Deus ex Series Discussion

I disliked HR/MD for awhile because of how badly I wanted them to surpass the original but I have come to have a lot more appreciation for them as time passes especially MD. There still really aren't many games like them out there. Unfortunately I don't think we will see a continuation of Adam's story (The VA says he hasn't been asked to return) and it has pretty much all but been confirmed that a new Dx is in development.

What would you like to see going forward with the series?

I'm pretty sure embracer canceled it after they fricked up the saudi deal.

I want a real Cairo hub. The one in invisible war sucked ass.

      >>More boss fights
why would you want more of the worst aspects of the series?=

I feel like Jensen was a bit too generic of a character, would love more of the same but with a new protagonist.

I’m afraid of what they would do with a new character.

If anything Jensen was not generic enough. Picking the "evil" options didn't feel like something he'd to. JC was better in that regard because it felt almost natural playing him like a total jackass, while the good options were still in character.

I can understand that he should be able to swing both ways morally, I guess especially in MD I found him to be dull though. Either due to his personality or maybe a lack thereof.
Didn't mind him as much in HR because of the whole intro bit really giving him some agency.

Also one thing this series does well is having those mid sized levels which you can explore, want that to continue also

You mean hubs? Yeah those usually are the best type of environments. It’s a perfect blend of open world and linear. You end up with denser designs with a lot more detail packed in.

        Anonymous

Yeah the hubs like the cities, had a lot of fun in HR exploring the police station and alley ways and sneaking into apartment buildings.

Yeah top tier stuff, same with Hells kitchen and Hong Kong in Dx. I think Prague in Mankind Divided was the best one in the series but that’s probably because they focused on a single hub for that game.

        Anonymous

It's what Cyberpunk 2077 should have been to avoid disaster. Mankind Divided's Prague is A++
I say this despite really craving a sci fi city open world game. I am fairly sure CP2077 and maybe Jak 2 are the only games that have that, despite how crazy common open world sandboxes are for every other genre.

I noticed that too a while back. I originally thought it was odd that people complained about my want for a scifi/cyberpunk sandbox game and yet tolerated Pseudomedieval fantasy sandbox/urban crime sandbox/desolate wasteland sandbox/ #46,853 until I stepped back and realized people were just tired of sandbox games in general and it just happened that we never got a good "futuristic city" one (I still say we haven't).
It doesn't help that Deus Ex hubs are just so fun and detailed to explore with stories at every corner whereas sandboxes are becoming 100 different flavor of Ubisoft. I'd love a detective-heavy version of MD's Prague again but in Tokyo or Chicago (kind of like Perfect Dark)

i would literally kill for a detective game in the deus ex universe

The problem with sandbox games is they're too zoomed out. Deus Ex is nice because you actually feel like you're on the ground. You can't get that level of detail from most sandbox games. What really ties it together is that it's an immersive simulation. I don't think Deus Ex would work if every location was accessible all at once. The nature of the game mechanics force it to be the way it is.

Being a Cyberpunk fan is suffering when it comes to vidya, especially if you’re looking for an open worldish RPG akin to Dude Sex
I’ve already played Dude Sex games to death
I can’t really complain though since I enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 and its expansion, it’s scratching my Cyberpunk itch nicely

I always thought that the scrapped idea for a deus ex sequel was really cool. Something about playing as a survivalist out in the woods with a group of people trying to evade JC’s all seeing hive mind system.

I don't like when high-tech settings focus on low-tech cultures. It's fine to have them as part of the setting, but if I'm playing Deus Ex I don't want to be in a jungle, I want to be in futuristic cities.

End of Jensen story honestly. If not then a new protagonist and a new setting.

The tough part would be figuring out what time period to use. I think the best one would be just having us play as Paul leading up to Dx1 and the events during the game as well like meeting lebedev.

Would like a control scheme overhaul, less hiding from cover and more movement and dodging.

The cover mechanics wouldn't be so necessary if they added more stealth mechanics than just line of sight and binary sound. When those are the full extent of stealth, the only proper way to sneak around is to use the cover mechanics to move between solid covers quickly and in silence.

        Anonymous

Think the stealth mechanics would benefit from it too. More free and loose movement like peeking, running and sliding. Have some cool tech and augs that play into that. He's basically a cyborg ninja if you play non lethal.

          Anonymous

I think cover mechanics are obsolete design anyway. Ironically, Ubisoft open world AAA slop has demonstrated that. There is no cover key in Ghost Recon Wildlands. The player simply uses the standard movement mechanics of the game, and the character they're controlling naturally assumes cover stances near applicable objects to minimize their visible profile. It works completely seamlessly.

Not being forcefully glued to a wall is already miles better, but I think it's a crutch games use to give you a better idea of your surroundings and safety from gunfire. However in Deus Ex you're not just a foot soldier, you can become almost bulletproof and literally see through walls if you choose to. I think it'd be more fun to have a bunch of things that make taking cover boring in comparison.

            Anonymous

the way the nu-ghost recons do it only really works when the game is all in 3rd person though, which could work i guess but i think 1st person has a certain immersion for the times when you're just walking around the hub not in combat

              Anonymous

I suppose. However, there could also be body awareness for first person that makes the character optimize their body position near objects, following the player's first person camera without interfering with their movement. For example, when you're behind a wall with a gun and peek around the corner, the character automatically only reveals that part of their body past the corner. When you sneak very close to a wall, the character automatically flattens to the wall to minimize their profile. So it can all work in first person.

I've been thinking of replaying HR and then going onto Mankind Divided recently, I never played Mankind Divided and haven't played HR since it released. I just remember people complaining about Mankind Divided being half a game when it released, but in the times I've seen people talk about it since then they seem more favorable about it.

That's because Cyberpunk treats the dystopian element differently, its world is a lot more static and you just exist in it. Deus Ex games are about geo political issues and conspiracies, they happen in real time as you play and you can see the effects around you such as evolving hostilities etc.
