They still have the Minecraft crafting system and knapping that they've promised to remove and replace with a better system years ago.
The only thing I can think of that needs work is the coherency of the stacking system. While minecraft has the same issue, VS has a lot of items that stack at different intervals (16, 128, 32). They did it justice by at least making the base the multipliers even but things like smelting and smithing are off (20 bits=100 units=1 ingot). Being able to just craft some items too would be nice (frick chutes).
i dont know about that, the first time i ran a server we all got bored from the lack of content pretty fast so the second time i ran a modded server which added a lot of content and it was a much better experience.

also, don't fall into the trap of becoming overly reliant on sculpting if you play vintage story, you need to develop your base skills at first and get an idea of shapes and contours so stick to normal blocks before you start chiseling for finer details

The reason ender dragon and an ending was added with great haste, was so that he could legally keep the money by saying the game is completed.

I always hated minecraft combat, so not interested. If a game had better combat and better building (allow for blocks, but also larger prefabs, and maybe an overhead builder like if you were making a house in the sims) then it'd be perfect

We took a school trip to a farmstead built in the classic style that many farmers used when the land was constantly being raided by turks, the two main farm buildings were opposite each other and were connected by tall walls, essentially forming a mini fortification with two buildings and two walls enclosing the yard in the middle. You could go for something like that.
Usually i take whatever stone type is in the area and dig down two blocks into the dirt(because i like thinking that its a proper wall that cant just be dug under). either i settle in a flat area or i make the area flat. the wall is usually about eight blocks tall and is two blocks thick. its is usually atleast 40x25

Most castles were small, only the big ones survived till today. Making some massive fortress would take forever, and feel odd for house a single person. It's also only the keep, I want to add a wall around it and some other buildings attached like a dedicated smithy.

A lot of castles like that were common on frontiers. It wasn't intended to be a serious defensive structure, just get all the peasants inside, chuck rocks at the attackers, and wait for backup to arrive. Basically a fortified manor house really. Would do frick all against an invasion but if you've got organised bandits or petty warbands operating in the area then it's more than sufficient.

how much food is enough for one person? I've got 126 tilled plots and about 8 chickens and I am absolutely drowning in food even with a quarter of my farmland dedicated to flax and half of it left fallow. I can't even eat it fast enough when I make meals, it rots by the time I get to it, even when I put it in a crock pot in a cellar. I feel like I could get away with a small garden of like a dozen tiles and like two chickens for eggs.

I think there is too much stuff in the game that just amounts to "get lucky", like trader spawns, salt, and gears. There's stuff that's time consuming but most of the time you have a clear path to your objective, something like salt not being detectable by a prospecting pick just feels artificial because food preservation is powerful. It's also the only reason something like smoking isn't in the game which is such a stupid simple addition to a survival game I can only see its omission being a way to artificially make the game more difficult.
