying PS5s for spiderman or god of war thats the real benefit because they'll hundreds more of all the other games. This is why pretty much every sony game gets a PS5 bundle.

yeah but the way you guys are overhyping this, it's almost certainly going to bite you in the ass. Because now nothing short of Phil Spencer going on stage with an Xbox Series X in his hands, throwing it in the garbage and then shouting "long live Playstation!" will look like you were right. Chances are, Phil is going to announce a couple of Xbox titles coming to Playstation, maybe they even got the long awaited Gamepass Playstation deal that Phil always wanted and that's likely going to be it.

Of course people are. Because the combined industry, right now, is fricking boring. It's like the current Wars in the Ukraine or the Gaza conflict. Brewing for years(or decades), on the news every once in a while but there is no real BANG! moment. No big event that changes everything followed by massive silence and reconstruction. Microsoft(xbox) has been in deep shit the whole gen and making promises at every single trade show and we've seen 0 results. That shit has to stop, there has to be a big shake-up coming. Whether that is a bunch of amazing games(not just good or great - amazing!) coming out in the span of 2-3 months or a huge restructuring.

So is this meant to be shitposting by repeatedly alluding to the fact that you worship TLOU2 and want more games of that nature?
Naughty Dog is synonymous with >people that like it really LOVE it >the media loves it >everybody talks about it for months >at times hugely controversial >sells a shitload of copies >draws in any audience with a single trailer
The quality(gameplay, fun, combat) is almost completely irrelevant. It's a company that puts out massive event games. Microsoft needs something like that.

TLOU 2 didn't sell very well, that's why they had to cancel the multiplayer. The media loves it though, you're right about that. They will paint any Sony exclusive as a big deal even when it's a massive flop like Returnal, TLOU2 or FF 16. I'm not even sure why you're arguing about this, Sony themselves have confirmed during the FTC hearings that they make 80% of their revenue with COD and Fifa. Their single player exclusives are completely irrelevant for their revenue.

wouldn't they be happy about him destroying Xbox then? In the past 2 weeks I've learnt that apparently nobody cares more about the well-being of Xbox than Sony fans do. Kinda weird
i kind of feel bad for xbox. they're pulling out JUST when ESG money dried up and companies are starting to realize it's not financially reliable. If this happened earlier... pfft AHAHAH who am i kidding.
If Phil had been hired earlier, he would probably have Xbox rivaling Playstation since he was able to sell MS execs into actually using billions to purchase ABK. At this point it's too late, MS doesn't see high enough profits out of gaming and want to go full in on AI since that's what their investors are investing money into them for. AI killed Xbox.
funny how Sony managed to dig the Playstation brand out of the deep hole they dug themselves in with the PS3 launch in only 3 years meanwhile Microsoft cant save the Xbox brand in 10 years
I mean, he's not wrong, MS objectively have a better product this gen than Sony does. It's not Phil's fault that consumers are stupid and brand loyalty is more important to them than quality. The Series X should be outselling the PS5 due to backwards compatibility and FPS boost alone, but clearly we don't live in a world where quality is being rewarded.
It's not. Almost every popular and relevant 360 game is backwards compatible. Obviously when you search for the most obscure shit, you will always find games that don't work.
633 Xbox 360 games are backwards compatible on Series X, that includes virtually every AAA release for the 360. Meanwhile 0 PS3 games are backwards compatible on PS5.
For some reason you keep missing this part: 633 Xbox 360 games are backwards compatible on Series X S. 0 PS3 games are backwards compatible on PS5.

>It's not Phil's fault that consumers are stupid and brand loyalty is more important to them than quality
Let's say you're Timmy Timothy; you play the most average, middle of the road games. CoD, Madden, Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games, Insomniac, GTA, Skyrim. You don't care what system it's on, as long as it looks amazing and everybody is talking about it. What reason do you have to buy an Xbox or a Playstation? Which console has games that are more popular?
I mean, there are far more normies who play Forza Horizon than normies who play The Last of Us or Spider-man. The rest of the games are multi platform, so the console doesn't matter.
>The rest of the games are multi platform, so the console doesn't matter.
Precisely. So which console is he going to buy? Which eco system is he going to join? If he really cares about money he's gonna go with Xbox because of gamepass. But if not it's Playstation all the way.
I dunno, if Timmy doesn't have a gaming PC, he probably wants to play Palworld, the biggest game of the year by far. Palworld unfortunately isn't on Playstation.
Xbox has the best hardware hands down. Too bad these fricking morons made dogshit games and put the Xbox brand in the hands of Todd Howard's fast travel : the game
Xbox never had a hope to begin with. The 360 was only able to succeed because Nintendo temporarily exited the core gaming market, but when they launched the switch that changed. Unlike the Wii or Wii U the switch absolutely has a large overlap with Sony/Microsoft. There isn't a large enough audience to sustain 3 consoles, never has been.
Not a single big AAA release from the past year is on the Switch or it runs at such a ridiculously bad quality like the new Mortal Kombat game that it's an absolute meme. the Switch is a Nintendo machine, nobody plays current gen multiplat games on a console that can't even handle PS4 and Xbone games.
TOTK is a Nintendo first party game. RDR 1 is a game from the PS3 / 360 era and HL is one of those novelty games that somehow made it on the Switch but nobody would ever play it on that console due to how terrible it runs. You simply cannot compare the Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy to the PS5 / Series X or even Series S version and seriously think those consoles are in competition with each other.
What you consider terrible and what someone else considers terrible is not necessarily the same thing. The switch has definitely reeled in a lot of people who accept the lower quality, but still existing, third party support in exchange for access to games like Zelda and Smash. I can talk from anecdote, that my sister considered getting a PS5 for Hogwarts Legacy but decided to just get it on switch, and therefore not have to buy another console for one game. The switch doesn't have all third party support, but it has a lot more than people admit.
PC gaming was at low point then too. It was WoW carrying the entire platform with some Valve games mixed in. Then Microsoft tried to push GFWL, failed because it sucked, and let Valve run PC
Supporting Valve and releasing on PC day 1 was such a major blunder, man. Xbox was finished right then and there with no chance of ever coming back.
Bethesda was actually a fairly cheap aquisition all things considered. the package deal definitely looked attractive a couple years back when Arcane were still decent and ID just released Doom Eternal.
>Bethesda was actually a fairly cheap aquisition all things considered. the package deal definitely looked attractive a couple years back when Arcane were still decent and ID just released Doom Eternal.
Bethesda was only cheap because the only game series they have people still care about is elder scrolls, which they only put out like once every 12 years now, so not exactly a money printer.
Because Microsoft believes in dreamers. So anyone with a convincing pitch for -MASSIVE DREAM GAME- gets green light. Sony seems to care more about smaller experiences, especially of the interpersonal kind. Big emotional moments that can be captured in trailers and presented to an easily wooed audience. Think of the upside down kiss in the rain from Spiderman. Real tear jerkers.
